Historically, oppression of women has been commonplace in numerous civilizations (even including "advanced" cultures). If the claim that men and women are truly "equal" is valid, then statistically speaking, shouldn't there be an just as many civilizations where women oppressed men as there are of men oppressing women?

If we all evolved equally, why do men historically get the upper hand in terms of authority? Going by statistics alone, men and women are actually NOT that "equal" (not even close).

I'm trying to find old Sci-Fi movies which have aged horribly. I know Back to the Future II is a popular example (e.g. flying cars in 2015), but there are several other examples that did well at the time, but are are even MORE absurd in their inaccuracy about the "future" (a.k.a. the actual present for us now).

Some that come to mind include:

Johnny Mnemonic
Blade Runner (the original from 1982)
Judge Dredd
2001: A Space Odyssey

Can ya'll think of any others? I want to binge watch these "classics."

Spanking is fine as long as a parent isn't angry it doesn't cause permanent damage and they don't keep spanking them even when they're reaching their teens. If they understand well enough getting their video game taken away is good enough punishment then they don't need to be spanked

My mom was bad at spanking more out of anger, but my dad spanked more out of love. My dad would always sit down with me after words and give me the "You know I only whoop ya cause I love ya!" talk, and try to explain that he hated spanking me.

But, even with my mom, it still never felt like hateful abuse. She only spanked me when I had indeed earned it.

Spanking is a perfectly valid method of discipline for people who actually cannot control a 5 year old without hitting them.

Last resort, physical strength when intelligence is matched.

Are you saying all 5 year olds are dumb? Some are smarter than you already believe it or not. Born with intelligence it is not learned.

I think he's referring to the intelligence of the parents (as in, they're not intelligent enough to figure out a way of discipline that doesn't involve spanking).

I could be wrong, though.

Or that even if a 5 year old is smart there is a difference between intelligence and giving a fuck. Kids are going to do what they want to do unless the parents find some way to make the understand why they shouldn't and sometimes the kid knowing there will be consequences is what stops them.

That's true. It's also what makes the condescending comments about parent intelligence so absurd. As PO pointed out earlier, kids are absolutely incapable of abstract thought until they develop critical thinking skills, and the ability for basic empathy (they don't REALIZE the dangers of busy streets, or that hitting others in the head with sticks inflicts pain; they CAN'T).

So, there has to be some sort of negative reinforcement for dangerous / hurtful actions so that the kid associates the bad actions with a negative feeling. Granted, every kid is different, and for some kids, a mere verbal rebuke is sufficient (since they don't like seeing mommy or daddy angry-faced).

But, if you're a reckless kid like I was, who was dense as a bag of bricks when it came to following orders, talking alone wasn't going to cut it. Practicality also makes a difference, because you can't just give a kid a "time-out" when he's being disobedient in a transitory environment (e.g. parking lot, or interstate rest stop during a road trip).

Nintendo's eShop DLC won't let you buy any DLC you've already purchased for that very reason. But in Nintendo's case, it's actually annoying. For example, if you own a single piece of DLC for Smash Bros, you can't buy the big all-in-one DLC bundle. It'll say "you already own part of this DLC pack" or something like that. It could be a 99 cent DLC, but you still can't buy the bundle. You have to manually buy all of the items individually. <_<

I don't think they're "eager" to do it. For most people, it would be a last-resort (at least it should be).

I mean, it would be nice if positive reinforcement was always practical for every situation. Sadly, parents aren't always going to be able to lure their kid away from danger with lollipops and "active listening."

Your poll is asking if people think it's abuse. It's not asking about the effects of spanking or whether it's effective. Those are completely different things. If you don't want to believe actual studies just so you can hit your children that is your choice. Hit your children all you want.

Since you're hung up on studies and sources, I suppose we can just can let the sources speak.

Here's some research AGAINST spanking, citing multiple peer-reviewed studies (references at bottom).
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/moral-landscapes/201309/research-spanking-it-s-bad-all-kids

Here's some research IN FAVOR of spanking, citing multiple peer-reviewed studies (references at bottom).
https://goodparent.org/corporal-punishment/research-on-corporal-punishment/evidence-favoring-the-use-of-disciplinary-spanking/

Scientific American did a good report explaining the complexity.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-science-says-and-doesn-t-about-spanking/

[FROM THE ARTICLE]
"Many experts argue that this form of punishmenthitting a child on the bottom with an open handincreases the risk that kids will develop emotional and behavioral problems. Other scientists counter that research on the issue is fraught with problems, making it impossible to draw black-and-white conclusions. A new meta-analysis addresses several of the most contentious points in the debate and concludes that spanking does pose risks, but differences of opinion persist."

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree regarding the "effectiveness" argument. But at least it's nice to have a bit more perspective on the abuse issue.

There are any number of sources you can look up that show spanking is not effective and is a detriment to children.

But if you want to hit your kids have at it. Some people need an excuse for everything. Effective communication is too hard for some people.

