So it absolutely could be that.

It might also be that he wants to push back against the idea that these people are being removed because the administration (read: Trump) thinks they're wrong because it would imply that he was wrong in hiring them or something so he doubles down.

i dunno

I usually view what happens through the lens of either "whatever explanation seems stupidest is probably right" or "what would someone who believes in a parody of 'alpha' think is the move to make"
