So I dont 100% disagree with the idea that sometimes consequences for actions are too severe, and ought to be mitigated if possible. That in and of itself is a reasonable position. We all love a good fuck around and find out story but even I can admit that if there was a way to teach, for example, Covid deniers that they were wrong, without having them slowly suffocate alone in a hospital room while their loved ones watch through an iPad, that would be a good thing.

In a sense thats what elective abortion ispregnancy is a potential consequence for having sex, that is too severe, and abortion somewhat lessens that consequence. (As an aside, pro-life people 100% understand this and thats the reason they are against abortion in the first place. They think its letting women who have sexual agency, which they want to punish, off the hook too easily.)

Now, as far as speech goes, I do think that there is a culture of policing within online spaces, particularly left-leaning ones, that is sometimes toxic. There are, for example, several accounts on tiktok Im aware of whose entire modus operandi is finding people who say shitty things online, internet sleuthing to track them down in real life, and get them fired from their job. These accounts have millions of followers who they utilize to flood employers with messages about shit their employees did, and that to me feels gross; not necessarily because I feel bad for the people losing their jobsthey are usually, for example, extremely racist or homophobic, or anti-vax healthcare workers, etc. who shouldnt be working in their current position because they could pose a genuine danger to their patientsbut because its creating these giant systems of surveillance in online spaces, which can (and have been) quickly turned against marginalized people over personal or petty issues. Its also taking systemic issues and trying to individualize the solution, which is a whole different problem in and of itself (you cant solve racism in the medical industry just by getting nurses who used the n-word on Twitter ten years ago fired, even if they do deserve to be fired and even if it does feel personally gratifying to do so). It leads to mobs of people feeling like they are doing something good while not structurally changing anything.

All that said, if you arent being made into the Main Character of Twitter for that day, and the backlash you face for your free speech is just several people you know telling you to shut the fuck up, I dont really think you are facing unjustified or too heavy consequences.

Posts like the above are a massive breath of fresh air on this board. I don't entirely agree although I agree with the majority of what was said above.

I would generally say that a more forgiving culture that focuses more on education than punitive action would be a more healthy culture to have.

The problem is that there is still a legitimate free speech discussion to be had despite that, but now anytime the term "free speech" gets said it is nothing, but negative connotations.

It seems like people are generally more pro censorship than they've ever been and IDK why people are so willing to accept what a big social media platform determines to be acceptable or not.

This is referring to the concept of free speech as opposed to the first amendment.

And it seems that nowadays anytime someone says "freedom of speech" it's getting interpreted as a dog whistle for saying racist stuff without consequences.

Pretty vague for a starting discussion point.

The saying goes "your right to wildly swing your fist ends at my face" or something to that effect. Meaning, as long as you aren't harming anyone then you're good.

There's a lot of grey area in this though especially when speech is involved. Like violence would definitely not be allowable, but then you have self defense laws which creates more grey area and room for interpretation. So even when something seems more simple, like violence, there are still layers to interpreting it.

So no one has any real point to these topics? They realize that if you described what these topics are then you'd have to admit they're just troll topics that shouldn't be allowed?

Has there ever been anything productive to come from one of these topics?

Am I supposed to care about this story?

That's because what you want to talk about and keep trying to force everyone else into a discussion about has been done to death, is just as productive as these topics themselves, and will never change anything. Weed legalization is one of the only bipartisan political positions this country has with around 70% of the country give or take in favor of full legalization.

Get these people out of our horrible prison system and help them find employment and housing.

The only way you could possibly "defend" Biden on this (or any president ever) is that he is waiting to use it as a political card to maximize it's potential value to him. I kind of have a hard time looking at Biden and seeing him as anyone who looks at much beyond his own political career. Granted, that doesn't exactly make him any different than the vast majority of politicians.
