I'm not sure when pleading "No Contest" (or "nolo contendere" in Latin) has any function, personally, but I've never had to stand before a judge and make a criminal plea. I usually only see people do this when they're dead to rights anyway but I have no clue what it's supposed to accomplish because they end up getting max or near-max sentences.

You can argue its not an appropriate sentence or that the law doesn't reflect the crime but I suspect there were mitigating factors. Either way, corruption seems like the wrong descriptor here.

From what I can tell by every bit of footage I've seen, this is a true paint-by-the-numbers remake. Like they've literally just taken the same exact game and given it relatively newish coat of paint. I'm not surprised its not being lauded as a masterpiece.

There are pros and cons, and like any job the main reason it sucks has nothing to do with the work and everything to do with management and the culture.

In an ideal world, you are given autonomy to do the kind of detail orientated engineering work you like, and you are given decision making control over certain technical or design decisions. And you get to have a workstation that is pretty much custom to you, and few people bother you or call you with client nonsense.

So compare that to a typical office job where you are given a shitty budget Dell computer and you can't even explain your job because it's pretty much just taking phone calls and sending people emails to check if they're happy and updating spreadsheets.

Im sure they know that but dont want to sacrifice their precious work schedule concept or cause issues across the company as a whole to solve the problem. Not uncommon.

I think they're scared of "losing the culture" or scared that everyone will expect to work from home all the time.

Just a rant topic, but if you like tales of workplace stupidity then you've come to the right place.

I work for a software development company in a fairly remote location, and we have have one issue that happens over and over again and they just can't quite figure out how to resolve it: developers start the job, they last about a year and then they get fired or they quit. Why?

Well, in this town and the surrounding towns, there are next to no people who have the particular stack of programming skills required to do this job. That doesn't stop them from trying out the locals though. And it turns out your community college comp-sci certificate didn't prepare you for building delphi systems. Those are the ones that get fired.

Their next bet is to try out the people in the neighbouring city, 50 miles away. These people have the skills and the aptitude. But they leave. Why do they leave?

Because our company will not let them work from home. At all.

Let that sink in. A role where we need someone to do nothing but write code in a dark room and speak to no one. A role where the personality profile of most people who like this sort of work is to be as anti social as possible. The most important thing our company expects of these people is that they must be willing to drive 100 miles every day to go to work and be present in the office.

And here's the real kicker: our company - almost somewhat proudly - issues virtually no KPIs. "We don't like to micro manage", my operations director told me proudly. That's why our support team don't get pulled up on call or ticket volume, or why developers don't get questioned on their timesheets.

That is, except for bums on seats. THE MOST important thing is that everyone needs to come into the office, and be here at the office between the hours of 9am and 5.30pm.

Bill Burr has successfully dodged every controversy this way by just never really bringing shit like this up. he understand how fickle the internet is. In two weeks time these people won't even remember there was ever an issue.

I don't know why more celebrities don't employ this tactic. As soon as you commit to an apology or a statement you're basically creating a permanent outrage on your record.

Bill Burr leans left as far as I can tell (simply appearing on Joe Rogan isn't really any indicator he doesnt), but he is such a crotchety asshole(like George Carlin) that both sides kind of like him.

Strategically this also brings more technical knowledge in-house enabling us to more dynamically support our growing and very demanding operation.

I'm ok with simple types of bread because you can mostly go by feel and feedback.

But most desserts sap all the joy of cooking for me. It's a whole lot of precise measuring, specialty equipment that is annoying to clean and then waiting a lot, and you only find out at the end whether you fucked up or not.

I keep wanting to make cake and then discover the recipe is like 40 steps of measuring things at different levels of cold or room temperature and then whisking it a lot.

I'll check out some of these programs. Ccleaner has gone to shit though, word of warning. Just feels like malware now.

Do you have any games installed? Games, especially modern ones can be pretty massive. Other stuff might be if you have video files or a lot of music saved somewhere.

If you look at it from a self-insert fantasy perspective it makes perfect sense.

For a nerd wanting some escapism, these characters justify common personality traits that are otherwise seen as anti-social or low value or whatever.

See you aren't stupid, you're just earnest. You aren't a low achiever, you just haven't found your special hidden talent yet. You're not anti-social, you're just a mysterious loner. You'd be a great friend, if only people saw you for what you are.

And the power of friendship is probably the most compelling emotional problem for teenagers who are struggling with making friends in middle school.

That's the whole thing.

If they're too cool or too flawed then they fail at the primary purpose of being a shonen protagonist, which is to act as a vessel for your self-insert fantasy.

They have to have latent supernatural talents that haven't been recognised by anyone as yet. They have to be bad with girls, not very smart, morally just in all the most important ways.

Basically it's more or less impossible for a shonen protagonist to not be lame.
