Plasmabeam - What a mixed bag this one was. The first act was a paint-by-numbers slasher setup with some family melodrama replacing the usual teen partying. Then the movie comes aliveALIVE, BABY!as people get slaughtered by crossbow bolts, trip wires, and attackers. No joke The second quarter of Youre Next is as thrilling as any movie on this list.

But then the midpoint reveal happens (which admittedly was a decent twist) and the movie shifts into survival mode. The Aussie girl basically becomes John Rambo from here on, which mightve been cool if Id been able to get invested in her before then. I mean, I like that shes skilled and resourceful, but as a character she wasnt particularly charismatic or intriguing.

The ending was interesting. Aussie girl executes her betrayer boyfriend and gets shot by the police immediately after. I like that there were consequences and that she faced punishment (although she survives at the end).

Also, a nitpick: The Youre Next messages in blood felt extremely tacked on. There was no meaning behind them (unless I missed something), and they added nothing to the movie other than its title.

Fortybelowsummer - More rich people behaving badly. Imagine having dinner with your (somewhat dysfunctional) family and next thing you know youre watching them die in all manner of gruesome ways. Turns out two of the brothers are in on it, hiring the killers to cash in on a fat inheritance. Seems like a solid plan. Too bad one of the best Final Girls Ive ever seen grew up in a survivalist camp and has no issue with brutalizing heads! Fun and gory if a bit clich at times, it had several interesting twists and Im glad I finally watched it. Also cool seeing horror legend Barbara Crampton make an appearance.

Thesmark - Home invasion movie with a wildly unlikeable WASP-Y family; unfortunately for the invaders and their plans, theres a very competent woman from outside the family who is actually capable of doing something in a crisis. I wouldnt call it great, it succeeds at doing what its trying to do: a solid genre film with some twists and bloody deaths. The score and the dark humor add a lot and the masks were great for advertising & are a memorable element.

BetrayedTangy - This is where ranking these starts getting really difficult. Youre Next is a pretty damn good time, the kills are absolutely brutal (especially the blender one), Erins one of the most badass characters in all of film and I also love how it satirizes the genre, by making the villains reasonably incompetent. It kind of reminds me of how clumsy Ghostface is in Scream. Sure, were dealing with ruthless killers, but they too are also human and just as susceptible to injury and death. Speaking of the villains I also kind of love how well Felix and Crispin are portrayed. Felix acts like a complete bitch for the entirety of the movie and Crispin just hides from the whole thing and then tries to manipulate Erin. Its a really good reflection of the way they were raised and it makes their deaths all the more satisfying. The only thing keeping it this low is legit just how much more I like the other movies on this list, oh yeah and I really dont like the ending, I like to think Erin gets out of it, but honestly that seems pretty unlikely and is a little too nihilistic for me.

Jcgamer107 - Hey look - its Ti West, who made this list as an actor, and as writer/director of a short but not of his own feature film (highly recommend The Innkeepers). I wonder how long hell be in the - ohoh no.

A decent home invasion slasher-mystery but nothing Id especially want to rewatch.
PrinceKaro - A rich middle aged couple invites their entire extended family to their country manor in so everyone can play a live action version of Among Us.

It starts out agonizingly slow with some overly suspenseful renditions of daily life where it is like oh my god she is opening the refrigerator, duuuuuuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnn

Thankfully, the happy mask crossbow gang soon shows up and starts taking potshots at the family, which only makes them start screaming slightly louder than they were before.

Unfortunately, there is one major plot hole in that the perpetrators continue their assault AFTER they had already killed all the people they needed to kill. Like the whole plan was to leave a witness alive and now why you are trying to kill her for some reason when you can just leave and everyone can be rich.

It is more intelligent than your average slasher movie, but that is not really great praise. Despite the attempt to put a fresh coat of paint on a tired scenario, it remains mired in the usual slasher tropes of everyone going 'AAAAAAA' while silly bad guys try to kill them, with of course loads of gratuitous violence for the audience to masturbate to.

Next, please.

Rockus - Youre Next and Ready or Not, like Bird Box and A Quiet Place, are another pair of films that make it difficult to avoid comparing them for this ranking. Though seeing them together did help me parse out why one worked more for me than the other. First its the difference between the two leads. In Ready or Not its a normal woman in over her head as she struggles through the evening to claw her way out of it and this its more of a surprise power fantasy where Vinsons Erin turns out to be some kind of wilderness Rambo style survivalist which didnt work much for me because the film doesnt really seem to care about any character involved. And while theres some dark humor and commentary on the wealthy and privileged elites I found Youre Next more smug about it, particularly in that dinner conversation, which is less funny and more insufferable about its caricatures.
