Kind of agree tbqh

I'm 30 this year, and I think back to my parents and friends' parents in their 30s, and they just seem so much more "grown up" than I feel. I'm married, have a mortgage, will start trying for kids in the next few months, and yet I still don't feel as "grown up" as my parents seemed when I was younger. It's odd.

Are you sure that's just not young-you thinking adults are any more particularly "together" as a whole than younger people are, and then that affecting how you see yourself now?

I don't know. I think it's because I still play video games, go to the pub/bar with friends regularly, whereas all my parents seemed to do was work and stress.

Internet is largely to blame for this, I think. It's made it easier to stay in contact with your childhood hobbies whereas older generations were more or less forced to "get over it" because they didn't have these easy distractions.

Our economic prospects were kneecapped just as many of us should have been coming into our own. I don't think people were talking about millennials being particularly stunted or childish before 2008. That started in the aftermath of the Great Recession as we got wrecked by an economy of low employment, sparse or excessive hours, low worker and low worker power. We were also saddled with extreme amounts of student loan debt that we took in the expectation of a stable economy. These factors combined to make home ownership, or even moving out a pipedream for many of us.

The Great Depression generation had WWII and the New Deal to revive them and help them live normal lives. They had unions, college wasn't required. We've had the Great Recession, bailouts to further income inequality, a stagnant recovery, and now Covid and another recession when many of us are supposed to be reaching our peak incomes. It's not good, fam.

I'm 30 and almost share this sentiment. Though also.
1. Do we have evidence that our predecessors didn't also feel this way? I have heard countless older people talk about how quickly life goes by and how 'unprepared' they felt.
2. We're still not sure how Zoomers will turn out. Even if it is true that we're experiencing something different than previous generations, we can't be sure that the next generation won't do the same thing or be worse.

I'm not entirely sure I buy this too much

Also if the definition of "never growing up" means "still maintaining an interest in some things they were interested in as kids" than that's pretty dumb

I'm in my late 20s and basically everyone I know is getting married, buying houses, and/or having kids. Seems pretty grown up to me

I think it's because where you're at right now is where a lot of boomers were at by 25 (and I don't mean this as an insult as this is sort of the norm now).

What's crazy about this is that it's true regardless of the person's skill or education level. I have a handful of friends who make 4 times as much as me and they're still eating boxed mac and cheese and 5 dollar Hot and Readys on the regular while binging The Office for the Nth time.

I enjoy cooking and will do more as my kids get older. The weeks they aren't here I cook more. I don't know what the rush is to watch tv and be lazy. A decent meal at most takes under 40 mins from prep to finish.

And I find many dislike going to work and just wanna be rich when most rich people actually worked hard to get where they are.

Social Security and Medicare have been extremely unhelpful. A $25 trillion debt as well. All of this is damaging to financial independence. But nobody wants to talk about it and refers to it as the third rail because NIMBY. "Don't take MY benefits away! I worked for those!!" even though by and large, they didn't, it pays out more than they ever put in (particularly the city-bankrupting union pensions). The average retiree is actually getting richer due to these programs, we even pay out to the wealthiest individuals, and the ratio of current workers to retiree has dropped drastically from something like 30:1 to 3:1. People are having tons of fees taken out of their paychecks to subsidize benefits programs that will not exist by the time they get old. I would not hesitate to call it generational theft. Late socialism has failed and has left a massive debt in its wake.
