Yep. The key rhetorical trick is distancing and minimizing the depths of racial oppression in this country. It must all be considered in the past, despite what is happening now. Everything bad that happened is from before the speaker was born, however old they are. Either that, or the speaker just came to this country yesterday. People proudly claim to be members of the greatest nation on earth, but only take the good. We cherish winning WW2, but distance ourselves from what happened to the black people that came back home to be attacked and killed here. We claim all of the inventions of the past, but none of creative ways of denying people their rights through poll taxes, redlining, school finance systems etc.

Basically, American history starts with the most oppression possible short of just genociding an entire race, and has moved back one step at a time only when forced. At most you can say there's been some semblance of democracy and equality since the mid 70s, and people are acting like everything that happened before then is irrelevant and what's happening now isn't happening. I guarantee you that in 40 years, people will be admitting there was widespread racism happening now, but will deny that it's happening then.

Our economic prospects were kneecapped just as many of us should have been coming into our own. I don't think people were talking about millennials being particularly stunted or childish before 2008. That started in the aftermath of the Great Recession as we got wrecked by an economy of low employment, sparse or excessive hours, low worker and low worker power. We were also saddled with extreme amounts of student loan debt that we took in the expectation of a stable economy. These factors combined to make home ownership, or even moving out a pipedream for many of us.

The Great Depression generation had WWII and the New Deal to revive them and help them live normal lives. They had unions, college wasn't required. We've had the Great Recession, bailouts to further income inequality, a stagnant recovery, and now Covid and another recession when many of us are supposed to be reaching our peak incomes. It's not good, fam.

Demonize the police and build up the narrative that they are the problem, this is what happens. Pointing fingers at the entire police force across America because one bad cop had his knee on a guy's neck.

Hey peaceful protesters, remember when you said you don't want to be demonized and viewed as violent, because some other people decided to riot and loot?

Telling police not to let the door hit them on the way out is not violence by any stretch of the imagination. The imagination doesn't have to stretch too far to see violence in abandoning the people you swore to protect due to an increase in accountability.

Further, even people saying abolish the police tomorrow aren't saying to replace it with nothing like these cops will be by being in dereliction of duty. They want to build up state capacity and address the root causes of crime by shifting resources away from violence and incarceration toward housing, education, healthcare, and other things that actually make people happy and safe. And they wanted to move away from having people with guns show up to handle social issues once they've gotten out of control and having actual experts show up to address issues of addiction, mental health, homelessness, school issues etc.

Instead, officers as an institution are going to put YOU in danger to prove a cheap political point. And you're applauding them for it and blaming the people who simply wanted accountability and something less than absolute impunity and fawning obedience.

There's little evidence beyond a few tweets that they're actually doing this in any real numbers. And even if they are, why should they be immune from mockery for proving protesters right? They want impunity and quit at the first sign that people aren't putting up with impunity anymore. I doubt you'd have a problem with that if it was a unionized teacher or professor who whined about the government finally cracking down on sex scandals in the workplace and threatened to wreck the education system in revenge.

Some of you in this very topic blatantly, studiously refused to condemn police officers macing a child and other peaceful protesters and then arresting and imprisoning a bystander that filled the police brutality. Some of you have also victim blamed journalists being attacked by out of control police. Your ideas of law and order are sociopathic and opposed to any concept of the police as servants of the public rather than an occupying force that cracks skulls maintain their own power and the power of their backers.

It's funny because cops and their attorney's slice and dice time in every incident to justify their actions. They've gotten the law to say only the moment of the shooting matters, even if the victim was doing absolutely nothing wrong beforehand. But now that an officer has shot a person while running away, @Mark_DeRosa , other officers, and their defenders want us to focus on what happened outside of the moment of the shooting. Convenient.

30 years ago it didn't matter what opinions you had at work. People spoke openly and freely. It didn't matter what you did outside of work, either.

There's been a dramatic shift in our country and there is essentially no freedom of speech anymore. Technically you have freedom of speech if you're a millionaire and don't need to rely on companies to make a living. But this is not practical for the average person.

30 years ago there was rampant racial and sexual discrimination and harassment in the workplace that damaged the careers of countless people. Much like an unmoderated forum or online chat, letting anything go means minorities and women immediately get shit on. Immediately. The world was not better when there was no accountability for what was said during work.

People still have freedom of speech, what they don't have is impunity. If you don't want people getting fired for making the company look bad with bigoted statements outside work or exposing the company to liability for bigotry at work, support unions and kill at will employment.

Maybe racial segregation and a school funding system that was created to preserve it and relies on it is the problem? Not shifting around which schools people can go to while they're still stuck in an otherwise dysfunctional and abandoned neighborhood. Think of the hatred necessary to do these types of things. Think of the hatred and widespread lack of empathy it takes to do it in a group. Think of hatred and indifference it takes to take pictures and souvenirs and send postcards of your actions to your family, and yet the government does nothing or even actively cheers you on. It may even be government officials stringing people up. Imagine that was proceeded by hereditary commercialized chattel slavery. Then followed by/concurrent with Jim Crow segregation. Imagine all of that and then thinking all that hatred went away after MLK made a speech or LBJ signed a law. Even while black people continue to be poorer, less healthy, de facto racial segregation actually increases in many ways, millions of black people are locked away in prisons and more are harassed, survived, or killed by police.

Despite all of this, many people thought racism functionally ended up until two weeks ago, and even now. The simple statement that Black Lives Matter was and still is vilified. People say never forget 9/11, but then turn around forget and say you should forget slavery, Jim Crow, and mass incarceration and that you are just whining or race baiting or refusing to take personal responsibility when you mention all of this. What a trip.

The bars of the various states are legal cartels, populated entirely by lawyers. So you have lawyers, policing lawyers, represented by other lawyers. As such the enforcers are very reluctant to enforce harsh punishments that may come back to bite them, and the lawyer being accused is very likely to have a good lawyer.

If you DIDN'T believe police would react in a violent manner, then why do you protest in the first place? And if you DID believe they would act violently, why would you knowingly bring a small child right in the middle of it? Who the hell taught you to debate anyway?

You are the one arguing that police will inevitably be violent towards protesters as support for the idea that the parents and not the macers should be blamed for the macing. I am able to recognize that police are not always violent towards peaceful protesters because some of them have brains. You are the one asserting that they would and should act like bears. We've see many instances of police not escalating protests with unprovoked violence, and wonder of wonders, those protests tend to stay peaceful.

You can still justifiably consider the police brutal without expecting them to also attack children unprovoked. Attacking peaceful protesters is just one type of police brutality. It was added to the list because of actions like macing children, it wasn't the catalyst for the protest.

The protesters were not stealing or murdering. They were peacefully protesting police brutality and had police brutality committed against them.
