Perl is one of those tried and true languages for shell scripting, server-side web app and text processing that Just Works. I can understand that, don't fix what ain't broke, even if it's internal or CGI stuff

... unless it's for new projects, in which case everyone calling those shots should be fired

Python 2 is a bit different since it's literally being discontinued and 3 is superior in every way

Windows 7 was the last user-focused MS OS. Windows 10 is better, but has clear and obvious downsides. Why would anyone celebrate the death of Win7 when the best replacement is Linux?

Yeah, Windows 10 is a step up from 8/8.1, but after all this time I still hate the UI with a passion and wish they would at least give us classic Windows themes as alternatives.

My problems with Windows 10 aren't the design of the UI. I know you can change how it looks. My problems are Cortana, the Microsoft store, OneDrive, Microsoft accounts, spying on your programs, spying on your activity, ads in your own damn OS, and so on. Microsoft 10 is modern in all the wrong ways. It feels really Apple-ian in how much they want to control the user experience. Forced updates is one thing, but deleting your programs, targeted ads, etc are things no one actually asks for.

Without Windows, PCs would not have caught on as well.

No one wants to run their system with the knowledge of a mechanic.

They just want to drive.

Not necessarily true. PC compatibles were hugely popular before Windows ever hit the scene, running various and somewhat intercompatible versions of DOS provided by MS, IBM, Digital (Novell), etc. MS definitely took an early lead, but they weren't the only game in town. There were also a few GUI overlays that competed with the early versions of Windows well before it asserted dominance with version 3.1 and above.

That's also not including non-Windows OSes like OS/2 (still used in ATMs) or something like BSD/386 (used for a lot of early web servers). Linux wasn't really a thing back then, the biggest competitor would have been Apple and the Macintosh

Enjoy run-time errors galore because your amateur hour language thinks explicit types take too much brain power for its users. Have fun with snail-level performance because of all those syntactic conveniences that python "programmers" slap together like monkeys throwing feces, not understanding all the extra work they're making the computer do for no reason.

Run time errors? I've written 5000 lines of code before you've even closed your fist brace. I use Chad dynamic type checking and duck typing to implement design patterns that your weakling language needs interfaces for. Strongly typed languages are for the weak working pure CRUD jobs at an insurance company. Meanwhile the alpha Python users are working with big data, machine learning, and beautiful abstractions.

But tbh you sound like a college student so I'll leave it at this lol

All the useful python libraries that do the real work behind big data and machine learning aren't actually written in python. Hmm, wonder why...

Python is more likely to be used by a clueless college student because it's the language they taught him in class. Only an omega loser would think in terms of "beta" and "alpha". Makes sense a clueless python user would think this way.

Each language has it's pros and cons. Python is popular and useful because it's fast to develop in and the performance differences are not an important factor for many applications. god I'm boring myself just typing this

there are legit complaints about Python, like the GIL problem or the structural use of whitespace as a scope delimiter, but other than that it's a nifty language. Not my first choice for a lot of stuff, but goddamn it's nice to write something quickly and have it Just Work

it's also way nicer than shell scripts or Perl for utility scripts on a *nix system
