These people's idea of what education is...it's a mechanism of control for parents to transmit their ideas, their prejudices, and their fears. They want absolute control of parents to extend to the classroom and to never be challenged, and when actual education or awareness may get in the way, education must yield.

Anything that makes the most paranoid, bigoted, or insane parent "uncomfortable" can be vetoed by any parent. This is a far more advanced version of the "safe space" and cancel culture hysteria they're worried about. Each kid becomes a potential informant to get a teacher or principal fired for trying to teach anything that could upset a brain worm infested Florida parent that sees CRT and grooming behind every rock.

If any of us did this, police would wake us up at 3am with a raid and charge us with a hyperfelony.

If you have an issue with tipping culture, the solution is to organize with and support workers fighting for regular living wages, changes to the laws about what/how restaurants can pay servers, increase penalties for wage theft or not meeting required wages etc. It's not to stiff individual servers, that does nothing to affect any system. Neither does posting angry rants about "entitled servers." If the system annoys you so much, do something to help change it! Then you'll never have to worry about tips again!

I actually think that's shifting. Cause now everyone is so critical, negative and depressed that it seems more intelligent to figure out how to be optimistic and happy. People think cynicism and negativity as a default make you smart because smart people are often cynical and sound negative to them. But the whole name of the game is being cynical about the right things and at the right time.

When you're reflexively cynical and do it when it's not appropriate, that's just a different type of being dumb.

This attitude exists across many subjects, not just media consumption. I've found it especially annoying in politics and scientific pursuits.

It's terrifying that your mind could decide to just betray you like that. It's pretty clear that you have little control over your actions if you end up in a situation like that, anything could happen.

What's unhinged about criticizing a system that appears to be killing the world, destabilizing politics and culture, and leaving people feeling hopeless?

People like Obama say that we should keep the system that funnels all resources and power to the top, and tell us that in exchange, those on the bottom "should" be helped out and inequality is a "concern." But we always get the inequality first and the help for those on the bottom never materializes. And those with the resources use them to push tax cuts, austerity, and the privatization or elimination of the benefits and safety nets we do have (destruction of unions, cuts to healthcare, welfare, education etc).

It was the second biggest crime of the 21st century.

The first is oil companies and billionaires blocking knowledge and measures related to climate change.

They increased their police budget, just like almost everywhere else did.

Police are simply refusing to police if they have even the slightest bit of oversight and can't kill and detain with impunity.

Murders and a few other high profile crimes have gone up nationwide, in both liberal and conservative areas, but crime is still far far lower than it was in the 80s and 90s.

All of you blaming anything on a defunding that did not even occur are being suckered in by a Fox New narrative (as in this is literally a Fox News article, not a Yahoo one).

Also, defunding doesn't just mean taking money away from police, it means equitably redistributing societal resources towards things that actually prevent crime, like reducing poverty and precarity in general. If you don't do that too, it's not "defunding the police." There was nothing wrong with the slogan, you're simply getting your understanding of it from articles like this.

It's abstracted financial gambling/speculation, a bigger fool scam, a get rich quick scheme, a distributed cult, and also an ideological fantasy that hypercapitalism will free people from the ratrace of capitalism or the systems of control and power (like banks and governments) that maintain it.

TC, you're doing great. If you're that high up in rankings, there's no need to worry about imposter syndrome, even the best lose relatively frequently at almost any game/sport/etc.

You're selling yourself short on your ability to get educated, if you have the dedication to do something like the Guilty Gear thing and to be so hard on yourself, you have the ability to do well in college. While it's probably a good idea to work on that aspect of yourself so that you're not beating yourself up, it can also be turned towards good. It could lead you to a type of success that others can't realistically achieve. And trying is better than not, you always want to be able to tell yourself that you did all you could to live the best version of your life.

As for the ARM thing, the Fed continues to state that their plan is to increase interest rates. They're gonna keep going up, with no end in sight, so doing an adjustable rate probably doesn't make sense unless you have some reason to think we're near the ceiling of rate increases. The only indication of that is the issues the banks are having.

The job of these people is to cut off any path forward that involves even a whiff of reduced profit, economic power, or political power for capital. Those must be presented as laughable, unthinkable, and not worthy of discussion. At the same time any amount of pain to be suffered by working people is acceptable, and it's the only way.

