You were overcharged on that fact alone.

yeah, you got hosed.
Well I guess its a good thing I couldnt afford the amount they gave me so I couldnt have paid it even if I wanted to. Any idea how much something like that typically costs?

Edit: So basically Ill have a couple mechanics look at it and assume they can do it for much cheaper?

Thanks. Ive been fortunate enough to never have to deal with serious car issues before and so I took it to the dealership with the assumption that it might be covered by warranty but clearly that was not the case.

Or at least was given a higher than normal estimate. I took my car in to my local dealership to see why my engine was taking longer than normal to start up. They determined the wires connecting the engine harness to the cam shaft sensor had been chewed on by rodents and needs to be replaced. They gave me an estimate of over $5,000 for a new engine harness which even with added cost of labor seems way more expensive than it should be. Like I dont know a whole lot about cars but that seems more like the price of an entire new engine rather than a part of it. Should I take it to a local mechanic and get a second opinion to make sure Im not being overcharged? I also want to make sure Im getting it done right but not if it means paying way more than it should be.

A lot definitely depends on what you were hired for. For example, if you were hired for specific days for like a 12-8 shift because thats the position that needed to be filled, you cant just heel-turn and be like oh lol btw, my availability changed and now I can only work different days with the 8-4 shift. A former coworker did that and it caused a lot of unnecessary distress.
Yeah I was hired specifically for 3-11pm shift for hotel front desk, which is a position and industry that can change on a regular basis. I saw other peoples needs at my hotel were being accommodated if they worked multiple jobs or needed certain days to stay home with their kids or something like that, so I simply felt like it was my turn to ask for my needed days off. Thankfully it paid off.

Well in case anyone cares, I had the talk I needed with my manager and was able to get Saturday/Sunday off for the time being, which was the best they were able to do at the moment, with the assurance that Id get Friday/Saturday as soon as theyre able to hire one more person to help out on weekends. So a bit of a compromise but overall Id say the conversation definitely went in my favor.

I used to have a full-time job in a warehouse. I rarely asked for time off, so when I did, it was for very important reasons.

If I ever got any push back, my response was always "Just so you know, if you schedule me Friday night, I WILL NOT BE THERE. So you have two choices: schedule me on Friday night and be a person short, or accommodate my request and make your life easier."
The thing is Im already trying to make everyones life easier by asking for these set days off, because they will have to only schedule people they know are able to work, and this way theyll know which days Ill be coming to work rather than having to request time off on a regular basis. So while yes Im mostly thinking about my own needs, I think it also benefits everyone to know when Im willing and unwilling to come in to work.

I work in a hotel so in a 24/7 environment like that they do definitely like people to have open availability. However a few people, including the new person they just hired, have a second job and can only work certain days, and it seems like their schedule is accommodated to fit their needs. So if I simply say Im not available those days I feel they have no reason to not do the same for me.

You should stand up for yourself and be direct but also make sure you have a couple firm contingency plans in case things fall through and they decide to push you around or gaslight you. And sadly yeah, quitting may have to be an option for you to get what you want elsewhere *shrug*, just be smart about it by not dying on that hill without any plan.
Thank you for your input. Like at first I was kinda thinking worst case scenario and worried about possibly being fired for going that route. But I dont think I should have to worry about that because Im honestly one of the most reliable people they have and dont think they would want to lose me. But also I feel like I have a case to be made that I was told one thing and my manager went back on their word. So clearly nothing will change unless I actually say something.

In order to get the schedule you want? Kinda a long read but basically I told my manager nearly 2 months ago that I would like different days off going forward (Friday/Saturday) because I have things coming up in the spring/summer time that I want to plan for on those days without needing to request a bunch of time off. I have waited patiently, thinking I was handling things the correct and respectful way. But here we are and not only have I still not gotten the days off that I want but my schedule has kinda been all over the place due to staffing issues.

Ive asked about it a few times since then, and was more or less assured that once they hire a few more people and were fully staffed again I would likely get my requested days off. Well recently one new person was hired for part time and somehow they already have the days off that I asked for because they apparently said in their interview they couldnt work those days. Up until now Ive basically had open availability and put up with whatever days they schedule me to show them that Im reliable, but now Im starting to feel like Im being ignored and taken advantage of.

