For a certain type of person, there will always be the vain hope in the back of your mind that the girl who's pretending to like you will eventually fall for you for real if you just give her enough money. Or presents. Or whatever. Sure, she's just stringing along those other guys, but you're the one she really likes.

Of course, there's another sort of person who is just acting on the assumption that if you keep giving these people money, they will keep producing new content, but if they don't make enough money they'll stop.

As ages kind of implied with his parasocial relationship comment, it's not too different from the mentality of people who tip on Twitch or donate via Patreon to creators they like. In some cases it's just supporting content to increase the odds there'll be more content in the future, while for some people it's part of the sad one-sided non-relationship they feel like they have with a content creator. They're my friend, so of course I'll help tip them! And if I tip them enough, they'll say my name on stream, and maybe they'll start liking me...
