barnnn 04/23/17 9:35:11 AM #314 | Harvest December? I'm also interested in it, but I still have a few VNs in my backlog. Anyway, my translation of MH is on Baka-Tsuki now. Still getting used to the formatting, so it'll be a while until the whole first volume is posted. Something seems to be bugging me about the web though. Maybe it's the lack of indents. https://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Monster_Hunter |

barnnn 04/21/17 2:03:25 PM #311 | Finally got to start my translation of MH volume 2. I don't know if it's the author changing his writing style or the fight scenes being more chaotic, but it's way harder to translate compared to the first. |

barnnn 04/14/17 5:48:40 AM #297 | Well, I got to play it a bit on a demo unit when I was in Japan last year. The battle system is pretty simple. It's a turn based rock-paper-scissors style, kinda like Fate/Extra (if you've played that) but a bit deeper and way less random. The story gets pretty serious for a kid's anime standards, and I heard that the game version is even more serious right off the bat. |

barnnn 04/13/17 3:04:57 AM #295 | I'm really looking forward to it. Well, I guess I did get spoiled on about half of the story because I watch the anime, but the game does take a slightly different direction so I'll probably be fine. |

Topic | I bought 2 Atelier games for PS3 today. I'm a total newcomer - opinions? |
barnnn 04/10/17 7:42:49 AM #4 | First of all: I played the Vita version of Totori, and I don't really know how much they changed. Haven't gotten far in Ayesha yet, so I won't comment on that. In Totori, it's all about time and resource management. Basically, you run a workshop and have to rank up your adventurer's license by exploring, battling, and crafting items within the time limit of 3 years. You'll also build relationships with other characters by following their quest lines or bringing them into battle, and events will trigger when certain conditions are fulfilled. If you fulfill the adventurer rank condition, you'll be able to move the main plot forward and an ending will trigger at the end of year 6 depending on the main plot's progression and character events you have seen. Totori is a pretty good entry point for the Arland trilogy, since vanilla Rorona (first installment) is pretty unforgiving (so I've heard) and Meruru (third installment) has a good chunk of its focus on the returning characters. |

barnnn 04/09/17 6:05:56 PM #285 | G Rank does get mentioned in volume 3 of Yuuki Rin's series, but it's more or less just rephrasing what Becky said in volume 1. With the novels being a more realistic interpretation of the games, I don't think they really want to dwell on ranks that much. |
Topic | Light Novel General v0.01 "Not as good as Mushoku Tensei" |
barnnn 04/09/17 5:25:42 AM #283 | Welp, finished the samples of the gen 4 novels. Akatsuki no Chikai (Vanilla 4) feels pretty lighthearted compared to the other ones I've sampled. Basically, it's about a trio aiming to be big name hunters. They train under a veteran hunter who is like a big brother figure for the orphans in their village. This village is (to my knowledge) original to the novel, but according to the JP Wiki, the series does cover the game's frenzy virus plot line, so I guess they'll move to one of the in-game towns later on. 6 volumes long for this one. Ten'i Muhou no D (4U) opens with some decent action right off the bat. The MC is knowledgeable about monsters and is a skilled painter. He comes off as a book-smart type, which is a first for the MH novels. According to the synopsis, he's also related to a group of G Rank hunters, and they're apparently the focus of the first volume's plot. This series is only 3 volumes long, and have different titles for each volume similar to the first series. Cross Soul (Gen) also feels pretty lighthearted. The plot follows a newbie who was late for the registration at Bherna, and a skilled hunter who runs a traveling restaurant. Synopsis doesn't say much other than the two deciding to hunt a Great Maccao together. Mizutsune does get featured on the cover and front illustration though, so there's that. Only one volume out so far for this one. |
Topic | Is it better to know Japanese or not know Japanese? |
barnnn 04/08/17 9:48:55 PM #8 | For anime and manga related stuff, it's absolutely better if you know the language. For video games, it depends. If you're playing a game with Japanese audio and English subtitles, the localization changes you notice can get pretty jarring. Especially in games localized by NISA. Then again, you won't have to wait for a localization unless your device is region locked, so I guess it's still good. |

