I went for breakfast yesterday. They had one line cook and just the manager on-duty waiting tables. Manager was going back and forth from tables to kitchen to help the cook. I asked her why so shorthanded?. She said she scheduled 6 interviews and none of them showed up. Said they were down to 4 servers and 5 line cooks on their roster. They pay cooks 10.50/hr and servers 4.50/hr plus tips. She said she's been working 80 hour weeks for months. I wished her well.

My own job is still having problems finding staff too. It took us a month to fill a position and they quit after 2 days of training.

It's almost like wages that low aren't worth the misery. Especially if you're already miserable, why add miserable and exhausted to your plate.

Companies that consider tips a part of their payment are fucking garbage

Iirc, Sonic does the same thing. They pay you well below minimum, but allow you tips to compensate. I think stuff like that should be illegal

This.

If I was that manager I'd be looking for a way out. Working 80 hour weeks and making less than I do working 40.

Fuck that.

I feel like understaffed kinda self perputating too. New people more likely to quit because the fuckery of being understaffed.

Maybe it's store-dependent? I've been to some Sonics where they specifically ask you if you want change (several dollars worth) and I'm like...yes, I do.

This is one of the worst parts of tipping culture for me where I will sometimes have no clue who the fuck im supposed to tip. And then I find out later I was supposed to tip someone I didn't and feel like crap about it. Like there was this one dude in a parking garage I apparently was supposed to. And this one outside bag check spot at the airport. Then later I mention to someone I did the thing and they're like "oh did you tip them?? You're supposed to"

WELL HOW THE FUCK AM I MEANT TO KNOW THAT THEN

We've reached peak greed.

The iron law of wages is that people will pay the minimum amount it takes to keep people from starving. Yet, we actually live in a generation where employers want to pay less than what it realistically takes to keep someone alive.

People are supposed to pack into apartments like rats, split meals, and use food stamps to supplement. It's mortifying.

I'm attempting to hire seasonal employees (August-May) $15/hr to do some pretty easy data entry stuff. Half of the people haven't shown up to the interview. The people that have are overall better quality than I've found in the past though which is nice.

Yeah, that's a really weird thing. Those jobs don't pay shit, but they essentially guilt trip people into thinking the job is critical for your life and your career moving forward.

TJ Maxx tried to do that shit to me. They were paying me $7.75/hour. I told them that I needed 35 - 40 hours/week. It's a lot for a retail place to just give a new guy 35 - 40 hours, but they wouldn't give me any more than 20. I was overdrafting on my bank account just trying to pay for gas to make it to work some weeks. Then they were spreading those 20 hours out over 5 days and I was closing every day.

Then they cut me down to 15 hours per week. I quit with no notice. I didn't give a shit. I got another job where I could work 40 hours consistently, so TJ Maxx didn't matter to me any more. The store manager tried to guilt trip me and say that quitting with no notice would be bad for my career because I wouldn't be able to use them as a reference.
  • No job after that has even asked about my experience at TJ Maxx because the job experience wasn't relevant.
  • ~15 years later, I still include them on my resume just to show my full work history, but no company has even bothered to ask about my experience there. Because it doesn't matter.

What the manager didnt tell you is that there are fifteen other workers on staff, but corporate will not allow them to have more people on the floor because theyre too cheap to write the checks.

Also, we should all be boycotting any kind of restaurant. Youre literally enabling worker abuse by putting money in the business when theyre treating the workers like tools.

i worked a fuckload of shitty retail jobs, a call center, and an office job before i made it to my current profession. i've been fired twice, was about to be fired before i walked out another time, and on other occasions i quit but was put in as a fire

i only got a bad reference once and in hindsight i could have easily avoided it (this led to the time that i would have got fired if i didn't walk out, but i hated the fuck out of that job and my boss was harassing me and i think she would've found something else to hang me on if she could've)

i've since been hired to do my dream job, have excellent job security, and everything is going to be smooth sailing from hereon out

It's gaslighting.

People need an actual incentive to work. That's how it's always worked. Nobody wants to exhaust themselves for table scraps.

Employers are instead trying to flip it as people being too lazy, when the reality is that the stress and anxiety involved with these jobs aren't worth the laughable pay that doesn't even cover rent anymore.