At this point Im getting tired of doing things the right way and considering just straight up telling them Im not available those days and they can not schedule me if Ive already told them Im unavailable. Should I be worried about any consequences by doing this or am I right to stand up for myself? Like I dont want to come off to my employer as disrespectful or demanding but at the same time I feel that Ive waited long enough for them to make this change, that the respect and loyalty Ive given them should go both ways, and giving someone else the days I asked for hardly seems fair. I also dont want to threaten to quit to try to get my way because I feel that could backfire. Whats the best way to handle this? Thank you in advance to anyone willing to offer their opinion.

this is what people say who have never owned a gaming PC in their life.
Actually I say that as someone who built my own PC a good 6-7 years ago. Since then I upgraded to a better GPU and more RAM a couple years back, which were pretty easy upgrades but I know that sooner rather than later my 7 year old CPU will likely struggle to keep up with some newer games. My motherboard is also apparently outdated and not compatible with most newer stuff so if I wanted to buy a new CPU I would likely have to buy a new motherboard too, which at that point basically means having to build a new PC all over again. Even taking money out of the equation, I simply dont have the time or patience to go through that again. I guess if youre a hardcore PC gamer and treat it as a hobby then that whole process could be seen as fun and exciting. But for a casual PC gamer who appreciates the console like simplicity of devices like the Steam Deck, that stuff feels more like work than anything else.

Ive thought about the same thing, but well probably just get Steam Deck 2 by that point. As long as I can play everything I want right now thats good enough for me. The idea of spending a bunch of money to future-proof my PC always seemed silly to me. Ill worry about the future in the future and focus on being fine with what I have currently.

Like the benefits you get with it compared to console gaming is great until you feel like you need to upgrade things and figure out what stuff works with other stuff. Just seems like a big pain in the ass to have to attempt to rebuild something you already built.

I think this is why I love the Steam Deck so much because it eliminates all of that and is basically PC gaming made easy for someone who is used to being a console player.

Nothing wrong with that. Tbh Ive always kept to myself for the most part and have never really considered myself to be a social person. A while back I probably would have agreed with that but I think there are different stages to it. Like as recent as 6 months ago I was still telling myself I wouldnt be able to be happy again but looking back I realize how silly it was to have that mindset. Sure there may always be a part of me that would like to experience again the feeling of sharing my life with someone, but at the same time Im in no rush to have that again because quite honestly its exhausting to even think about trying to start over from scratch. Furthermore I feel theres a certain level of comfort and freedom in getting to a point where you realize you dont need to be with someone to have a good life. Almost as if a large weight has been lifted off your shoulders.

Also Im going to my first Wrestlemania coming up in April which Im super pumped for. Around this time last year I went through a pretty bad breakup with my then girlfriend of almost 4 years. Since then I believe Ive gone through all of the normal stages: denial, anger, self pity, depression, etc. honestly I was in a dark place for a while and wasnt sure if Id ever get over it. But I think Im finally at a point now where Im feeling acceptance. Like as much as Ive struggled to get through it, I realize now that I dont need to depend on someone else to be happy. All I need to do is focus on myself, do the things I enjoy, live my life one day at a time and see what the future holds. It honestly feels liberating to come to peace with being on your own and know that everything will be okay.

This past weekend I started feeling really crappy and gradually got a lot worse. By Saturday night/early Sunday morning I had a bad fever and was experiencing non stop chills for hours. It was probably the most sick Ive ever felt in my life. In my mind it was just a flu rather than Covid because Ive had all of my shots and didnt think catching it would effect me so badly. Luckily those really bad effects didnt last too long and I only had to miss a couple days of work. Throughout the rest of this week Ive still had some lingering effects like a stuffy nose and sore throat, as well as loss of appetite but otherwise Ive been able to function normally and assumed the worst of it was over.

Until today I now realize I cant smell anything. Tried blowing my nose multiple times, thinking it was just plugged up still but no matter how hard I try I cant smell anything I put in front of me. So now Im convinced that it was Covid all long; my work never told me I had to get tested so I didnt bother, now I kinda wish I did just to be sure but I feel like its out of my system at this point. Now Im really worried about how long this loss of smell will last because Im already noticing food/drinks not tasting as good and now it seems likely that my loss of appetite is linked to this. Guess Im just going to have to keep living my life without knowing if/when my sense of smell will return =(
