It's Such a Beautiful Day - 9/10

I've been a pretty big Don Hertzfeldt fan for almost 20 years, since the days of rewatching Rejected over and over on our high school computers, so I was certainly fine with giving this another watch. I can't quite give it a 10 (his short Meaning of Life would certainly get one - it's perfect), but the innovative blend of animation and live action effects make for a memorable experience. To make almost a feature-length film, making films the way he does, must've taken an unbelievable amount of time.

Some might find the story too depressing or existentially intense, but it touched on several difficult fears and feelings I'd been having, so I find it therapeutic in that way. I think most people could relate to Bill on some level.

Ultimately it's not quite as funny as Rejected, or as powerful as Meaning of Life, but as a 3-part miniseries that has to sustain a fully fleshed-out narrative, it's pretty great, and one of my favorite full-length animated films (I guess it barely qualifies).

La La Land is one of my favorites, would pretty much always watch it again. It's been a while for A Knight's Tale so it'd be interesting to revisit that, I liked it at the time. Count of Monte Cristo I've seen a couple times and is solid. Haven't seen Big Fish or Before Sunrise.

Melancholia - 9/10

The opening sequence is striking. Depression or a similar mental illness can certainly feel apocalyptic at times, so I like the metaphor, and cosmic sci-fi is just a cool backdrop for the main story.

Justine's wedding is nightmarish, not just because it's painfully awkward, but also from the passage of time and everyone's behavior seeming slightly off. Everything that can go wrong between Justine and those close to her does, and one could imagine having this kind of irrational fear before a big life event like this.

Overall it captures feelings of sadness and despondency very well, while making our personal troubles seem insignificant, because after all, a giant death planet could come along and smash us up any day now.

Somewhat easy to pick my favorite 15, but difficult to sort them. Few musicals have such ample quality and quantity of songs.

1. Your Obedient Servant - This track has incredible replay value in my opinion. I love the style whiplash, between the dignified strings & harpsichord that are more of that era (to match the almost comedically formal way Burr and Hamilton signed their letters to each other in real life) and the dark hip-hop beat that plays as they really start digging into each other.
2. Hurricane - Captures the "me vs the world" mindset of Hamilton from the opening chord
3. You'll Be Back - Stupidly catchy
4. One Last Time - A powerful and bittersweet sendoff
5. Blow Us All Away - Love the foreshadowing here as the song calls back frequently to 'Ten Duel Commandments', and the piano dissonance that further hints something bad's about to go down
6. Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down) - Major chills once they got to this one in the live show. An huge exclamation point to cap off the war section.
7. Right Hand Man - The first of many great war raps in Act 1
8. Wait for It - This here number is the one that won Leslie the Tony
9. The Election of 1800 - Essentially a reprise of "Washington On Your Side", but with more impact on the story as it brings the Burr/Hamilton rivalry to a head. The ensemble also really shines.
10. Washington On Your Side - Daveed again spitting mad fire, over a beat that's more in the pocket than the frantic Act 1 raps
11. Ten Duel Commandments
12. Guns and Ships
13. Non-Stop
14. The Room Where It Happens
