This utter failure to suppress a disease that most other countries managed to contain will have real economic costs for Americans, as fear of the virus drives people back into their homes and businesses suffer. In addition to worrying about their jobs and livelihoods, Americans must now be subjected to months of images of Italians casually walking around on the streets while they cower in their houses. Its a painful and stark demonstration of national decline. Even more galling, the U.S.s Covid failure means that its citizens can no longer travel freely around the world; even Europe plans to impose a travel ban on Americans. But the consequences of U.S. decline will far outlast coronavirus. With its high housing costs, poor infrastructure and transit, endemic gun violence, police brutality and bitter political and racial divisions, the U.S. will be a less appealing place for high-skilled workers to live. That means companies will find other countries in Europe, Asia and elsewhere a more attractive destination for investment, robbing the U.S. of jobs, depressing wages and draining away the local spending that powers the service economy. That in turn will exacerbate some of the worst trends of U.S. decline -- less tax money means even more urban decay as infrastructure, education and social-welfare programs are forced to make big cuts. Anti-immigration policies will throw away the countrys most important source of skilled labor and weaken a university system already under tremendous pressure from state budget cuts.

There are people in America who are still living like this since the US has no protections for poor people. Poverty in poor areas of states like Alabama are comparable to 3rd world countries

True story - my grandmother use to feed the chickens from inside the house by just poking food through the slat walls. At Christmas their gift was usually an orange and like some kind of basket of fruit.

Yea the majority of canadians agree that they want to impose travel bans from the US also. And from the outside looking in I agree with that sentiment America has looked like a complete mess this year its embarrassing.

Normally Id agree but I went to Phenix City then Montgomery. Thats a sizable distance and from what I experienced that state is in rough shape.

As a tourist in America the massive divide between the rich and poor is obvious. Los Angeles is a fascinating example where you have expensive, platinum fire hydrants in one part of town and then a whole bunch of shuttered stores and rambling homeless people a few minutes drive away.

The gun violence also brings down american value. but second amendment rights for what? commit crimes?! you have to admit the second amendment even if someone people are responsible it's responsible for all the shootings. I'm not saying end the second amendment but it needs to be reformed were responsible gun owners are the only ones able to purchase. Background checks deeper checks need to be performed.

Yep. America is basically fucked at this point. I would blame Trump, but these have been issues for a long time; Trump just made them worse.

• Bad infrastructure
• Bad health care
• A country that spends trillions on a military while the above is in dire straits
• A country that puts more stock in religion than scientists
• A country that would rather fund additional sports stadiums than providing schools (especially public schools) with up-to-date equipment
• A country that fucks over the middle and lower classes while propping up the upper class
• A country where corporations are very deep in politicians' pockets
• A country that sees firearms as the best thing since the Bible and sliced bread, and is more willing to die for them than for racial/sexual injustices
• A country that botched the COVID-19 response when nearly every other first world country is reopening after taking the necessary measures.
