Honorable mention #3- Desperate for Rallies



On November 4th 2018, I made a long, lengthy post on how I felt this contest needed rallies badly. The topic became very popular, and eventually was source material for probably 30 minutes on an episode of "The Show".

Yeah. If you read the analysis when people tried to rally on Reddit almost everyone said that Gamefaqs still exists? Because let us be real the site isn't needed anymore. There are better places to find info and help.

Man I remember when we constantly got over 100.000 votes per match! However myself and I guess most other people will never leave here as long as the site exists.

As recent as 2015 we were getting those epic vote totals. Granted it was due to Undertale, but still.

Undertale vs Melee was actually the second most popular match ever.
Of course, it involves a mega rally against the strongest "normal" rally we have had in a while (probably still weaker than Starcraft run back then I guess ?).

I miss the 2015 contest so much. It was truly awesome.

Honorable mention #2- 'Pathetic vote totals'

On October 18th, 2018, during the very first set of matches in Division 1, user PrestonStarry2 eloquently pointed out a noticeable numerical decline in poll values.



I laughed a lot when I saw the post, and people seemed to reaffirm the belief that PrestonStarry's return was a sign of a former contest veteran who had returned.

Honorable Mention #1- Noctis/Zidane is so ga* topics.





On October 20th 2018, during the Noctis/Master Hand match, people were posting their frustration about Noctis letting everyone down.

I joined the bandwagon on that day, after seeing a user post about Zidane's sexuality. I posted a Noctis is so ga* topic. Both of the ga* topics got taken down within about an hour, but I preserved them due to snipping.

I think it's more Gamefaqs being obsolete.

In the golden age, even a boring blowout would probably have one/two whole stats topics for the matches. There, even hilariously close matches barely got one topic and half. I won't even talk about the votals as it's self evident.
The fact that everyone already knew Link would win also ruined Cloud/Mario and Cloud/Zelda.

Gamefaqs itself dying, ok. Yea that's a big part of it too.

It might be just late night musings, but it's something I really felt during 2018 contest season. That feeling of ennui, people not caring like they did back in 2003 or 2004. I was looking for a reason why, and I think Smash is one of the bigger reasons why.

I believe that Smash Bros., particularly hype for Ultimate and it's release, rendered the 2018 character battle outdated and obsolete.

Why speculate about Mario vs Cloud or Mario vs Link when you can just play it out in game?

While the contest was a cool, novel idea before the mainstream-ization of Smash, that series reduced the impact that our character battles have on people.

Link. The guy is amazing. He's the only one who is immune to all of the 2018 trends. He's the only one who could stand up to Zelda this year.

Cloud beat her in the Loser's Bracket Final, if only just. Still voted Link because there is winning, and then there is dominating.

yay you voted Link too. He was the star of this contest. He's like the New England Patriots, he's like Google or Facebook. He monopolizes the market and crushes competition.

Number 2- Zelda/Squall and its aftermath

On November 13th 2018, Zelda stunned Squall in arguably still the most shocking result of the contest. What followed was complaints by many about how mad people were about Squall losing, particularly by so much.







Those freaking Z games still I have never played. Have no desire to do so. But the aftermath of that match was one of the funniest moments on Board 8 this season.

Number 3- ZenofThunder defends Metal Sonic:




On October 26th, 2018, @ZenOfThunder passionately defended Metal Sonic in his first round matchup against The Boss in Round 1. He posted one of the best analysis crew writeups Ive seen this season. His Metal Sonic gifs along with his post in the crew topic was one of the coolest moments of the year.



Deserving number 3 spot for the User of the Year, easily.

On December 10th 2018, the ending of the Mario/Samus match in the Losers Bracket came down to the last update.
