Compared to other "mass killings, lots of people die" series, Death Note is actually fairly tame. Normally those involve people dying in a horrifying or violent ways. Aside from a few deaths, Death Note is pretty low on the violence, since getting a heart attack isn't something I'd consider gruesome.
Though I suppose that the anime did make things more dramatic.

And Bakuman is without a doubt Shounen. I mean it was originally about teenage boys setting their sights for a common goal.
Now I haven't read any sports manga before, but I wouldn't think that it's so much of a stretch to think of Bakuman like a sports manga only with manga making as the "sport".
