The only big grinds are the equipment grind (to gear up characters) and the shard grind (to ascend certain characters). The equipment grind can get a bit out of control if you try raising too many characters at once, but if you play smart, limit the number of characters you try to raise, and take advantage of double/triple normal mode drops events when they happen, it's not that bad. The shard grind is a long-term goal that just becomes part of your dailies, and there are also double hard mode drops to occasionally give you a boost.

If you decide to start playing, re-roll for Makoto. Trust me, she's one of the best non-limited units in the entire game, but she's really annoying to try and get later if you don't re-roll for her at the start. After you get a decent core team to start, save your gems for the next Princess Fest banner (AKA double 3* rates and certain limited units coming back) which is expected to be sometime in December at the game's current pace.
