Also I have to add that since open world "JRPGs" have existed since at least the NES/Famicom, the idea that it defies all logic for Japanese people is one of the dumbest stereotypes I've heard yet. Just because you don't play open world JRPGs doesn't mean they don't exist.

That's a really great site by the way. I collect physical games and I use it to help me find retro games I might not have heard of that are worth checking out. I have discovered some really good games from there.

Also in general I really hate how Japan gets stuck with these stupid nationwide stereotypes based on some strawman while everyone in the West gets to be an individual. What if everyone assumed all Americans were a confederate flag waving redneck NASCAR "fan" (I realize NASCAR and many fans don't support those things, my point is it's a dumb stereotype)? I mean how stupid would that be?

because had they tried to invade england it would have been a catastrophe, and it'd lose them the war.

I don't think they ever intended to do such a thing (it was a bomb them into submission strategy), but yeah the vast, vast majority of their troops would have died before making it to the shore. The relative small size of the UK, air and naval superiority, and favorable geography basically made it impossible. Even the planned invasion of Japan by the US predicted a million dead and that was with absolute naval and air superiority against a bombed out husk of a nation.

I think most people who study the situation agree that regardless of the other mistakes Hitler made (invading the USSR, declaring war on the US) it wasn't possible for them to successfully invade the UK because they lost air superiority rather early on before those other aspects became a factor, and as revolutionary as the V2 was it didn't do much damage, especially compared to the cost. His frustration with the situation versus the UK contributed to his poorly planned invasion of the USSR.

Yeah I always find the arguments on "it needs difficulty modes" disingenuous because it isn't actually that hard. We're not talking like NES games with pixel perfect jumps and twitch reflexes, it's a game that you use patience and learning to overcome. There is a video of a bedridden elderly Japanese man playing Dark Souls. He can't get out of bed, his hands more slowly and yet he can beat the game because he can be patient and learn how to overcome different enemies/bosses.

kirbymuncher posted...
I can't speak for spanish (though I imagine it's at least similar) but in french you also have feminine/masculine nouns. And they clearly have something to do with gender, because if you use an adjective to describe a noun, the adjective ending often changes based on the gender of the noun. and it changes in the same way it would if you were using that adjective to describe a female/male person as well

That's where the naming came from for grammatical gender. The problem is words are arbitrarily one gender or the other, there is no consistency between languages, and the number of genders also varies (1-5, some say up to 8 in some languages). You end up with stuff like Polish having country names for countries that are feminine, masculine, or neuter and if you tried to find some kind of pattern based on social gender you would go mad. It's simply an aspect of language that got stuck with an unfortunate name. And even French has words that are clearly masculine/feminine socially, but have the opposite gender grammatically.

As I mentioned earlier grammatical gender is a concept attached onto the language by linguists. It doesn't have to do with the modern way we use gender. A word in Spanish having a masculine or feminine ending does not mean it is related to that gender in the modern social sense of the word. Again see feminino.

Gotcha. The game play is pretty boring so far too, with just auto attacking beating almost everything. But that's to be expected as it's still the beginning of the game.

I played through it on the highest difficulty that doesn't instant game over you (so the second highest I guess?) if you die and instead lets you restart on that floor. I figured reducing the tedium was fair since it wouldn't actually make the fights easier. That said the game was still really easy and I rarely died, so I imagine the lower difficulties are extremely easy.

The term gender comes from linguistics and was only used to describe people in the 60s/70s in America and spread from there. The idea that gender in terms of linguistics is somehow related is kind of sad.

Just as an example for those who don't understand. The word feminine in Spanish is feminino, a masculine word ending. Obviously the gender labels aren't related to the words meaning. These are linguistic labels, not some kind of gender code in the modern Western society sense of the word. And some gendered languages have 5 genders. It's just really unfortunate the labels are what they are, because they were added later, not inherent to the languages.

Most scientists knew masks worked. Early on Nature published a paper on the effectiveness of masks against Coronavirus from University of Hong Kong. This was before it became a big problem in most of the West. The anti-mask thing wasn't coming from scientists actually studying the virus, it was coming from Western culture. The belief in Western superiority cost a lot of lives, because the idea that the things East Asian countries are doing might actually work was too much to accept. They even claimed Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, etc. were lying about their numbers and secretly had tons of dead people. It wasn't until recently that they've finally begun accepting they actually did things effectively, but studies have been coming out this entire time on the effectiveness of masks.
