All three games got a constant slew of free updates to add new content (characters, stages, weapons, modes, etc.) to the game. Granted, Splatoon 2 also got a paid DLC expansion, but it didn't take away from the free updates it was still getting. Of course, there's the argument that all those games were rather barebones at launch, and the updates were an attempt to justify the price, but still.
