if you want a large world + gradual character growth + action game I recommend distorted travesty 3 instead. It always treats the player not like an idiot and doesn't feel like it's wasting their time because each room consists of a meaningful challenge in the context of the area

I actually enjoyed undertale a lot more despite hollow knight being way more in the usual genre of things I enjoy

the world felt too big and empty. A lot of times your rewards for exploring areas were kinda lame. The majority of the rooms are massive and empty with just a few enemies here and there to be in the way, and provide no challenge at all on a micro scale. The small health bar and the way health works means most enemies just all deal the same amount of damage which is kind of lame.

The movement feels nice though, the sword knockback bugged me at first but now I really like it and the dash + dash charm is just fun to use

I feel like people generally overstate the difficulty of AoL's combat, it's hard but it's not that hard. If you're having significant issues with it it's probably a sign you're not spamming the shield spell often enough, that thing is extremely broken. I didn't realize it when I was younger either but it's so inexpensive you can basically just play the entire game with double hp if you want

Using the Spell spell in a random location to make a dungeon rise from the ground comes to mind.

it doesn't reveal a dungeon, it reveals a completely optional (though admittedly extremely useful) item.

I think trying to find the town that takes place in a lot worse of a "you need a guide" thing because there's another item in the town that's actually mandatory

despite being fairly barebones for the genre (especially compared to nowadays) it's still super fun. Letting you skip levelups and save the exp toward levelling something else instead was an amazing design choice and trying to balance the desire to hit later big levels with the worry of gameovering and losing it all is nice.

was randomly listening to my symphogear soundtrack collection yesterday, it made me realize I really like it when the singer gets so caught up in the energy and volume of the song that their singing temporarily breaks down into just screaming. Like, screaming the whole time is not good since then it doesn't seem like a song but those little moments are just so good

On a somewhat related note, I'm starting to feel like I'm repeating OSTs too much. Anyone have suggestions for good game/anime/movie/etc OSTs where:

1) The whole OST, or at least most of it, is really good, out of context of the source material. Not just a few nice tracks in something otherwise mediocre

2) Lots of reprisals, callbacks, reuse of character/event themes, etc. The sort of stuff that makes the OST feel like it's all part of one thing rather than just disconnected songs

To be fair most games those days did that. But youre right that its awful.

pretty sure most games didn't have any sort of saving functionality at all. And basically all the ones I can think of that did, didn't have this issue, either through providing an easy way to restore to full health (fairy fountains in zelda) or just starting you with full (megaman)

peopl calling super metroid perfect are overstating things a little I think. there's a few questionable pieces of level design and the majority of the item pickups in the game (missile tanks) start feeling very useless after around 50 ish. it's still super fun though and one of the best in its genre

cookie the school days anime is good in the sense that watching an insane trainwreck is good. Not a trainwreck of a show but like, a trainwreck of a relationship within the show

The VN might be good or it might not but I never got very far since it has the worst system/interface/whatever. I've heard it's more of a normal romance story and not as crazy as the anime though (except in a few routes, like 3 out of 15 ish) which makes it sound not great to me

Heaven's feel movie was pretty good

They really played up the romance between shirou and sakura, there was even a 10ish minute anime-original flashback at the start just for developing their relationship a little more. A good change too I think because it'll make some scenes later a lot better.

It skimmed a lot of the filler out of the opening days which was nice. I'd probably say it was better than the equivalent sections of the vn it covered. Curious how the other two will do because there are a lot of very important internal monologues later in the route and those don't adapt well to anime generally. I also think heaven's feel has quite a few very strong bad ends which they probably can't show either

as you can see I haven't played too much that fits these restrictions. Even without the SQ/E rule I'm pretty sure all I could add is chrono trigger. I also don't feel like DRPGs (the two dungeon travelers games) are that much like a traditional jrpg but you did say turn based combat and menus, which they have.

I do like pokemon but not as much as this list might suggest, it's more just a lack of other things to put in the spaces. I should get around to playing dragon quarter so I can have a full 10

it's an intense action platformer that takes heavy inspiration from a variety of retro games while improving on their faults. It's also free so you have no excuse not to try it. It's also like 70 hours long lol

I'm not really that hyped for pop team epic ep2, I was pretty disappointed by ep1. Made me realize that as hilarious as I've found most of the comics I've seen of it, those are the ones that other people like and bother to save + repost. Protects me from having to dig through all the sludge looking for good ones which (based on this ep) seem to be few and far between

I imagine you stumbled on the "Longest video game scripts" webpage? That page is interesting, but it's so ridiculously out of date that the answer arc still doesn't have an English word count, so I had to come up with an approximate number based on the available information. I would say the whole story is 1.6 to 1.8 times the Harry Potter series.

I always used TLwiki's script sizes for these sorts of comparisons, because it talks about the scripts in terms of MB instead of in terms of words or lines, which is more accurate. It catches the character nametags sometiems though so it's still not perfect

according to that, umineko is 2.75 and 2.55 for question and answer arc respectively. Higurashi is 2.17 and 3.24, which makes it a little longer. f/sn, which I think is the longest translated VN, is 3.85, which means it's longer than any of those but doesn't really compare when you combine the two arcs together

I plan to watch at least some of it. OoT runs are always exciting to me until I have no idea what's going on with all the glitches.

they'll have commentary to explain all the weird stuff

there's also an OoT glitch exhibition (maybe? depends if they reach the donation amount but they always have in the past) which I highly recommend watching, it's showing off some of the wackiest looking glitches in the game that generally have no value in a speedrun or really any value at all beyond just being extremely weird

not watching anything yet, probably going to watch the new cardcaptor sakura once there's a bit of an episode buffer built up. only thing I'm currently watching is that mmo recovery whatever whatever show from last season but that's a few episodes a week with some friends. Seems like cute clumsy romance which is nice I guess, been a while since I watched one of those

true remembrance, narcissu, katawa shoujo probably the only 3 good free ones I know

first two are fairly short (like, 2-3 hours?) and are somewhat gloomy/sad. narcissu is a lot more gloomy though. katawa shoujo is a fair bit longer and has actual heroine routes and a more normal sort of highschool romance storyline
