I thought I checked Castlevania III, but it's a case where searching GameFAQs database and the overview says 89, but you click for the US release and it says September 1990.

TMNT: Turtles in Time is definitely in the category of "how the hell did I miss that?" Same with Pokemon Snap, especially since I used Pokemon Pinball for the sake of going for a blowout record (granted, it's there to represent the Game Boy Color).

DDR and Phantasy Star IV are more surprising in that they have made contests before, so I must have missed them when I looked at the 2004 bracket.

I'd be interesting in hearing about any snubs for this contest. I really tried to dig deep to get interesting, diverse fodder instead of just milking the SNES, Genesis, N64, and PSX dry. A lot of interesting stuff from the Arcades, the Game Boy, the PC, the Saturn, the first months of the Dreamcast's lfie, and even the NES's final days.

Goldeneye vs. SOTN is actually a rematch from the original games contest in one of the more contested fourpacks of that contest. Goldeneye took that one easily back then, but it looked like this result would probably flip today, and I thought both games were set up nicely for the one division with no real favorite. SMRPG vs. Street Fighter II was also set up in this division as a nod to the past.

Yeah, Vivi and Mario is where the contest really started going off the rails. We knew Draven was going to run wild if he could get past Link, but we thought it would just be contained to his stuff. But once Vivi started taking it to SFFed Mario, it was now plausible that all of the Noble Nine could be in danger of getting upset. It was like they all had targets on their backs.

Simon is an interesting case, because he's been out of the public eye for a long time. He definitely gets respect as a video gaming icon of sorts, but he's so irrelevant that it doesn't translate to any sort of strength. On top of that, his only good picture was his sprite, and we don't see those until later rounds if he's lucky. Who the hell identifies that red headed goober as Simon Belmont?

Still, the guy does have the iconic Belmont name, and Alucard is proof that Castlevania does means something around here, so the guy just needed something to become relevant, and a re-design that conjures of the image of Super Castlevania IV, a game that probably could do half decent in a Games Contest if it could make the cut.

Enter Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and it stands to reason that Simon would have more to gain from Smash than most characters would. Very few characters, save for complete unknowns, could make that gain, but Simon's old school respect is what helped make his boost that much more potent. Also, he was seeded against Hayabusa, a character who also leaned on a re-design, but now lacks the relevancy he had back when he got his makeover.

I took Simon to win the eight pack, and even though he didn't, I feel like it wasn't a bad call in retrospect.

HOWEVER

The one thing that leaves me a tiny bit bitter... Spider-Man would have entered the bracket coming in hot with a GotY-worthy #1 video game on the site, as we've discussed. And he would have (potentially!) left the bracket tonight, in the Grand Finals versus Link, on the day his new movie with a 85 Metacritic, 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and 95% audience score is hitting theaters on its way to a $40 million+ weekend.

What a missed opportunity!

It's past time to open it up to fictional characters for this reason.

We don't need to go insane and have a 95% fictional character bracket, but the occasional Spiderman, Batman, Joker, Geralt, Thanos, or [insert random MvC3 character] after a major release should absolutely be allowed.

Adolf Hitler made it into a contest. It's not like we'll sink any lower.

We have eight divisions in a 128 character contests. I think 8 out of 128 slots going to video game characters originating outside of video games is the ideal way to go. This way we don't waste time with anything but the likes of Batman, Spider-Man, Vader, etc.

Also, Shovel Knight is the one game that did crowdfunding correctly, and did DLC correctly. They are still releasing free DLC campaigns, honoring the milestones set during the Kickstarter.

Pretty much everything Mighty No 9 failed at doing, Shovel Knight got and is still getting done correctly.

The Gauntlet was Ganon vs. Auron, Snake vs. Zelda (we knew back then!), Sora vs. Alucard, Kirby vs. Tidus, and Bowser vs. Ryu.

All of them ended up being disappointing, but then the match that followed ended up being surprising great. That was DK vs. Master Chief.

I never viewed Bowsette as a rally fuel thing or that it would boost Bowser into a Crono beater.

However, I do think it left enough of an impression that it would help him against his contemporaries in his division. No way he was losing to Charizard or Kirby with Bowsette still fresh in everyones mind.

Goldeneye was probably a Top 10 game in 2004, but ran up against Ocarina and got demolished. We would have probably seen it coming if it had been on FFVII's side of the bracket.

Average to above average. The bracket ended up being solid, and the loser's bracket went better than expected considering it should have filled with redundant rematches, but we had more flips or at least twists than I thought were possible. A lot of the setups in the main bracket were genius, in particular Division 1, 3, Geralt's eightpack, and Division 7 were some of the most insane setups we've ever had. Allen took full advantage of the Noble 9 sans Seph not being in the main bracket as far as filling the voids go.

However, lack of communication from Allen (not even a word saying Mario vs. Samus II was legit despite Samus being on track to take the lead in the end?) on several fronts, and a completely bastardized match picture format with some of the all time worst pictures ever seen, and characters being mislabeled (TOAD IS NOT CAPTAIN TOAD, and how does Joker get a maskless picture and almost get billed as Ren Amimaya in a debatable match? The fact that his Smash Bros reveal had no mention of his real name and featured Joker almost entirely in his mask shows how ridiculous that was. This shit is inexcusable.) knock it down a few pegs.

Transformation Duration is the attached skill of the Prince of Sable Primary Spirit (Legend), but I haven't seen it as a Support Spirit yet. Just wanna know what to be on the lookout for.

If you play around in Spirit Board enough to get some good spirits, she's really easy, especially if you use someone who likes flat stages like Little Mac. Really the only issue is overcoming her power level, which can be done with a good number of Legend spirits. I used Cutie J my first time through (have to unlock the Ace-level Jeanne first, who appeared on the spirit board, then level her to 99 to get Cutie J).

Yeah, I wasn't touching the Spirit Board, so I couldn't match her stats.

time limits in this are the worst. Like, it's already one of the hardest fights in the game, why does it need a timer on top of that? At one point I had her at like 10HP only for time to run out

the only reason I ended up beating it is because I got her off the side and jumped off her head accidentally, which stopped her from being able to reach the stage

I cheesed it by throwing her off and spiking her. It took like twenty tries to get it right.

I used Duck Hunt's forward Smash to fend her off the stage until it was just too far for her to get back. Took forever just to do that.

Believe it or not, the two projects happened independent of each other, but when Undertale dropped first, Salvato deliberately avoided playing and any discussion of Undertale because he knew some of the aspects of the game paralleled what he was doing with DDLC.

Peach was basically the same in Odyssey as all the other Mario games, and some goofballs actually disliked the ending because of her decision (c'mon y'all, it wasn't that serious). Zelda got actual backstory and development for once (even if it's simple compared to other games out there).

The more spirits you have, the better arsenal you have to wreck spritis. I don't remember Metal Face, but I'm sure he was metal, so I had Viridi which has Metal Killer, and it wrecks Metal Spirits.

Finally got 9.9 Classic with a bit of trickery.

Used Ganondorf, and he can pretty much Smash attack through his first four fights really easily. The hard part is getting through the Pit & Palutena and Link & Zelda duos, but if you wreck all the fights, you can go into the fight with the Hands already at 9.9 and use Tickets if you die during the fight.

Ganon's new sword is both absurdly damaging and has huge hitboxes, so it's really easy to hit both hands with Up Smashes a good amount of times.
