5-star makes sense when you're rating things for your own purpose, but in aggregate (thousands of voters) it was useless.

People would look and see if the average rating for the video was higher or lower than their ranking, then give it a 1 or 5 based on that

I used to think I enjoyed spice, but later realized I was doing it to prove to myself that I was awesome/manly/whatever.

Nowadays, I like the flavor associated with spice, but you can get that with pretty mild ones. Tasting extremely spicy things in tiny doses is good, but I wouldn't cover a whole meal with it.

See, it's handled through the interface in a much cleaner way, feels more like a gameplay decision rather than a frustrating game of tetris.

You're not expected to carry around a bunch of random items, so it's not a big deal. I'm thinking more about games where you're supposed to collect & sell treasure, collect crafting materials, potions, etc.

This is probably in the top 5 of things that annoy me in video games.

They make sense in online games where there are actual technical limitations of scale, but it still makes me unhappy.

They make sense in games where you're "supposed" to choose between the sniper rifle and the machine gun, but I still think it adds more frustration than fun, and there's a better way to handle it in the interface.

Middle one would be the one ocarina link returns after defeating ganondorf.
Right one would be the one where ocarina link defeats ganondorf before leaving.

Although I guess it'd be cool for a game to feature people recovering from an apocalypse by working together, etc.

The real answer is probably that, in a post-apocalyptic world, you still need to have conflict. And when all you have is random people with little power, they have to be pretty nasty for there to be a compelling conflict there.

Well, plenty of post-apocalyptic things aren't that dark. You just wouldn't recognize them as post-apocalyptic because they aren't dark and/or full of "barbaric carnal heathens."