If labor is causing 1/3rd, supply chains 1/3rd, and corporate profiteering 1/3rd, all pain MUST be dumped on labor, there's simply no other way to organize things. Inflation must be presented as something that can only be addressed through monetary policy, which means only through the Fed, which means only through higher interest rates, which means only labor will feel the pain.

He says in one breath that he's doing this to save the purchasing power of minorities and people without college educations, but ignores that they're not gonna have much purchasing power when they're the first fired in the recession they're intentionally causing. He does the same thing with labor power as if they're not explicitly pledging to cap and break labor power.

Profits are untouchable, protected by a reality distortion field, labor is free real estate.

This is the real scary part. How are people supposed to travel across the country when they could be pedophiliac murderers guilty of 10 felonies in one state and completely upstanding citizens in the next? Republicans can pretend to be appalled for a minute when MTG suggests secession, but they clearly want to fracture the country. Absolutely. We're going to see the rapid development of a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" culture when it comes to immigrations status. That'll help businesses and some others, but it won't help the families and communities of undocumented people or undocumented people themselves.

Hmm, reading it, if you give rides for a living, having procedures to minimize what you know about your customers would probably be a good idea. By having business practices that establish it would not be reasonable for you to know the immigration status, you would be safe from prosecution.

You would think so, but I've worked on a case within the last year where a federal judge held the opposite with respect to housing. The judge ruled that even though landlords don't check for immigration status, are not required to check, and even though the government knowingly rents to undocumented immigrants, it's potentially illegal to rent without checking immigration status.

There's no doubt that Florida will ask for the same analysis and that there are judges in Florida and the 11th Circuit willing to reach that conclusion. And whatever they decide will apply to housing, sheltering, transportation, and employment.

The standard mirrors federal law because it's "knowing or had reason to know" essentially. Good luck proving that you didn't know or at least had reason to know once some prosecutor wants to boost their career by making an example out of you. SB 1718 is going to pass. This bill will make it a felony to transport (including personal rides, buses, ridesharing/taxis), shelter (including renting or just providing a place to stay), or employing undocumented people.

It'll require hospitals to collect data on the immigration status of undocumented patients, and in another provision, forbids any entity from refusing to send collected data to federal law enforcement.

It'll require the collection of DNA samples for people put in jail (including children, and including innocent people who were simply arrested, not convicted).

It bars undocumented people from practicing law and invalidates their driver's licenses from other states.

It does lots of other terrible stuff besides this, it's hard to even track.

Make no mistake, this is a Nazi bill. This is a Gestapo bill. This will create a permanent underclass of undocumented people and turn hundreds of thousands of ordinary, compassionate people into felons. It will send a huge number of people into hiding or out of Florida. Florida is now an incubator for home grown fascism.

We're heading towards a very unstable situation because states are moving towards completely incompatible societies.

Even the "nice" employers with good benefits are only nice so long as they think it's advantageous to them. The only ways workers can even approach being guaranteed anything is through well enforced laws, collective bargaining agreements enforced by militant unions, or owning the workplace directly.

It's a magical phrase that lets them spout virulent bigotry that would've been bad in the 50s, without admitting it. That way, just seeing a black person on your screen is woke, a gay person having a job is woke, a trans person asking not to be shut out of society is woke.

They assign it the meaning of "the left thinks racism/sexism/homophobia is the cause of or will solve everything" because they want to actively ignore the oppression that exists, shore up everything that causes is, stop anyone that tries to decrease it, and then actively increase it if given half a chance.

I feel like most of the people defending "guns for self defense" this are speaking based on ideology rather than observed reality.

I say this as someone very conflicted on guns who doesn't want working people disarmed, but also recognizes that having a lot of them is a public health catastrophe.

How many safely stored, locked, and disassembled guns are actually used for the scenarios people are discussing here? How many people got their guns out of their safe, assembled them, loaded them, and then used them to defend themselves from someone who was attempting to cause them bodily harm? I don't think we have the numbers for that, but we absolutely do have the numbers for suicides, gun theft, and loose guns being used to commit crimes, and they're awful.