I realize a gamefaqs poll doesn't represent a peer-reviewed study from an ivy-league school, but these "sources" are all in direct contradiction with the information in the very poll above (and this is Gamefaqs we're talking about; which overwhelmingly consists of NON-conservative people). If you look hard enough, you can find "sources" to back up just about anything. But, we're just talking based on everyday, general experiences of the people here. The statistics don't agree with you.

I mean sure, we'd all love to pull off Supernanny's perfect techniques, and most parent's aren't going to lead off with physically whapping a kid. Of COURSE they're going to attempt spoken rebukes first (at least a good parent will make that effort).

Also, if you got genuinely "abused" as a kid (and granted, many kids do), I certainly don't want to minimize that, or defend that by any means. Abuse is horrible. But for every source that says spanking is "bad," I can find just as many saying it's "good." Were it not for the poll being so slanted towards a non-abusive viewpoint, I would say this is a polarizing issue. But it doesn't even seem that polarized. The general consensus (at least so far) seems to be that spanking isn't abusive (and that's coming from people who actually WERE spanked). Ironically, from the people who DO consider it abusive, only a mere 30 percent of them were actually spanked themselves. They must be basing their entire argument on your "sources," because based on actual real-life experience, they have zero point of reference.

You can explain intellectually to an adult that they shouldn't run into a busy street. You can't explain that intellectually to a 2 year old (and even if you could, they'd forget everything you said in 5 minutes).

Conflating hitting adults with "spanking" children is absurd.

How does hitting a 2 year old explain they shouldn't run into a street?

It's not just "running into a street." You can deter ANY potentially hazardous behavior by spanking, because the discomfort of the spank outweighs the potential thrill of whatever the heck the kid wants to do (running with a sharpened pencil, climbing onto a wobbly table, etc.) Pain is a very effective motivator and useful for course-correction (especially when spoken word is going to be ultimately ineffective; as PO explained).

I feel genuinely sad that this needed to be explained.

Those DLC come out slowly over time. I already mentioned CK2 which is at about $500 worth of DLC now.

That's true. Another good thing about Steam in particular is that users can leave reviews for the individual DLC's in addition to the game itself, so you know which DLC's are worth getting, and which ones are steaming piles of crap.

That aspect can help protect your wallet as you try to get the good stuff and avoid bad stuff.

People that say this shit have never had kids. They get into trouble. Kids spend a large portion of their energy trying to discover new ways to hurt themselves. No one can keep their eyes glued to them 24/7

This is so true it hurts. I myself was particularly accident prone growing up. I once tried to climb my chest of drawers like a ladder to get one of my brothers toys off the top, since it was out of my reach. The entire chest of drawers then tipped forward falling on top of me. The very top tip of it happened to catch the edge of our lower bunk bed, so thankfully only the weight of the drawers came fully on me. I then laid there pinned underneath while my mom and brother had to work together to lift the chest and drawer contents off of me.

Then there was the time I tried to lift the glass from a glass coffee table with my hands and feet while laying underneath (where the long glass top sat on 4 pins). I wanted to see if I could lift the glass entirely off the chrome settings and get it back into place without dropping it. It didn't work, and the glass shattered. Thankfully the only thing sitting on the table was a big photo album, that plopped down onto my chest. Pieces of glass went everywhere.

In both cases, I somehow walked away without a scratch.

My only grief with games like the Sims is that they sometimes lock core game engine functions behind the paywalls (e.g. Seasons, which I think the only way to get certain weather options).

Other games like Railworks or DOA: Last Round are are almost like a collector "storefront." So yeah, in those games, nobody is EXPECTED to get all the DLC. You just get the stuff that sticks out to you, or tickles your fancy.

Well, the kid quantity argument is a whole discussion in and of itself. My bro-in-law just had his 4th kid. He's got 3 girls and a boy (and this fourth kid he said he wasn't "expecting," but life happens).

I actually agree that families shouldn't just keep procreating ad nauseam (especially in low-income situations, which ironically is where over-population happens them most, since they can't afford contraceptives / vasectomies). But I'm not making that up. That's just statistics.
http://www.nccp.org/publications/pub_1074.html

"Children represent 24 percent of the population, but they comprise 34 percent of all people in poverty." Impoverished families send to have higher kid populations (regardless of good parenting efforts).

If you think I'm fabricating my bro-in-law's 3 girls and boy prove a point, that's your choice. But even people who FINANCIALLY can handle large families still often end up struggling in the actual MANAGEMENT of said family. For people who struggle financially, it's even harder.

You don't have to "leave them alone." Real-life (especially, when you have 4 kids or more), doesn't allow you to watch them like a hawk every nanosecond. Try putting 4 kids into a van at once, by yourself, and you'll see how quickly a kid can get himself into a pickle, regardless of your effort.

Whatever "padded wall" universe you think parents should provide for their kids is unrealistic at best, and outright fantasy at worst.

There seems to be a bit of a "pendulum-swing" effect on this, with opinions shifting back and forth on the issue over time. I've heard people give good examples both FOR and AGAINST the overall concept of disciplinary spanking, on principle (with valid logic on both sides).

For me personally, I had the crap beaten out of me regularly growing up, but I never considered it abusive (neither now in hindsight, nor at the time). But, to be fair, I had "good" parents, who explained my wrongdoing, and frankly, I often had it coming (as much as I misbehaved / disobeyed). Not everybody has the same parenting package.

