The books were never focused on comedy. Most comedy in the books is derived from the narrator's commentary, not the character interactions. For the most part, the character interactions were either depressing or setting up false hope in order to make certain parts hit even harder. Having such a large focus on comedy is completely counter to the tone of the books and the atmosphere the show itself establishes in its opening minutes. It sounds as if you remember the books as being far deeper and darker than they were.
