No joke... The new top-of-the-line "Turing" cards from NVIDIA (particularly the RTX 2080 ti) are failing in large numbers due to a confirmed defect, and some have even caught on fire. Mind you, this line of cards was originally announced at MSRP of $999, but you'll be lucky to find it for less than $1200 (including all manufacturers / models). People are forking out absurd amounts of cash for this junk.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2018/11/15/nvidia-confirms-rtx-2080-ti-problem-the-same-day-one-bursts-into-flames/#79d6dcb64958

Thankfully, it seems that the worst problems are from the "Founder's Edition" cards from NVIDIA itself. Third-party cards still have failure rates, but closer to normal / expected levels. Still though, I feel genuinely sad for people who saved up 1000-1200 bucks of their hard-earned money just to have it literally burned up along with their other PC components. Meanwhile, console gamers are enjoying the likes of RDR 2 and Spiderman problem-free! (Sony be like; "LOL, wut's NVIDIA???")

At this point, PC gamers are actually better off just buying last-gen hardware and ignoring the current gen entirely. I guess that's what happens when a greedy-ass company has zero competition whatsoever. Maybe AMD will save the day once the next Radeon cards are announced.

Actually, I was wrong. The third-party cards are catching on fire too. There's a topic about it on the PC boards (with the card from EVGA, one of the more highly-rated third-party sellers).

why don't they make a video card with no video processing on it so people can mine BitCoins for cheaper?

GPU's are actually shit for mining. And dedicated cards have long since existed.

Is that true? Then why are people buying up GPUs for mining? Is the whole world dumb?

However, places like China where the electricity is free is where a lot of the mining systems are.

That's true. Linustechtips did testing on power draw to show just how bad most GPU's are from power-costs alone (defeating the purpose of the mining). If you end up adding custom coolers, the power cost gets higher yet.

It saddens me that the supply of good cards is still so low (across-the-board). I actually called EVGA the other day, and according to the sales guy on the phone, one of their newly listed cards (which says "Auto-Notify right now on the store page) sold out in less than THREE MINUTES of availability.

THREE MINUTES!!!

Man, that freakin sucks. I've had some PSU's explode and fry components, but no outright fires.

I hate..., HATE the smell of "electrical burns" (just generally speaking).

I'm hoping that the non-founder edition cards with lower failure rates will go on sale for Black Friday. If I'm lucky, I might be able to grab one at or below MSRP (fingers crossed).

As it stands now, pretty much all RTX cards are at LEAST 100-300 dollars higher than NVIDIA's original MSRP.

please tell me you did something wrong.

I can't live in fear that my psu will explode and destroy my pc for no reason

edit: I mean, I know things fail on the own for various reasons, but still...

Nah, it was a crappy-ass PSU from an old PC from E-Machines (a defunct PC building company that made utter crap PC's for dirt cheap).

My friend, on the other hand, custom-built a brand new PC with a gold-certified PSU (all parts bought from Newegg), and his PSU likewise fried all his components. He had to RMA the entire order. Thankfully, Newegg is pretty good when it comes to returns / replacements.
