the very design of reddit is meant to filter out trolls. It's not as easy to make alt account since subs regulate karma entrance. The downvotes are there to show how unpopular or stupid your topic is. It has its cons, obviously, but it does a good job at filtering OUT THE TROLLS.

It also does a good job of filtering out discussion, dissent, anything that the masses determine unsavoury. The upvote/downvote system allows a bunch of idiots to drown out a literal expert and make him look like the stupid one.

which rarely happens unless you're posting on some fandom sub maybe. And if you're not happy about it, you can go to another subreddit. Eg. hate the liberals on politics? then go to /r/the_donald then

I've only ever tried to post on Reddit a few times when I thought something really needed to be seen by as many people as possible. Then it would get instantly deleted because I didn't have enough points of whatever to be allowed to post.

I tried posting an officially produced video of the staff of Orange County Corrections in Orlando literally dancing in front of jail cells ("because dancing is funny! And we can have fun, too! While we put people in jail"), but I guess I have to post a handful of fucking cat pictures and pretend my fake girlfriend baked me some Mario cupcakes first.

Awful site, awful mechanics, awful boomer community.

the community is far better than most sites, such as FB, Yahoo and Youtube. I'd say only Quora comes close. The community at reddit is far more globalised as compared to this site full of jerkish Americans only. Might as well call this board 'American Affairs'

United States immigration authorities have detained almost 2,000 children in the past six weeks, which may cause them irreparable harm with lifelong consequences, said Zeid Raad al-Hussein, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights.

He cited an observation by the president of the American Association of Pediatrics that locking the children up separately from their parents constituted government-sanctioned child abuse.

The thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable, Mr. al-Hussein said.

socialism is government intervening in the economy and owning key industries. Pretty much almost all countries on earth are somewhat a socialist country. Or a democratic-socialist country, to be exact. A full democracy and capitalist economy does not exist at all.

Trump implementing tariffs and closing up the borders is called protectionism. His use of tariffs to justify a selfish win-lose scenario is called mercantilism.

That means nothing, especially when a "country full" is just 14%. And if you're not trying to correlate, then the observation is pointless.

This 14% proportion is no different from your USA's african american minority of 12%.

Do blacks look uncommon to you? 15% is already VERY significant. In this proportion, you can pretty much see a black/malay person on the street for every 6 chinese/white persons. And this is esp. so for Singapore, where races are not segragated and dont live separately at all (eg. blacks mostly found in ghettos). Almost all locals live in HDB flats. @Wutobliteration - When people have to fill certain forms in SG, they ask them about their race.

I was amazed at the granularity of the choices provided for race. There were sub-options for say, different indian groups, or chinese groups.

But then other geographic areas had less options. What would a Sicilian check? (they're not exactly white). A portuguese? A Mexican? A native American (e.g. Cherokee)?

All countries have different racial groupings fyi. For instance, in US, you have Hispanics, Asians, Whites and African-Americans. You basically just group races like Chinese under 'Asian'.

Meanwhile in Singapore, same thing. They have Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian and Caucasian. White people are under Caucasian. Doesnt matrer if you're from Europe or America or Russia.

Countries go by their main racial proportions for clasifying.

Question only a local could answer, and I'm quite intrigued.

There is an area called Bugis. It has a couple hotels, and there is a little street market of sorts that pops up sort of across the mall in the Bugis metro stop.

Imagine you're walking from that building towards the little street mart. Look to your left. There is a TALL building. If you go to it, it has an outer garden full of statues, art deco style, like if they were made of metal. If you walk in, the building is BEAUTIFUL (if only a little bit dark and creepy) and it has a real fancy, gatsby-style bar inside, it's amazing.

What is that building?

You might want to check eith the singapore subreddit about that. Ive not exactly been to all parts of Singapore (most torusits just see the central area. Theres also the far west, east and north of the country, largely residential).

