two thoughts

1. it's possible that being severed gives the hand a limited lifetime

2. the white walkers are linked to winter, so it's possible that as winter pushes south, it's more likely that a wight can still be animated in the south

but yeah, i've had this complaint since 4x10 when we first saw the rotted undead

4x10 was probably the turning point for this show. so many bad scenes.