barnnn 04/08/17 7:03:18 PM #281 | Now that's new... I searched around a bit, and apparently it's categorized as a "Nox" Novel (whatever that's supposed to mean), which is aimed at adults and focuses more on sex and violence. http://nox-novels.jp/ |
Topic | Light Novel General v0.01 "Not as good as Mushoku Tensei" |
barnnn 04/07/17 10:44:01 PM #278 | Well, there's the novel version of Flash Hunter, which is based on Tri and a bit of 3U. The manga adaptation apparently covers everything in the novel, judging from the front illustrations. The art style is pretty different though, especially for Raiga and Becksel. Looks worse than the manga overall, but the novel style makes the characters' physical growth over the years more apparent. Opens with Raiga and Keres going to Loc Lac like in the manga, so there's nothing much to say about the story here. Then there's Souten no Akashi, based on P3rd and later 3U. It's a whopping 8 volumes, which is understandable since P3rd is one of the fastest selling games of the series. It's apparently about a newbie who was mistaken for a skilled veteran due to some messed up paperwork. The sample pages only cover his arrival at Yukumo, so I didn't get much out of it. There are also 2 more series based on the second gen, Hayate no Tsubasa (FU) and Shakunetsu no Yaiba (Frontier G). They're considered to be direct sequels to Tamashii, so I didn't look at them yet. |
Topic | Light Novel General v0.01 "Not as good as Mushoku Tensei" |
barnnn 04/06/17 7:25:34 PM #276 | Well... with the series being 24 volumes long, I don't think I'll be able to get started any time soon. I usually read all books in one series in a row because I get hooked easily, so I'll have to wait at least a few months from now. Also, I tested out MH Tamashii wo Tsugumono (based on MH Dos and Freedom 2). It seems like this series focuses on learning the ropes in a more traditional way, since Kut-ku and Velocidrome were featured in the front illustrations, and the plot summary says the MC will be training under a veteran hunter. This veteran hunter also appeared in MH Episode as a one-off character, if I remember correctly. |

barnnn 04/06/17 1:54:42 AM #274 | Huh, maybe I'll pick up that series when I have some more free time. A bit too busy to read anything long right now. I can't even get started with my translation of MH volume 2. What I'm doing now is go through the sample chapters of the other MH novels. Turns out BookLive has samples for every single one of them, so I'm going through them to decide on the next series to import. |

barnnn 04/04/17 8:24:35 PM #271 | I think I read somewhere that the LN does provide better details for the final story arc. I only got as far as volume 5 though, and I remember some of Kushieda's comedy routine being a bit more heavy, but that's pretty much it. |

barnnn 04/04/17 7:56:07 PM #269 | The complete fan translation is still on Baka-Tsuki last time I checked. It used to be licensed in my country, but the publisher went under halfway through and no one picked it up. It's more or less exactly the same as the anime though. |
Topic | Light Novel General v0.01 "Not as good as Mushoku Tensei" |
barnnn 04/04/17 4:07:53 PM #266 | Huh, I haven't read any of those. I've read plenty of novels that focus on the characters' cooking, but they don't really dwell on it for long. Like, Toradora doesn't focus on the food abd cooking process at all even though Ryuji's cooking and eating in general is pretty important. Log Horizon has Nyanta's cooking and the burgers Volume 2, but they last only a few sentences as opposed to the anime where it got one whole episode. |

barnnn 04/03/17 4:45:54 PM #261 | Welp, I found a sample of the LN version. https://booklive.jp/product/index/title_id/315682/vol_no/001 (Press the button under the cart button) Chapter 1 has indeed been changed to Prologue, but the contents are mostly exactly the same. The LN revised a sentence or two and added an illustration, but other that that there's no change. Judging from the chapter names, the fan translation is indeed based on the WN version. |
Topic | Light Novel General v0.01 "Not as good as Mushoku Tensei" |
barnnn 04/03/17 2:04:52 PM #259 | Thanks. I skimmed it, and it seems that the fan translation is pretty much spot-on, except for God not retaining his "Old Man" accent. Much more literal compared to the official release, assuming that the official also uses the WN as base. The paragraph structure in the fan translation is also exactly the same as the WN. |

barnnn 04/03/17 1:20:19 PM #257 | kirbymuncher posted... yeah it was supposed to be a semi-sarcastic guess, it's pretty clear the fan one is not as well done <_< I could see the fan translation being more literal though, except for that Hellsing Abridged (?) reference. Do you have the raw for this? I fell that it's the same case as my translation of MH. I try to be as literal as possible, so the writing style is pretty simple. |
Topic | Light Novel General v0.01 "Not as good as Mushoku Tensei" |
barnnn 04/01/17 4:39:16 PM #252 | Well, I would say that the one on right is the fan translation. The writing style is more simple, and there's that wild "Hai" out of nowhere. And I guess changing Chapter 1 to Prologue wouldn't make sense for an official release. Anyways, I know I'm late but congrats on getting your job TC. |

barnnn 03/23/17 6:48:08 PM #236 | Welp, I got to try out Breath of the Wild today. Didn't get to do much, but I liked what I played. Having an open world game with almost no objective markers is pretty refreshing. Gives an impression of the first Zelda game, minus the way too subtle hints. Shield surfing is really fun to mess around with, and there's tons of disposable shield lying around. The frequency of weapons breaking remind me of that one fight scene from the Korean comic Ares. Doesn't disturb me that much, but I can understand the people who complain about this. Oh, and the chickens. They can be used as a glider. Limited utility, but it's freaking awesome. And with Japan getting a port of the Seiken Densetsu (Mana) trilogy, I'll definitely be getting a Switch down the line. |
