I can't see why people liked it, and I never found it an informative tool. You either like a video or you don't, simple as that.

I don't think ratings on youtube videos really has an effect on what I watch there.

I felt like seeing a rating on my videos mattered more than likes or dislikes. It just feels like Facebook now.

Like/dislike is far better than the 5 star system. The green/red bar is great, and having a list of recently liked videos is very convenient (I guess you could have a list of recent 5 stars... that's kinda weird though).

Didn't really help since everything was 5 star rated. Don't really like the like/dislike thing either because again everything's liked or not. There's no middle ground.

IMO it should be percentaged.

5 = 100%
4 = 60%
3 = 40%
2 = 20%
1 = 0%

Then you display the percentages.

The 5 star system was better if only because there weren't any of the terrible "67 people didn't..." comments

Yeah, but there is a difference between this is an awesome video, this is a good video, an ok video, a bad video, and a terrible video.

5-star makes sense when you're rating things for your own purpose, but in aggregate (thousands of voters) it was useless.

People would look and see if the average rating for the video was higher or lower than their ranking, then give it a 1 or 5 based on that

good video - like
ok video - don't do anything
bad/terrible video - dislike

The fact is that, with the 5 star system, people just did 1s and 5s. You could map all 4s and 5s to like and 1s and 2s to dislike and completely ignore any 3s, and you would have a really close approximation of the 5 star system with just like and dislike. And that's exactly what youtube did to convert the old system to the new one.

That's just needless complication IMO. That would be more appropriate in a professional context that needs some kid of grading system for more serious judging, but since most people just look at videos for fun, getting picky about how "funny" something is just doesn't seem that necessary.

There was no median with 5 star rating systems, not on Youtube or YTMND before it. If you like it, you press 5. If you dislike it, you press 1. That's just how the godawful internet community does things.
