a new brunch place opened in Omaha. their entire menu can be"veganized". honestly wasn't too bad for the price

limited garden space and idk just didn't think of them. maybe next year.

How often did you pick it? If it stays on the plant too long, it gets awful. The first time I grew it, it grew too slowly and I thought I would wait until it got bigger to harvest but it was way too astringent. I started harvesting more frequently and even though it was a smaller yield, the flavor was much better.

You might also be growing the wrong kind for your climate.

Thanks. A Google search also says kale has a defense mechanism where it turns bitter when you snap it. So I'm also trying to cut the leaves with scissors instead

This might be a long shot but has anyone here ever tried to grow their own kale?

Tried growing my own this year but it came out bitter. Google said wash it or cook it but it didn't help.

Easy homemade donuts. You take a can of biscuits (some are vegan some aren't so check the label), you poke holes in the middle, and you deep fry them in a Wok for about 3 minutes on both sides.

i didn't even know wawa had a veggie sandwich

i stopped bothering checking gas stations for vegan food offerings because the quick-serve options are always full of meat and dairy. i just get corn nuts or plain fritos / chips and be on my way

I made a vegan mac and cheese for lunch (usually my go to meal when I don't have any other ideas of what to make). then for dinner I was going to make tostadas, but ended up being great northern beans and kale on top of a tortilla when I realized I didn't have any ingredients to make actual tostadas

That sounds interesting

I was impressed by the flavor and visual on the first try, though I overcooked it slightly. The recipe I used said 7-9 minutes at 400
I had it in the oven for about 9 minutes and 45 seconds total and it still tasted burnt

I definitely get the hype behind rice paper bacon

The problem is that none of the fast food places have dedicated spaces for vegan stuff so none of it is really vegan ( -_-)

That's the nature of the beast. Restaurants tend to have very cramped and tiny kitchen areas and are an extremely rushed and frantic environment. even if you order a vegan meal there's likely to be meat juices flying everywhere, a shared fryer with meat products, a line cook touching meat with the same hands they touched your food with, etc. Even if you're in a grocery store probably meat wrapped in thin plastic touched the bottom of your shopping cart where you're putting your produce. The person checking out your groceries isn't going to wash hands between touching a meat product and touching your stuff. Nobody has time for that.

Some people don't like cross contamination at all. Call ahead to the restaurant, see if they're nice enough to go out of their way to avoid it. Or don't eat at non-vegan restaurants at all. You do you

Plant-based protein.

I'm a stickler for plant-based proteins when it comes to vegan meals. If you just serve a bunch of starches or veggies, it's not a real meal in my eyes

Meh. While it's true that just replacing cow's milk with almond milk in dairy-based baking recipes won't yield strong results, vegan baking is its own budding industry. You can find vegan recipes for just about any dessert you can think of.

And "but mah protein" has always been a poor reason for rebutting a more plant-based diet. There are so many plant-based proteins out there. Plus soy milk has just as much protein as cow's milk.

My vegan fast food tier list

Top tier is reserved for places with actual plant-based proteins.
B-C: No plant-based proteins, but it's easy enough to game the menu to have fulfilling meals there. DQ is kind of shit for vegan food (expected, since Dairy is in the name) but they have a non-dairy ice cream now which saves them from D-tier.
D: Order fries.
F: Places where even the fries aren't vegan.
