The fun factor is absolutely there. Pretty much the only way to think this is to both have bad taste and not have played it when it came out.
Played it in 98, can't say I had fun with it. Played it 04, when I was a bit older, still didn't have all that fun with it, finally finished it in 06 before I played Half-Life 2, yep still pretty average.
It aging, and its fun factor have nothing to do with it, I just didn't have all that great of time with it. I don't think any FPS is all that good, if I had to pick my favorite it's probably Bioshock, which I gave an 8 here.
