I mean it sounds smart to say these were always problems and it hasn't aged poorly but aging is pretty much "when the novelty wears off"

Aging doesn't mean there weren't problems to begin with. It never means that. Games aren't people they don't develop problems as they become older.

It means that they weren't as glaring at the time because people were excited about some other thing and aren't as much, or the things wrong with it become more obvious with an increasing amount of superior examples out there etc etc.
