The studio 'franchise' system definitely started with "Jaws" and "Star Wars", but the way you're going about with this argument War has a point with "Gone With The Wind".

I agree with the gist of your statement but you're making an already-tough sell all the tougher with how you're presenting the supposed evidence. It would be nice to see this era of relentless superhero movies come to a close within the next ten or so years and "The Avengers" certainly isn't contributing to such a future, but frankly if it's as good for the fans as the fans are saying, it should be praised and seen despite what you've said.

That and Joss Whedon deserves most of the money he can get, so yeah.

I wouldn't say so, studios have been thinking along those lines ever since they could hand out contracts. Basically the difference being that instead of making a numbered sequel its usually based on vehicles for the actor. Though that didn't stop them making a million broadway melodies!

What Jaws did was just have every studio go, oh lets frontload everything in the summer and make it a national release instead of a staggered release, the only thing Jaws can be blamed of is us having too many sweet big budget movies to look forward to being released at roughly the same time.

And then in winter we can all enjoy those sweet movies the studios want to push for the Oscars!