But from what i know, it could be a cathedral...

well i wouldnt generalise like that. Lots of liberals liked LKY.
When Lee Kuan Yew died, many world leaders all over the world went to pay respect to him and even travelled all the way to attend the funeral. This including Bill Clinton,John Kelly from the US, Tony Blair, Queen Elizabeth and world organisations from World Bank to UN to IMF to the EU. He was that influential among politicians. Not sure if his death was reported in most foreign media.

He literally transformed a 3rd world country to a 1st world country-- a country without even any land or water of its own and where people lived in communal forested wooden houses and all divided by race, language and religion. Till today singapore is the only 1st world nation in southeast asia where countries like myanmar, phillipines, indonesia, thailand and malaysia still suffer from development and corruption.

I guess that's enough ranting from me already. May seem like I'm boasting about the country too much (ah perhaps i am)

Pretty sure signapore is objectively not the richest country lol and I strongly doubt the claim of being the safest.

I mean a quick look does show it has a pretty high per capita GDP and low crime but it is not #1 in either and obviously overall GPD United States and quite a few others vastly surpass it.

You cant look at GDP alone for sg due to the small size of it.
Obviously the country cant produce at the same wuantity as other larger countries. Look at a 3rd world country like indonesia with a super high GDP. GDP itself is an unreliable economic indicator.

For GDP per capita, SG used to top the charts in the years before for PPP (which is the reliable basis to use to accoung for purchasing power and inflation)

For safety, I i was referring to recent news i read on another study conducted, based on people's perception of their own country.

If you look at the more knowned report by world bank, yeah, SG doesnt rank at no.1 since the study goes stricyly by crime rate which is not actually a good basis given there can be skewing. The japanese police for eg. actually supresses crime info recorded for this sake of looking clean on the outside. They have a freakin yakuza for goodness sake.

Of course no country is perfect. Theres crime here too. Perhaps more of what safety means, is that i can say Singapore has safe natural-wise too. Theres completely zero natural disasters to fear due to the country's shielded location.

The minister, Lee Kuan Yew (once called the smartest ever by Tony Blair) put it a priority to focus on having full racial harmony and a building up of the economy through capital.

yeah this is bullshit. probably he did on his younger year, but in his last few years of his life he devolved into a racist.

Gee, didnt know last few years of LKY's life was in the 1970s. Chinese schools are history. Now its just a matter of tradition. Whether Chinese or Malay schools or normal neighbourhood schools, all teach in english and with the same syllabus.

The only is one the matter of some discrimination is in the army, something even the malays understand since its a sensitive topic of national interest. If SG goes to war with Malaysia, can the Malays dare fight their own race from the other country?

More malays serve their stint in police than in the army from this, and those in army are not allowed in bomber or armored units. It makes sense and malay boys tend not to care anyway since army is the last place any boy would want go to serve national service.

lol, then he is racist since the 70's not just at his last years.
this is definitely racism and you openly proud of it?

Its not significant when no one is even offended by it. Go read this reddit post here for some insight. Really, no one gives a shoot.

And you focusing on just that small aspect is really being narrowminded. There was once racial riots in singapore and thats what LKY feared since. His policies have come a long way. Chinese kids playing with Malay kids in the playground, having them as friends, a muslim mosque near to a church next to a buddhist temple, chinese people living next to indian and malay neighbours...
All these are the norm in Singapore and has been since the 1980s.
TopicAs someone from Singapore, its pretty sad how my country is constantly mistaken.

Thinking it is in/part of Malaysia is understandable understandable seeing as how they are like 5 feet from each other. Anyone who thinks it is in China is downright stupid though.

My gosh, one country is full of Malays, the other country is full of Chinese. Not hard to differentiate.
How the hell can people think Singapore is part of China then also think its part of Malaysia?

But if you look in the world map, yeah, its understandable. Singapore is hardly even on the world map cos its too darn small. The word pasted 'Singapore' is alrdy bigger than the country itself on the map.
