I’m not even being unfair to this episode.
Well you did kind of miss the part where Starly commanded a Noctowl or Hoothoot to hypnotize Meowth into setting the bird pokes free. That was pretty different. Usually Ash's normal/flying types are mindless and devoid of personality so seeing Starly not only devise a plan but also take a leadership role without being Ash's Pikachu is kind of a big deal.
I thought about mentioning that, but if I did that, I would have to mention how Hoothoot was capable of mind controlling Meowth the entire time and needed Starly, who presumably isn't even familiar with what Hoothoot are capable of, to tell it what to do. I thought this was better.
