there was really no storyline reason to be there. it gave some interesting backstory to the setting, and maybe the level design was better, but i'm a story progression fiend. i just didn't see why the character would be doing this

So I'm trying to set up a Linode with java servlets/tomcat 6. Why does everything have to be so frustrating?

I have only a vague understanding of how everything is supposed to work. I think I'm supposed to download eclipse (downloading) and compile everything there and just copy junk over using winscp (which I have). Still don't know exactly where to copy it, though. Everything feels so arbitrary... it's an endless cycle of "look up how to do something, mindlessly copy what they say." I just wanna code my java and/or actually understand what I'm doing before I actually do it.

It seems like LAMP has more support... but... Java!

I really don't have anything productive to do or say in this topic, I just need to vent. Oh, and I guess I will be able to host stuff once I get this all running. Any ideas for board-related things?

I was thinking either some kinda game where you manage a group of fantasy characters or a board lottery.

yeah, all i can suggest is to do things that will make you extremely tired during the day. i went through a phase in college where sleeping pills didn't work- lo and behold, i was sitting in my room browsing the internet or playing video games 90% of the time I wasn't in class.

*extended* periods of physical activity or stress are what fixed it for me. make it so your body has no energy and feels heavy when it's time to sleep. going to the gym for 45 minutes isn't really going to cut it. either stay for longer or go walking or whatever. sex does count. there have been a few times when consuming certain substances has thrown my body so out of whack that i'll pass out and fix my own schedule.

waaat? it wasnt hard.. chaff > grenade > chaff > grenade and its pretty much over

Well, of course it's easy once you a) know what to do and b) know how much you have to conserve consumable items.

As to the original topic... I agree. Mgs1 (not twin snakes) was probably the best overall package of the series, not counting 4 (haven't finished it yet). They all have their strengths and weaknesses, though. Even as frustrated as I got with mgs2's storyline or the various corny segways (the pain, snake talking about guns...) and gameplay gaffes (bandage system, map system) in mgs3, I think I'm ready for a replay of the entire series.

Oh also twin snakes is bad. Gameplay is better, and i guess it's funnier, but it's just worse and loses the original effect. I guess it's technically just *different*...

Actual unforgivable list?

Game-crashing bugs
long periods of time between save points in long games (I.e. you are not expected to finish in one sitting)
Possibility of having to restart the entire game due to poor early decisions and lack of saves
Excessively random elements that favor a restart reflex to manipulate the number generator
Excessively long loading times
Huge, obvious grinds mandatory to the main storyline, esp in a single player game.

I can deal with short, gimmicky games- I accept the fact that I can be screwed in roguelikes because each attempt is brisk and i'm not too attached to it.

Oh also regenerating health was the greatest development in shooter gameplay ever at the time. Nothing sucked more than reaching a checkpoint with 3% health and cursing yourself for not offing yourself in the lava first.

Out of curiosity, do you enjoy any of the other series/films much?

Really slow response here, but... it's actually been a while since I've seen a lot of the series. They all have their own special brand of cheesiness. The only one I'm completely in the dark about is deep space nine, which sounds a little different (it has an overarching storyline, or at least appears to).

Short answer... I've seen a lot of the original series and the next generation, a little bit of the scott bakula one and voyager. I've watched a lot of the ones that I liked a lot.

Probably the worst in quality was... the scott bakula one. I'm not sure what exactly was wrong with it, but I think it had something to do with stilted acting/dialogue/scripting. Sometimes it felt like its intended audience was people who were thirty when the original series first aired and sixty when this one was produced.

The Next Generation grew on me. I love the characters, but end up pulling my hair out when episodes would start off okay and then the resolution would end up being a non-sequitur, completely nonsensical or just not believable. And always sooo convenient... I just deleted some potential spoilers and will just kinda let you gather your own impressions.

Voyager has the same issues with not as strong of a crew, but it feels campier (which makes up for it somewhat, gives it a different niche).

It's been a long time since I've seen the original series, but I really enjoyed it. It's dated as all hell, and funny to see the inherent racism/sexism/patriotism/religious standards of the era shine through. It's absolutely cheesy, and each episode's premise was pretty ridiculous, but they would always be resolved in believable and consistent ways. It's hard to explain. There was also pretty good acting sometimes, unless I'm just misremembering.

Original series movies were mixed (some very good), Next Generation movies were all bad.

Anyway, you can tell I've spent enough time watching this stuff with friends and family that it has a special place in my heart and I actually really have to recommend them if you've made it all the way through this post. So I guess it's bad, but lovably bad.

Let me spoil you (not really):

The series never gets good. It's just that you become so used to the characters that you eventually enjoy watching them walk through whatever stupid, nonsensical plot is laid in front of them. And I guess at least the characters are consistently portrayed.

But I was still facepalming in the final season quite a bit. It's an enjoyable series for watching in a group and laughing at or generally commenting on/blogging about (which you're doing), so I think you're all set..

This whole thing would be fixed if we had an automatic runoff system. You pick who your first, second and third choices are. Until someone has the majority, the lowest voted candidate is eliminated. Whoever was voting for that person has their vote automatically transferred for their next choice.

That way people will be able to vote a little bit More about the issues rather than OH GOD I HOPE THAT GUY DOESN'T WIN GOTTA VOTE FOR THE OTHER FATTY

Good luck getting this passed though. Neither party wants it
