TsunamiXXVIII 07/23/22 5:29:51 PM #48 | GATE OF STEINER Sky Tower The Rain Formerly Known as Purple Rough start to today, but decent end. The two RoR songs were nice. TsunamiXXVIII 07/23/22 2:55:19 AM #73 | Paratroopa1 posted... I would be interested in seeing what world record has the worst direction score, tooI got you. There are a few others with bad direction score but I'm pretty sure this one takes the cake. Furret 4https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/7/9/AARhE1AADe_j.jpg That Furret on the left has simply been lured into the shot for more extra, though it wouldn't at all surprise me if this game is programmed to simply register "Furret" as the target for synergy and is therefore giving a boatload of extra points by having the one that isn't actually part of the interaction get the multiplier. But this is a shot of the interaction of the one in the middle, who is largely facing away, and the one on the right, whose body is still halfway submerged in a hole and therefore can't get very good size at all. The 2283 Size+Direction is, in fact, better than what the other one can do, so taking this shot with under 300 direction (the other ones I thought might contend with it turned out to have directions a tad above 400) is truly the best you can do. --- Also known as Cyberchao X. TsunamiXXVIII 07/18/22 8:02:49 PM #56 | Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke -(PHENYLALANINE) Supper Woods I don't know how we ended up with RftMIS as our traditional Touhou song; it's actually not really that great among Touhou songs. But a mediocre Touhou song is still better than whatever that was. I actually expected it to have a chance to get my vote when I saw "Breath of Fire" because I think of that as an old franchise and I do have a weakness for retro games, but apparently it's had a more recent game after all. I wrote down "-(PHENYLALANINE)-" on my ballot before even listening to the songs because I remember loving it, and the game's soundtrack in general, from previous contests. Mimic did turn out to be a good song too, but not enough to change my mind. The third match was the only one where I was unfamiliar with both songs going in. And it turned out to be probably the best pairing of the three! Maybe. There's kind of a large jumble in the middle for the "ranking all six", except for a clear best and worst. Supper Woods >>>> Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke > -(PHENYLALANINE)- > Mimic > Atolm Dragon >>>>> PowerOne Like I said, "mediocre" is relative. --- Also known as Cyberchao X. TsunamiXXVIII 07/13/22 3:07:29 AM #21 | -[PROTEASE]- Suite Photoconductivity The Grand Finale WHAT IS WITH THIS DAY BEING SO DANG LONG?! I'd probably vote -[PROTEASE] just on principle even if it weren't good, but it's a 13 Sentinels song so of course it's amazing. TsunamiXXVIII 07/06/22 10:31:12 PM #3 | Narwhal Desert Dunes (Desert) Gambit Huh, looks like this time I didn't come back to it. Well, I'll make up for it by voting early today...what is this first match? Did these two songs make it in for the express purpose of going against each other? ...Yeah, I'm going to say they did. Neither belongs here. Like, I'm literally putting them next to each other, with a greater than sign before the former, before even listening to the other four songs because I fully expect them to be #5 and #6. Desert Dunes (Desert) quickly reaffirms this belief by being good. Unwavering Belief has a bit too much "epic" syndrome. It's good, but it's trying too hard. A sports game with original music? Weird. I tend to remember them as mostly having licensed music. And...this isn't good. I had the game in the second match, but I was quite young so I never got very far in it, and now my Sega Genesis doesn't work. I didn't really remember the soundtrack standing out at the time, but this is pretty good! Desert Dunes (Desert) > Gambit > Unwavering Belief > Narwhal > Breaking Pandora > NARWHAL Overall not a great day, but there were some decent tunes. --- Also known as Cyberchao X. TsunamiXXVIII 07/05/22 6:21:39 PM #64 | https://youtu.be/01skyPMeeoc https://youtu.be/owG2_kQC2Go Stage 5 bosses are usually the ones who are supposed to be the "breakout characters" who get to be playable in later games, so why'd they get some of the biggest clunkers of their soundtracks in the beginning of the Windows era? This isn't even debatable, either; Flowering Night has been Sakuya's theme ever since it debuted in PoFV and Youmu literally used her stage theme from PCBover her boss theme in one of the fighting games. --- Also known as Cyberchao X. TsunamiXXVIII 07/03/22 10:26:33 PM #6 | Oh nice, only one song over 4 minutes long! My ADHD loves today's lineup. Healthy Unicorn Girl Wicked Child Tachi Especially good about Battle 2 being under a minute to loop is that I'd all but decided that I wasn't voting for it before even hearing it. Healthy Unicorn Girl is amazing in a way that a SNES song would be hard-pressed to contend against. It was still very good, of course, but as I expected, it was outmatched. Of course, my argument that the early-gen systems wouldn't be able to contend against some of the stuff the modern games can do was quickly undermined by Wicked Child easily outpacing Battle 2...and both of them even more easily outpacing Contrattacco - Emotional Overload, which was just bad. Not good for my ADHD: Battle with the Devil's lengthy intro. Was really tempted to write it off early. It got its act together, but it was still kind of weak. Neotokyo, on the other hand, is still as strong a soundtrack as ever. TsunamiXXVIII 07/02/22 11:42:54 PM #10 | Crocus GEOMETRIC DANCE (Long Ver.) Renata Glasc, the Chem-Baroness I started listening to Crocus and was like "this is beautiful; please let Limitless Cinderella just suck so I don't have to listen to the full 6 minutes". Because I'm ADHD and get impatient quickly. No such luck; Limitless Cinderella is really good. So I listened to that all the way through and then went back to Crocus and again wondered why I doubted my initial instinct. Up third is we've got to believe in something, which is painfully generic RPG music. GEOMETRIC DANCE (Long Version) is far from a masterpiece, but it's more than good enough here, and enjoyable enough that I listened to it all the way through even though I'd made my decision very quickly. Help me I'm scared. Both of these pieces instantly made me want to vote against them. Luckily, liberatedliberator at least doesn't stay bad for long. Unfortunately, neither did Renata Glasc, leaving me back at an impasse. Crocus >>>>>>>> Limitless Cinderella > GEOMETRIC DANCE >>>>> we have to believe in something >>> Renata Glasc, the Chem-Baroness > liberatedliberator I hate when it shakes out like that, voting for #1, #3, and #5. But damn, Crocus is amazing. --- Also known as Cyberchao X. Now let us all sing the praises of azuarc, Guru champion. |

Topic | Best new franchise of the 2010s |
TsunamiXXVIII 05/21/22 11:37:10 PM #1 | This isn't a contest, just a discussion. Because here's the funny thing...franchise-making is pretty much dead. If you look at the list of games in our Game of the Decade contest for the 2010s, do you know how many of them are actually both "the first game in a franchise consisting of at least two games" and "released in 2010 or later in all regions"? One, and it only got a 14-seed. Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. (Bayonetta was released in 2009 in Japan, but just narrowly counted as a 2010 game by NA release date, which is what was used). There were a couple of games that made the bracket that were the second game in a franchise where the first game would've also been eligible, namely VLR and Splatoon 2... although just like Bayonetta, 999 is a 2009 game by Japanese release date. Dark Souls is not the first game in its franchise. Demon's Souls legitimately made the first GotD. It's all about indie games these days, and established franchises. Though there is, of course, one indie game that became a franchise, and did so with remarkable speed. Five Nights at Freddy's was just under a year old when Five Nights at Freddy's 4 was released, an incredible release schedule, and even more impressively, it turned into a multimedia franchise. --- Also known as Cyberchao X.
