I don't know why but the mgs remake not rerecording audio feels kinda unfortunate? I love the original cast of course but it seems a little "cheap" of them. Like they're not putting their all into this like the REmakes

Nothing wrong with ff7 being your favorite. It's still #2 to me, and I perfectly understand it's magnum opus reputation. 6 too, though I have less history and personal love for it.

In the games I'm talking about I don't think that's actually true. FF7 doesn't give you materia that "just works" against all enemies. You're already making a decision based on trading magic vs physical stats, or you're actively choosing which materia to put ap into (since you only have so many spaces, and this creates a sense of commitment). It does take a while before you get enough materia to actually put together creative combos, but even small early choices are nice to make.

I'm not saying there isn't any creativity possibility, which does differentiate itself from FFIV, but it's really buried compared to most entries in the series. Like an open world game that technically has freedom, but if you follow the big arrow on the screen, not only will you be fine, but you will never even feel like you missed out on anything. I think most FF games you will start to feel the strain of not paying attention to the things you can do by the end. Maybe FFX is just too easy?

That's a good point, the game is very heavy handed with its design so that you basically just have to "match the colors/shapes" for most battles, really deincentivizing creativity in the first place. Which is basically like FFIV, the game gives you dungeons with gimmicks that are suited for the current party you have. It's not bad design, but it's definitely the less interesting approach to me.

Still curious how the expert grid plays out though.

Yeah it would take a bit to go to every chocobo forest in order, get all the chocographs, and then actually find the places on the world map to get the items.

I...see. So it's extremely inefficient. Like there can't be a point to doing that instead of just going down the natural path set out for you. Kimahri's route sucks and then he has to start at the beginning of someone else's.

I rest my case. When I think meaningful choices I mean job systems, junctioning, even materia or just the joy of finding cool equipment in 9 and the options it gives your loadout.

chocobo hot & cold is insanely rewarding, pretty sure lots of the best stuff is behind that. It is too bad you'll be getting outdated stuff for a bit if you start late.

Level 1 locks don't hide anything but very short paths that have extra stat boosts.

I don't play blitzball early but do teleport spheres even let you go wherever you want?

Level 1 key spheres do not unlock anything but short paths for some stat upgrades. You cannot take your characters on different paths until endgame.

Man I wish I got to this "super easy" tactics. Tried a few times to get into the game just to get into some forced encounter with a party I wasn't serious about and then you can't go back and ugh

Expert grid yes but whats the ton of freedom you get on standard? Ok kimahri goes in a circle and you can choose how that goes, next? Oh wait you get a special sphere around the calm lands so one character can go "off-grid" for 1 ability. Anything else?

Like FFIV I don't really appreciate the linearity of the game design. Note: I don't care about the level design being linear.

I mean it's still really good first time through but the sphere grid doesn't let you do anything with it until basically post game and that's not my favorite kind of content to now be able to experiment with setups.

It's not like those are vivis best spells so it's kinda w/e to me.

FFIV is pretty impeccably paced for an snes rpg, but it's just way too simple for me. There's like no way to play the game any other way on replays.

Yeah I like having a reason to be swapping out equipment instead of just slapping the latest/highest stats on.

Freya being forgotten was an intentional choice by the writers. Thats her entire character arc.

At the end she gets back with Fratley even though he could never get back his old memories. This shows character development as "being forgotten is worse than death" doesn't apply anymore, showing she can find value making new memories with him.

Well that and kuja railed against his fate which the main cast was like low-key inspired by, at least post credits.

Hell yeah for a long time I considered FFV my favorite of the 2D games. I think FFVI might be inching closer though.

Speaking of dubs though, why doesn't Nintendo lipsync for the English language? Square games do it all the time and the English speaking sales gotta be bigger than the Japanese.

A battle lasting 25 chapters when it's an actual, like, BATTLE with tens of thousands of men and dozens of POV characters is a hell of a lot more acceptable to me nowadays than a battle lasting 25 chapters where 2 dudes are smacking eachother on a mountain while a bunch of other people watch.

Your stats don't drop that much if you go from 100 to 90. And it's not all that useful to use most magic anyway if you're min/maxing. Plus the most useful ones to use like curaga are easily replenished.
