I was told to drop about 50k into stocks all at once and decided to just drop in about 5k instead. I'm so glad I hesitated. I've lost about $500 this week (on about 20k of investments) which is bad, but not horrible I guess.

I'm thinking I just continue dollar cost averaging for now into ETFs. I've been burned on gambling on RCON, SOFI, and GME, so I might take a break from stock picking and just toss money into my M1 pies that mostly have ETFs based on indexes.

@Zachnorn does he have the same number of tokens as he did before the switch from V1 to V2? A quick googling appears that Aerdrop recently had an upgrade, but that during the changeover they essentially did a reverse split of sorts so each individual token is worth significantly more than before, but everyone has less tokens in their wallet after the change to V2.

Some/all of this could be wrong because it's based on 5 minutes of googling and twitter skimming, but there is definitely something odd happening.
Not sure. But he did tell me he made several grand from it.

I took the opportunity to buy more SOFI at $17. I've lost money so far, but I believe in the stock since it seems like some early investors or executives were able to sell it and probably decided to just to avoid having their net worth mostly in one company. I think it will take several weeks and possibly a few months, but I'll see gains on it.

Until it has a major failure or accident that is too expensive to be fixed. Though my strategy is to buy a new car once my car hits 150-200k miles to prepare for such a failure and have two cars for a bit. This worked when my old car got totaled in an accident.

EDIT: So far, my current car only has 71k miles on it. I've had it for 6.5 years. I've barely driven it since the pandemic started since I work from home though. Normally, I'd have 80 or 90k on it by now.

What makes you say that? Isn't the economy supposed to be booming?

The stock market isn't the economy. The stock market has been known to drop after good unemployment numbers come out because more employed people increases inflation.

From what I'm seeing, the market is reacting to increasing inflation and potential interest rate increases, which occur when the economy is improving.

Shorting is definitely not a game I'd want to play. Especially with the anti-shorting sentiment. I can see why the likes of AMC and GME were shorted heavily and why it was seen as such a sure thing; that is, until WSB changed things.

Shorts tend to lose money on average, but the thing about levered ETFs like SQQQ is that there's an additional problem generated by the goal of matching daily percentage returns and the mathematics of multiplying percentages. Like, if QQQ drops 10% today and rises 10% tomorrow, it doesn't get back to even - it'll still be down 1%. But, SQQQ would have fallen 30% the first day and risen 30% the second day - and it's still down 9%. Much worse than the 3% you'd expect! Over time, these losses are brutal.

How hedge funds use shorts is typically to increase their leverage. Like, if they have $100, they'll invest $300 long and $200 short. This is 5x leverage, but they'll argue that there are only really exposed 100% on the long side because the shorts act to hedge the longs. Of course the hedges don't always work because they aren't in the actual same stocks - they might, say, buy Ford and short GM. In January this strategy blew up on a lot of funds when their short stocks mostly soared and their long stocks fell.
Makes sense. But again for SQQQ specifically, isn't the best strategy for using it, if you're really confident that QQQ will fall, is to buy it early (in the premarket, let's say) and then sell it a few hours later? At least, I wouldn't hold SQQQ past a market close, personally.

I don't play with the stock market more than "buy stocks/ETFs low, sell them high, get dividends along the way" but isn't that just how shorting is? You buy SQQQ as a way to short QQQ using an ETF and since stocks go up more than down, you're more likely to lose money with SQQQ just as you would if you shorted QQQ yourself.
