The biggest issue with TLJ is that it took too many risks. It took the risks a trilogy of films should have taken. Each one deserved to stand alone and breathe. Instead it was crammed with the genre-breaking and series-breaking conventions that all felt lessened by being sandwiched next to each other.

The main thing people overlook is that Cad Bane, Admiral Thrawn, Calo Nord, Face Loren, Darth Bane and so many of the greatest Star Wars characters didn't even debut in the mainline movies. The more Star Wars products I consume, the more enamored I get with the old Rogue Squadron book series. Man, imagine if they made those into a several limited seasons of a prestige TV show! It would be a great ensemble piece with some unique action sequences we really never saw fleshed out in the Star Wars films. I've always been much more interested in the non-Force wielding characters in the Star Wars universe. That's where the meat of politics, corruption, military, crime, and trade come together to create a real backdrop for the goofy zen magic nonsense.

And lol at people thinking Shakespeare is trash. Board 8 is a weird fucking place.

I thought about doing more Astro City this week, but instead I changed my mind. For week 10, we're going to the opposite side of the cosmos and hitting up the DC Universe's space-based fare. We'll be reading The Omega Men #1-12, a self-contained mini-series featuring the talents of Tom King, currently one of the hottest writers in the DC stable. He's probably best known for his work on Mister Miracle and of course Batman, but his first real rise in profile at DC came with this tale of the Vegans. And I don't mean people who refuse to eat meat.

In the star system of Vega, there is a ragtag group of rebels fighting an evil Empire. And when good ol' Green Lantern Kyle Rayner tries to step in and end the civil strife, he's left without a ring and without a way home. Kyle is inserted forcefully into said rebellion, and hijinks pursue from there.

I think this is a great mini-series, and it's completely different from what you get on the Marvel side, so it should be a lot of fun for all of us to read together!

Next week is Christmas week, so I'll be doing a few really short Christmas stories (including one of the first comics I ever bought with my own money!) so if you need a week to jump back in, that will be a great one.

If all of the fictional thunder gods that have crossed over with the DC Universe, this is my second favorite. And only by a hair! Raiden has a very bizarre personality that has always felt very particular to him and him alone; I've really never seen another character like him in another medium (although it's not like I'm some sort of encyclopedic index of the entirety of fiction), and I've always dug his demeanor and his ability to get down and dirty with the rest of the MK rabble when necessary.

The perennial court jester of the South Park cast, Randy is a perfect foolish everyman character on a show where the introspection belongs to the young'uns. Whether he's drunkenly berating the police for attempting to quash his post-election fun or drunkenly berating baseball fans for a myriad of fictional reasons, Randy has always represented the most ignorant aspects of American society in a sharply satirical way, and I appreciate that sort of unforgiving lampooning.

For Scarlet's information, I realized my Battle write-up was bad anyway.

Between Conquest and Battle, I enjoyed the subtleties to show that this Caesar was changing the way everything was working, I did not find either movie boring and found myself actually forgiving a lot more of it than things I ranked lower. I found both shows battle segments to be well handled considering it is the old attempt at non-animated children's shows. Battle especially has a very good continuation while time skipping in my eyes to Conquest.

Thanks. I was just curious because I found it really difficult to jibe that opinion based on what I've seen of your opinions in the past.

Satirically brilliant and witty social commentary packaged behind a phenomenal actor, Beale is still a prescient image in a world of 24/7 news cycles. Network was a prophetic film and Beale is its prophet. With a deep, frightening story of the truth behind the press and power, Network needed a strong anchor to take it from a movie and turn it into an allegory, a fable. Beale is the perfect character for Network, and Network is the perfect vehicle for Howard Beale. Just excellent.

Magic isn't particularly adept at creating engaging characters, and part of that is the nature of how the game functions. It builds wide and not deep. But Urza is definitely the character I see the most potential in. If I was to create an MTG film, Urza is the natural choice for the lead. The story of Urza and Mishra is meaningful and personal, and the following years of guilt and hopeful redemption really just build upon a strong base and are a great template for a writer to come along and really build a franchise.

He's got that hooker with a heart of gold story arc in his early appearances, and over the years he's matured into a veteran hero and a character deserving of the top position in the X-books.

When you do this character right (Alan Grant), you have the opportunity to really dig your knuckles into the almost fascistic and authoritarian endgames of Gotham's most notable heroes. Anarky is the natural response to a Batman that deems himself a full service executive branch, crying out in a natural response as the vox populi Gotham requires after years of Batman. There's a wonderful opportunity every time Anarky comes out to dig into a philosophical discussion about the role of vigilantes and the nature and source of crime in the ever-expanding world of the city.

Rating: 68 out of 100

I think, oftentimes, Grand Theft Auto dips itself outside of satire and into farce. Trevor is a character that I felt had some super-huge highs but also some lows where the writing really just went overboard and exaggerated the character into a cartoonish caricature of what it should have been. It was never the acting, however. I found that all of my issues lay at the feet of the writers when he went beyond being sick and cruel and crazy and became sort of foolish and nonsensical even to the internal logic of the crazy they were presenting. In a world where there was at least some subtlety to the hilarious story of Michael, Trevor was almost a step backwards at times. But! That's only 15% of the time. There's a solid 85% of the time where Trevor is the scene stealer he's meant to be.

One of my favorite characters in musical history, Harold Hill is both phenomenal as a period piece character and also a perfect example of the charming rogue. The development of Hill is endearing and the charisma of Robert Preston in the role was able to turn an inherently awful character into an strangely unlikely hero. Hill straddles a line of condescension and earnestness in every lie he weaves, and the result is just fantastic. It's clear that, if you were ever going to be bamboozled by someone, Hill is the one who will make you feel the best while it happens. And that's a bizarre contradiction of terms, yet it still somehow works throughout The Music Man.

If you can't afford Han Solo for your TV show, this is the next step down. As an actor, Nathan Fillion has actually come more and more into his own as he's aged. Firefly suffers from its short length and desire to create an ensemble piece. With more time, I feel like I could have really dug into the meat of Reynolds and found something I really, really liked. However, he is a little too grounded in the necessary tropes of science fiction writing that he doesn't reach those upper echelons of grand spacefaring heroes.

As a film, Citizen Kane is fantastic, but as a character, I think the William Randolph Heart-a-like relies more on a strong acting performance than a particularly interesting character. It doesn't resonate with me as much simply because I've never been enamored with the man behind the movie (Hearst). I also think the character is very tidily tied up at the end of the film; there's really no room for further exploration. Kane also has a sense of finality that makes me uninterested in returning to the film for future viewings as well. It's an intense experience of an entire lifetime wrapped up in a unique and interesting character, but not necessarily one I find particularly endearing.
