Enough to end world hunger

it's not a funding problem

it's a logistics problem

that amount of money is a rounding error in the decades ahead for the scale of revenue of the federal government, if it was a money problem we could just throw mountains of money at the problem. it's really just a problem of the technology needing massive investments over time so we can grow more food where people are

https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2020/11/20/this-2-acre-vertical-farm-out-produces-750-acre-flat-farms/

stuff like this, basically. it'll solve the problem, unlimited food that is so plentiful it might as well be free and will probably actually end up free because of the massive savings to our tax revenue from spending less on healthcare in the long run when everyone's living longer (fingerscrossed)

Are we talking about laziness? About the necessity of new ways of living once most labor is automated?

Because there are many ways in which it can be pathetic to want freedom without responsibility, as well as logical to want freedom without responsibility. To the lazy, responsibility is a burden. To those who have no more access to labor due to automation in the future, what kind of responsibility could be given to them at that scale of unemployment? There simply won't be enough interesting / relevant work to do to fund their lives with our current way of "working for a living"

So we'll end up with UBI or something like this: https://moores.samaltman.com/

and that will definitely be freedom without responsibilities, or at least without as many responsibilities as we have now with how we "work for a living"

people can just become lifelong students and work a craft periodically to have some relevant practical skill, otherwise contributing to open source projects or advancing science/art/music more. I think that's what will happen.

Government is doing a lot to advance space tech, actually. It's actually a public-private partnership. What these billionaires are doing couldn't be done without significant public funding and they know it. But technically they still have enough shares to justify being the ones taking this risk, so people generally just applaud that because it's definitely scary to be at the edge of science that way no matter what tbh.

We contribute to the extensive literature on international influences on democratization and democratic breakdowns by conceptualizing hegemonic mechanisms of regime change and assessing them empirically. Our findings are based on a multi-methods approach and highlight the varying importance of hegemonic influences in post-1945 Latin America. We argue that US support for democratization was consistent in the wave of transitions to democracy that began in Latin America in 1978 and that it was decisive in many of these transitions. While past work has attributed responsibility to the US for the waves of democratic breakdowns from 1948 to 1956 and 1964 to 1976, an examination of the 27 breakdowns from 1945 to 2010 gives reason to doubt this interpretation. Future research could use these conceptual and methodological tools to explore the role of other powers in waves of democracy and authoritarianism.

People want nice things. We have to find a way to keep producing nice things, be it in orbit or with modern technology enabling more sustainable production. No one will want to hear that we should all become poorer or submit to new overlords and their rules on consumption, because those are not the necessary or only solutions to the problem of CO2 emissions.

I do not recall finding good evidence for marijuana causing psychosis - the studies that exist that I saw showed a small association, not causation, and it was heavily dependent on things like genetic predisposition to psychosis (there's a gene called AK1 or something like that). And if you do it in adolescence or not.

Generally when accounting for age and predisposition to psychosis, it is an association but no clear causal relationship has been shown. Happy to be shown new information if anyone found any.

If anyone here has extra time, consider getting involved in some kind of engineering work that is aimed at solving this problem.

Even 100 more brains working on this stuff, could make a difference.

You can also plant a tree for as little as $1 through the National Forest Foundation, if you want to make a difference with some spare change or even with volunteering.

https://www.nationalforests.org/tree-planting-programs/climate

Through our 50 Million for Our Forests campaign, the NFF offers you a proven, immediate and effective solution to fight climate change. For every $2 you donate to the NFF, we will plant 2 trees, and you will help remove 1 Metric ton (Mt) of CO2e from the atmosphere over the life of those trees.

yep. once GND is a thing and everyone sees the rocket fuel for the economy theyre gonna want more. I think well see huge gains in household wealth across the board over the next 10 years as a result, just a matter of time for them to do it.

Bidens first infrastructure bills are a good start and those look like theyre gonna actually be a thing now

edit: the tankies on the left too, theyre also afraid of climate change being solvable without resorting to totalitarian control of economy like in the Soviet Union

because of Doomers, people fail to see how close we are to seeing a Star Trek economy emerge

like if child tax credits every month become permanent and we have this unemployment extended permanently and get free or affordable college and good healthcarewe will have made it

throw in the Green New Deal for more infrastructure spending and we can solve climate change still in our lifetime

what would happen if media was more positive/optimistic about this? I reckon theyd get less ad revenue since fear sells more :/
