that's about how long our first game took - subsequent games have been much shorter

I think the issue is that in the first game, people are less likely to pursue points, and with nobody pushing the game toward the end, it just... keeps going

the one thing I don't get is why they did what they did with the anime ending

for some reason they straight-up skipped the three chapters leading up to where it left off, which could easily have been covered with a thirteenth episode

other than that, though, it was faithful enough to the source material that you could just start from volume 5 and not miss anything at all

I honestly can't think of anything - technically, I gave Brass a second chance, but the only reason I disliked it the first time was because we so thoroughly botched the rules that it wasn't the game at fault

I've been lucky with the whole learning curve thing - most of the people I play with who own games are also really good at teaching them in an easy to understand way

Sushi Go Party is definitively better than Sushi Go because you can play the base game version with it

the only issue I have with Party is that a few of the options make the game go a lot slower - stuff like "search through the rest of the cards for a different card to play" really kills the flow of things, especially when you get multiple in one turn - but you can just choose to not use them

7 Wonders is not at all bad when it comes to symbols - you just have to explain the cards by color, then fill in the details for yellow cards/wonder stages

I was told that you can more or less play it stand-alone though. Chaos;Head (the game in question) has no official translation and probably won't, I think it's been in some kind of semi-development hell. I never really felt my enjoyment was impacted by not knowing things, at least. It seemed like any details you may have needed to know are brought up for you.

It's kinda hard to say which is better at the moment since I only just got my Kickstarter copy of Hardback, but the easiest way to put it is that Paperback is more Dominion-inspired, while Hardback is more along the lines of Star Realms. They both have the basic mechanic of "draw 5 cards and spell a word with the letters you get."

Paperback has stacks of letters separated by cost, and each card has an ability that generally has some effect on either your available money or your hand size the next turn. The game is won by having the most points at the end, which are generally acquired by purchasing wild cards that work similarly to estates/duchies/provinces in Dominion.

Hardback, on the other hand, has one giant deck of cards sorted into four literary genres. A card will generally give you points or money whenever you play them, and you can gain extra benefits if you play multiple letters from one genre. Instead of designated wild cards, a card can be used as a wild at the cost of not getting any of its benefits. There's also a bit of press your luck added - the only way to draw extra cards is to spend ink to draw a card, but you have to use that in your word. The winner is the first one to 60 points, so you can't just go all in on big money words.

tl;dr - both are great; paperback is much more casual-friendly and can let you spell bigger words; hardback has a lot more depth to it but has the potential to drag on much longer
