I think there's a massive difference between being outmatched or losing a game normally and just not being able to play your cards. I can still have fun playing the game and losing when piloting my deck with the former, but if your opponent flips any two of those cards you essentially can't do anything unless you have mass removal. Even then, most of the Eldlich decks I see in Plat run multiple copies of most of those cards, so it's not like 1 Duster is GG.

Triple Skill Drain, There Can Be Only One, Gozen Match, Rivalry of Warlords, Vanity's Emptiness, and Imperial Order don't seem that fair to me. Unless the point of the game is to not be able to play the game.

Mermail is cool. I never got to play against them when they were at full power because the timing of one of my breaks from the game meant I missed them being great and only saw them being still pretty good.

Up to a 5 game win streak in Plat 1 with Heroes. Definitely misplaying a whole lot still but it's extremely cool to drop a literal Destiny Hero - Plasma on your opponent and see them have zero outs to it.

This is bringing back all the nostalgia for me. I went through waves of playing Yugioh as a kid/teen, but my first real heyday was as a 12-14 year old from '06-'08 (not including back in the early 00s when I was very young and played with the OG starter decks), and I remember spending all of my allowance and birthday money on Duelist Pack Aster Pheonix (and Jesse Anderson) in order to try to build a D-Hero deck to replace my E-Hero deck, because they seemed so much cooler.

This was just barely pre-DaD when they weren't really all that good, and those Duelist Packs also were awful and I never pulled a single Malicious or Destiny Draw from them.

Yeah, IDS. You need to pull from 3 different secret packs and it's also full of URs in the extra deck and hand traps.

I don't know why I decided to make two of the most expensive decks in the game.

It's actually 17 URs, not including the playsets of Maxx C, Ash, and Droplet, which I already had. So 26 total URs.

I spent about 11k gems, and got 15 of those 17 URs, either through opening them or dismantling. I'm actually still missing a 3rd copy of Faris and A Hero Lives, but I don't want to dismantle any good URs or spend more than the $50 I put into the game already, so they'll have to wait until more gems come in.

I do now have 750 SR crafting points, and that was only with dismantling extra copies and cards that will never see any play in any half-decent deck.

Trying to learn how to play this Hero deck and it is way more complex than IDS, Zoo, and Tri-Brigade were.

If the Synchro event is anything like the Xyz one, you won't need to build a deck at all to quickly get all of the good rewards.

Well I had to spend a little bit of real cash, but I managed to actually complete the Hero deck with all 45 (it feels like) of the URs needed.

I now have no gems though!

Yeah I'm looking at it now and I'll need to pull from 3 different secret packs. I think I might be able to do it? Having all the staples already makes crafting any deck slightly easier.

I also had to pull from 3 secret packs for IDS which was not fun.

Tri-Brigade is definitely way less cancerous than Eldlich! It feels like the least oppressive of the top decks.

If you're into fusion monsters and don't have an intense hatred of Shaddolls, Invoked Dogmatika Shaddoll is both a good deck and not too good that everyone hates it. It's also not too difficult to learn. I've also been having fun with pure Zoodiac, but that deck is more one note. It's essentially, "Get out Zeus and play 20 hand traps to stop your opponent from doing anything".

I might spend my new gems on a Hero deck. By all accounts it looks like a solid deck, and I have a lot of nostalgia for them. I think it might be expensive with all the extra deck stuff though.

Tagging the people who participated in the last tournament who may or may not be interested in this one.

I just finally got my first actual high school teaching job in September in Ontario, Canada (a great place to be a teacher), and I absolutely do not envy what American teachers have to go through in terms of stress, curriculum content being cut, and shitty wages.

I'd add Nibiru in there in the list of must-haves as well. I finally got around to crafting them after thinking that they weren't as important, and I'm immediately winning a whole lot more games, especially when going second.

No better time to craft 1-3 SRs for a deck than after an event that gives us all 6000 gems.

I don't know if it's because I'm in platinum or not, but I've almost exclusively come across real decks in the event, which you hate to see.

I forgot about the quests, you're right.

I've been min/maxing the quests for a little while now so I totally forgot that surrenders impact them.

