Very true, something that gets lost in history. The main reason the north didn't have slavery while the south did wasn't some moral thing or humans rights issue, it was that the north simply was industrialized and it was cheaper to replace slaves with machines. The south just wasn't there yet.

Had the civil war never happened, it is very possible that slavery would have gone away within 20 years or less. Even though slavery was "free labor" it was very expensive to maintain.