NOTE: This is just straight up data-gathering here. I'm not trying to prove one side "right" or "wrong." I'm just trying to get a sense of people's general opinions, and if possible, the rationale behind those opinions.

Vote it up, peeps!!!

No, it was actually pretty dang cool looking. If anyone on TES Nexus had come up with it, it would have done great. It's just that paid "vanity item" DLC wasn't really a thing yet. Horse armor was one of the very first (widespread) DLC's that was purely for aesthetics alone.

Heck, many games now build their entire business model around aesthetic DLC. (If you don't believe me, just look at Dead or Alive; Last Round, or Capcom games, or the Dynasty Warriors series.) At least with Horse Armor, it was actual downloadable content, and not put on disc just to be locked behind a paywall.

So, I got RDR 2, but it SEEMS that the only way to get DLC is by buying the game's "special," or "ultimate" editions. (seriously, there's three different "editions" you can buy on PSN for this game).

But, I'm not seeing any additional individual add-ons. That's kind of a crappy business model. I guess unless you fork out the wad of cash for the ultimate edition ($99), it's impossible to see all of the game's content (even if you're willing to pay for it after buying the base game).

They may add it later. For Xenoblade Chronicles 2, if you bought the special edition, you got the Torna game for free, and early. If not, you have to wait like a week to get it. And instead of paying $20 extra for the in game items (very useful) and the other game, it would be $40 (I think) for the other game.

Hopefully Rockstar will release an "Expansion Pass" similar to Xenoblade. If you own a physical copy, you're going to need a DLC-onlly purchase option of sorts. Xenoblade's approach would be fine, IMO.

Well, I may have sparked yet another "DLC" vs. "Microtransactions" debate. There's a fine line between the two, but when I was excluding microtransactions in the OP, I was more referring just the purchase of virtual currency. You purchased in-game content with the money, so IMO, that's still DLC.

The problem with virtual currency is that you can spend it on anything (especially in mobile games, where you're spending the currency for nothing more than speeding up a task, or eliminating RNG chances at crafting success, etc.) Sometimes it's hard to tell what will actually bring value. I've seen some people spend hundreds of dollars on mobile game "gatcha" mechanics that was literally gambling with no "content" to show for it whatsoever.

It's a shame what happened to Battleborn. If it weren't for being so outclassed by Overwatch, it might have had a decent chance. Of course, that wasn't the first time that a decent game got killed by a better alternative (and it won't be the last).

they weren't the same genre.

overwatch is a fps with objectives.
battleborn was a moba.

Fair enough. But it's been well documented that the launch of Overwatch directly impacted Battleborn's community.

Had they launched further apart, things may have turned out differently for Gearbox.

Everything I bought for Paragon. Easily over $500 worth of stuff that's just useless now.
Thanks Tencent.

Good LORD, man. That's an assload of DLC. I remember playing the beta for Paragon, and it felt like a sci-fi version of SMITE. It showed promise, but I was hesitant to throw money at it.

Oh that reminds me. I bought several Marvel and Pixar LBP costumes that ended up being removed later so I couldn't download them on LBP3

That's kinda like buying MP skins for a game that soon after had its MP shut down.

One of the DLC houses in Oblivion, the mage one I think, you could get some handy stuff out of it like a permanent companion but otherwise it was a bitch to actually use as you had to walk up a mountain to get there.

There's more btu I can't remember.

The wizards tower? That one was awesome

Indeed. I loved that one.

Also, who cares about location when you can fast-travel???

I've had some PSU's explode and fry components, but no outright fires.

please tell me you did something wrong.

I can't live in fear that my psu will explode and destroy my pc for no reason

Nah, it was a crappy-ass PSU from an old PC from E-Machines (a defunct PC building company that made utter crap PC's for dirt cheap).

My friend, on the other hand, custom-built a brand new PC with a gold-certified PSU (all parts bought from Newegg), and his PSU likewise fried all his components. He had to RMA the entire order. Thankfully, Newegg is pretty good when it comes to returns / replacements.

One of the DLC to Dragon Age, because I never got around to playing it. In fact, I never got around to finishing the main game.

If you're talking about "Awakening," then same here. The main story was actually pretty good, but the DLC was just watered-down, more-of-the-same content. Thankfully, I got it for free in a "complete" bundle.

It's one of the better dungeon crawlers out there. Mindless fun that's repetitive. I'd recommend avoiding any sidequests, and just sticking to the main story progression.

I was going to buy it, but I ended up getting RDR 2 instead.

I'll get it eventually though. If it's anywhere close to the Crash Bandicoot remaster in quality, I'm sure it'll be great!

knights of the 9 oblivion.

That was a pretty decent one though. It's one of the better ones by far. A little quest, some nice story bits and some ok armor/weapon. It's better than probably all the others aside from Shivering Isles.

I actually agree with this. Shivering Isles was frustratingly confusing (of course, spoilers aside, that was kinda the point). Knights of the Nine took a little while to get into, but once you got momentum, it was a decent story, with a pretty awesome ending.
