if it's not it should be. I think if it's egregious enough, like a foot of snow on your roof or your windows, you'll get pulled over for endangering other drivers or operating a vehicle in an unsafe manner

there are legit complaints about Python, like the GIL problem or the structural use of whitespace as a scope delimiter, but other than that it's a nifty language. Not my first choice for a lot of stuff, but goddamn it's nice to write something quickly and have it Just Work

it's also way nicer than shell scripts or Perl for utility scripts on a *nix system

I don't have any illusions that Bevin did this out of some sudden emergence of principles. But, I do believe that our justice system is overly punitive in general, and the 4-5 lurid stories people have highlighted out of 400 pardons doesn't change that fact. It's disappointing to see that this has sparked some outrage and calls for harsher sentencing from people who otherwise believe in ending mass incarceration.

He wants to cap all setences at 20 years. I fucking hate liberals sometimes. They got bright ideas, that doesnt work in the real world. This dude is the definition od a joke and soyboy. I agree that NON violent offenders shouldnt serve much time, bit one dude cut off his partners head, mother fucker should serve life

you do realize that countries that have caps on prison time usually have soft caps, right? Anders Breivik got the max of 21 years under Norwegian law, but he is subject to psychological tests before being released. If he's still found to be a danger to society, his sentence can be increased and they can keep him in prison (effectively indefinitely).

This is exactly how it should be. Life in prison should be the exception used as needed, not the default.

On Saturday, 5 November 1983 at 4:00 a.m., while drilling in the Frigg gas field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, four divers were in a diving chamber system on the rig's deck that was connected by a trunk (a short passage) to a diving bell. The divers were Edwin Arthur Coward (British, 35 years old), Roy P. Lucas (British, 38), Bjrn Giver Bergersen (Norwegian, 29) and Truls Hellevik (Norwegian, 34). They were assisted by two dive tenders, William Brown Crammond and Martin Andrew Saunders.[6]

Hellevik was about to close the door between the chamber system and the trunk when the chamber explosively decompressed from a pressure of nine atmospheres to one atmosphere. One of the tenders, 32-year-old William Crammond of Great Britain, and all four of the divers were killed instantly; the other tender, Saunders, was severely injured.[10]

...

Medical investigations were carried out on the remains of the four divers and of one of the tenders. The most notable finding was the presence of large amounts of fat in large arteries and veins and in the cardiac chambers, as well as intravascular fat in organs, especially the liver.[6]:97, 101 This fat was unlikely to be embolic, but must have precipitated from the blood in situ.[6]:101 The autopsy suggested that rapid bubble formation in the blood denatured the lipoprotein complexes, rendering the lipids insoluble.[6]:101 The blood of the three divers left intact inside the chambers likely boiled instantly, stopping their circulation.[6]:101 The fourth diver was dismembered and mutilated by the blast forcing him out through the partially blocked doorway and would have died instantly.[6]:95, 100101

Coward, Lucas, and Bergersen were exposed to the effects of explosive decompression and died in the positions indicated by the diagram. Investigation by forensic pathologists determined that Hellevik, being exposed to the highest pressure gradient and in the process of moving to secure the inner door, was forced through the 60-centimetre (24 in) diameter opening created by the jammed interior trunk door by escaping air and violently dismembered, including bisection of his thoracoabdominal cavity, which resulted in expulsion of all of the internal organs of his chest and abdomen, except the trachea and a section of small intestine, and of the thoracic spine. These were projected some distance, one section being found 10 metres (30 ft) vertically above the exterior pressure door.[6]:95

tl;dr: three of the guys' blood boiled, and the other one was sucked through a two foot diameter opening, ripping apart his abdomen, then throwing all his internal organs and part of his spine all over the decompression chamber. (The other three would have stayed alive for a while while they boiled and would have seen all this.)

decapitation isnt painless
the head lives for about a minute after its removed so you now have a huge pain in your neck where your body was was
and plus you fall down onto the group or into a bucket without any hands to protect your face with which would hurt

From Wikipedia:

Decapitation is quickly fatal to humans and most animals. Unconsciousness occurs within 10 seconds without circulating oxygenated blood (brain ischemia). Cell death and irreversible brain damage occurs after 36 minutes with no oxygen, due to excitotoxicity. Some anecdotes suggest more extended persistence of human consciousness after decapitation,[16] but most doctors consider this unlikely and consider such accounts to be misapprehensions of reflexive twitching rather than deliberate movement, since deprivation of oxygen must cause nearly immediate coma and death ("[Consciousness is] probably lost within 23 seconds, due to a rapid fall of intracranial perfusion of blood.").[17] A laboratory study testing for humane methods of euthanasia in awake animals used EEG monitoring to measure the time duration following decapitation for rats to become fully unconscious, unable to perceive distress and pain. It was estimated that this point was reached within 3 4 seconds, correlating closely with results found in other studies on rodents (2.7 seconds, and 3 6 seconds).[18][19][20] The same study also suggested that the massive wave which can be recorded by EEG monitoring approximately one minute after decapitation ultimately reflects brain death. Other studies indicate that electrical activity in the brain has been demonstrated to persist for 13 to 14 seconds following decapitation (although it is disputed as to whether such activity implies that pain is perceived),[21] and a 2010 study reported that decapitation of rats generated responses in EEG indices over a period of 10 seconds that have been linked to nociception across a number of dierent species of animals, including rats.[22]