I feel like the penalty is so small that it doesn't really mean anything. Maybe in an event like the one we currently have, sure, but usually a loss doesn't even get you 1000 points to get a 'reward' of a Legacy Ticket or two, which is awful anyway.

You get a tiny uptick in your battle pass with a loss, but in comparison to the amount of time you have to get to the max level, it doesn't even really factor into it. I think I finished the battle pass with something like 60 days to go on it, and that was playing a few games every day.

At this point I just surrender all the time if things aren't going well and face zero consequences for it.

Yes, if you don't touch a button for something like 30 seconds, you surrender.

Looks like both Drytron and Eldlich are banned from the event, which is where most of the worry was going to be, so that's good.

How many gems did you spend? Also what were your 3 SRs? I think I would have gone with 2 Whirlwind, 1 Gale off the top of my head.

I was debating that as well but ended up going 3 Whirlwind because Breeze functions very similarly to Gale for extra deck purposes when added to the hand.

Only issue with that was me realizing midway through my duels with Reg that I had no actual way to activate Breeze's effect without Whirlwind.

Either is fine with me as well. If I was voting I'd pick the SRs option, but that's only because I already spent the gems on them.

So we had two fairly close games of Monarch vs. Blackwings with no SRs. Game one had us both in topdeck mode for awhile there. Finished 1-1.

I was definitely missing the SR Black Whirlwinds, but overall I don't think Blackwings are TOO overpowered in the format, which is a good thing because I was worried they'd kind of just run over everything.

I can play now if you'd like. Are we doing with or without 3 SRs

I can play a few games at 9:30, otherwise we can check it out tomorrow.

I'm generally sleeping by then during the week to be up for work, but I can work with that on Thursday night since I have Friday off.

I've made a Blackwing deck if anyone wants to get some practice in later today.

Alright I'm going to attempt to make a deck with 3 SRs and an extra deck now. I'll probably go Blackwings just because of my history with them. I'm sure Mike and I will end up with similar decks, but that's cool.

Yeah any 2 seem fine. I think I'd also pick archetype + rarity limit.

I guess if we're limiting rarities the extra deck wouldn't be too overpowered. I am worried that it would immediately powercreep a bunch of older archetypes though.

Just to be clear, we're at no extra deck with the archetypes, right?

I'd be fine with saying no to Lightning Storm and ROTA and yes to everything else on the list you just mentioned.

I feel like allowing 'some' SRs is just going to be an impossible line to toe, but perhaps it's needed. I just don't know how you possibly make that determination. Maybe if you were allowed 3 SRs in total? Enough for a playset of one, but nothing more than that.

I did also think about staples and my suggestion would be to allow cards given from the tutorial and starting decks, but probably nothing more than that; I don't want to get into the weeds here. But at least stuff like MST and Raigeki are probably good for most formats, and you get to throw in stuff like Blue-Eyes that you might as well allow.

EDIT: David thought of the same thing for SRs, so it's probably a good idea.

Yeah I think this is perfect. Anything given for free is fair game in terms of rarity, and then 3 SRs in total as the rarity limit.

Yeah I looked at both of the lists. Lightsworn is unplayable, but it would still be rough even with a few SRs since you don't have access to Judgment Dragon.

Blackwings is actually one that is decent with only N/R cards. I looked through a bunch of the others on that example list provided and Blackwings would probably go undefeated in the tourney just because every other archetype relies on at least a few SRs to function.

If we had something like "3 SRs max" I think that'd work, if only because we already have enough staple SRs that you wouldn't necessarily feel the need to craft any if you don't want to.

Shakira was also great for sure. The Weeknd's show was meh but I'm a huge fan of his so I still enjoyed it.

I thought Bruno Mars was solid as well.

That was my childhood injected into my veins, I loved it.

Maybe, but I think forcing people to play with very suboptimal versions of their archetypes is interesting enough to be worth sacrificing a few as genuinely unplayable. The challenge of finding the ones that aren't is an exciting one and I think weakening that rule makes it less exciting.

I feel like playing intentionally awful decks is less fun than just playing something like goat format, for example.

I think we should at least allow a certain number of SRs, otherwise a bunch of archetypes will just end up being unplayable altogether.

You'd probably have to pay everyone here to play Eldlich, so I don't think we need to worry about people skirting the rules in a B8 tournament.
