banananor 07/06/17 10:23:46 AM #43 | playing this was one of my favorite gaming experiences didn't "get it" the first time, then picked it up again a year or so later when i had nothing to do. kept my own separate notebook to track things. didn't even start the main quest until i had played a few dozen hours for a while there i think i had the layout of vvardenfell better memorized than the town i lived in --- You did indeed stab me in the back. banananor 07/02/17 11:56:05 PM #99 | KamikazePotato posted... What do you mean by 'hit a wall'? If you're only using one class then the gear you get just from main story quests should be all you need to worry about for a while. i'm an arcanist at level 30, gear level is 21- there's a quest where i have to protect an npc from waves of adds, and i can stand in a circle for a defensive buff. the dps/hps just doesn't seem to line up, the npc is unhealable, and the quest is 30 minimum, 34 'suggested' i could probably git gud (i did get green fire in wow back when it was tough), but it might be more efficient to trek along with the story quests (level requirement for those is 30) and get some exp and gear looking up a guide online, there do seem to be some tricks- the npc's pet is healable. we SHALL SEE. i am looking forward to unlocking the summoner subclass and being able to do decent dps --- You did indeed stab me in the back. banananor 07/02/17 1:51:48 AM #7 | it's been strange to see the FF series try to evolve into the modern era after some of their core team members left starting with 12, something just hasn't been right. it's like critical organs are missing. i didn't get very far in 15. however, while it felt better than 13 it felt similarly cardboard --- You did indeed stab me in the back. banananor 07/02/17 1:25:57 AM #14 | i research games ahead of time and buy ones that i'm convinced i will enjoy. if i'm not sure, i wait until they're ridiculously cheap being from a developer i trust makes a huge difference i'm generally a /patientgamer. exceptions are when friends peer pressure me into buying something multiplayer, or games that explicitly benefit from the large online playerbase upon launch (mmos and dark souls types) i've been lucky enough to have a friend that shares his ps+ account with me, so i end up playing new games anyway --- You did indeed stab me in the back. banananor 07/02/17 1:10:24 AM #13 | and yeah. i absolutely love long, immersive RPGs, but i always hit that wall it's almost like i truly feel like the character in the game. the hero doesn't love slaying enemies. they just want everything to be okay in the world. enemies are obstacles, not sources of enjoyment well, most heroes. i'm sure kratos and some others love the carnage i think this is the main reason i play games rather than watch playthroughs on youtube. the experience is different when you are viscerally empathizing with the trials of the hero. even witcher 3, which i loved, was tedious for long stretches, but i still felt rewarded at the end long games are a strange hybrid of work, relief and enjoyment --- You did indeed stab me in the back. banananor 07/02/17 1:04:03 AM #180 | sometimes things have to be broken in order to be remade anew, better than before i don't really think this was the case, though. i loved the tempest block, and for some reason in my brain thought tempest came afterwards. this makes me like urza's block less.... everything before mirage felt archaic, mirage felt almost there, tempest was bad ass, and urza was just broken. everything from masques onward felt pretty much acceptable. i think modern could've easily started with invasion or possibly even masques if not for the marketing aspects i'm sure i could be proven wrong, though --- You did indeed stab me in the back. banananor 07/02/17 12:52:10 AM #7 | i've certainly completed more than that, but i don't think i've ever been perfectly happy about it when the story of a game is interesting i don't particularly appreciate the hours and hours of combat getting in the way of said story most recently i think i started hitting the wall about 40 hours into persona 5, but i chugged through and made it to the end in unhealthy fashion. i love them for the concepts and characters, but persona games can be such a slog. i think some square games have been the exception. ff6, ff7, ff10, and chrono trigger were enjoyable from start to finish (mostly because the combat was easy and quick), although i definitely abused the 'speed up' and save state features of an emulator for 6 for others i've teamed up with a sibling or friend to complete. when one loses interest, the other picks it back up but then again, maybe i'm weird. i distinctly remember getting tired of the combat in every game of the mass effect trilogy and just wishing i could skip combat as best i could. it's pretty decent motivation to optimize my character, at least --- You did indeed stab me in the back. banananor 06/30/17 6:10:15 PM #61 | basically, it sounds like both games are good i most recently played warcraft in i want to say march, and the raiding was better than it had ever been before. the only reason i quit was because every single one of my real life friends had moved on and i needed the flexible normal mode allows you to use any number of players between 10 and 30, dropping in and out at any time, and it is just challenging enough to enjoy with people that aren't very good then there's the 'raid finder' snooze mode. i'll probably be trying to hit max in ffxiv, so i'll do my best to provide an honest comparison of the two @azuarc, didn't relize you were being genuine, thanks for explaining --- You did indeed stab me in the back. banananor 06/30/17 2:27:16 PM #48 | and thanks for the answers. it sounds like ffxiv is basically easy old wow, which is pretty good. my brother was saying samurai and black mage were noticably the best dps, so it does really feel like old wow, where things aren't very balanced and stuff is just fun i was always hesitant to raid with real life friends because i knew some of them would be bad, and it would be an awkward situation overall if dps doesn't really matter (but i guess some people are saying it does?) this'll be a perfect casual mmo to play with friends. i'm still holding out for destiny 2 to be honest --- You did indeed stab me in the back. Topic | Seriously, if FFX international was your first foray, how many people rage quit? |
banananor 06/27/17 1:49:35 PM #29 | Well, to try and work with this, I'll tell a related story. My first rpg was ff7. I don't know how old I was, maybe 9. I found the combat super boring, so I fled all random encounters It was all fine until I hit the wall. The wall was after nibelhiem/Vincent's Manson. There was this big dumb guy in the mountains that cast trine and (the first time for an enemy in the game) cure 2. The monster could out heal my best damage output. I think I only had one save file, inside the mountain in a location where I couldn't get back to a town. Basically, I was screwed So I restarted the game and leveled properly. Later on, I still didn't know I could hit select to make the triangle indicators hover over interactive objects such as ladders or doors. I could not for the life of me figure out how to get through the Escher painting room in the temple of the ancients So I saved up my money for the official strategy guide, which just said "go out the other side of the room". This was the last time I bought a strategy guide. So I convinced my parents to let me use the internet, and I searched for ff7 help. This is how I discovered gamefaqs. This is the long way of saying in this actual situation I would either 1) restart the entire game if I thought I screwed myself or 2) discover the internet and figure out what I was doing wrong There are games that I have simply put down because they were too difficult, grindy, or simply inscrutable.
