A Libertyville family is suing Volkswagen for refusing to help police track their stolen car, while a kidnapped 2-year-old was in the back seat.
Back in February, Taylor Shepherd, 34, was fresh from a routine visit to the pet store and had brought her dogs and her 7-year-old into the house. She was 24 weeks pregnant with baby Noah at the time.
Shepherd was going back to get her 2-year-old from the car seat, when two carjackers stormed up her driveway in a white BMW. They attacked her and ran her over.
"So they ran over my entire left side of my body," Shepherd said. "There was tire tracks all over the left side of my stomach."
The carjackers then took the car with 2-year-old Isaiah still buckled up in the back.
"And I was just willing to do anything to get to that car and get my baby out," Shepherd said. "I think the mama bear in everybody can relate."
Shepherd called police, and police called Volkswagen.
Volkswagen's "Car-Net" GPS tracking software could provide a real time location of the car and the 2-year-old. But police were told Shepherd's free trial had expired, and $150 was needed to help.
"Itkind of boggled my mind, to be honest with you," said the children's father, Greg Koutelidakis. "I couldn't understand it."
Police couldn't understand it either.
As the search for the VW widened, Shepherd was taken to the emergency room while being kept in the dark on the uncooperative carmaker.
"This is an abducted 2-year-old, and the response was there is nothing they can do this is their policy," added Deputy Chief Chris Covelli with the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
"I didn't even think that that would be an issue that Volkswagen would refuse to tell us where our son was - especially when it's a kidnapping, and every second matters," said Shepherd. "It's life or death that we're going to get him home."
Eventually, someone paid VW the fee. But by then, Isaiah was found in a parking lot 15 minutes away in Waukegan, walking near a highway.
The family car was found shortly afterward. The thieves, nine months later, are still on the run.
Isaiah and his family are still feeling the effects.
"Nightmares," Shepherd said. "So we're all in therapy."
They're all also all involved in a lawsuit against Volkswagen, filed this week alleging negligence and emotional distress.
Volkswagen said back in February they have a procedure for emergency requests that, "they have executed this process successfully in previous incidents. Unfortunately, in this instance, there was a serious breach of the process."
"How could you not give that information when you know what could happen to that little child?" Shepherd said.
One month after the incident, Volkswagen began offering complimentary Car-Net Safe & Secure connected vehicle emergency services for five years. To date though, VW has never reached out to Shepherd's family personally.

A robot crushed a man to death in South Korea after the machine apparently failed to differentiate him from the boxes of produce it was handling, the Yonhap news agency reported on Wednesday.
The man, a robotics company worker in his 40s, was inspecting the robots sensor operations at a distribution centre for agricultural produce in South Gyeongsang province.
The industrial robot, which was lifting boxes filled with bell peppers and placing them on a pallet, appears to have malfunctioned and identified the man as a box, Yonhap reported, citing the police.
The robotic arm pushed the mans upper body down against the conveyor belt, crushing his face and chest, according to Yonhap.
He was transferred to the hospital but died later, the report said.
In March, a South Korean man in his 50s suffered serious injuries after getting trapped by a robot while working at an automobile parts manufacturing plant.

The suicide deaths of four current and former Los Angeles Sheriffs Department employees over a 24-hour span have prompted a plea from Sheriff Robert Luna urging deputies to check on the well-being of their colleagues and friends.
We are stunned to learn of these deaths, and it has sent shock waves of emotions throughout the department as we try and cope with the loss of not just one, but four beloved active and retired members of our department family, Luna said in an emailed statement Tuesday. During trying times like these its important for personnel regardless of rank or position to check on the well-being of other colleagues and friends.
Luna said he had the deepest concern for our employees well-being, adding that the department was urgently exploring avenues to reduce work stress factors to support our employees work and personal lives. He said the departments Homicide Bureau would investigate the deaths.
There is no indication that that the deaths were related or that foul play was involved, but department sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation said the third and fourth deaths were discovered as word of the earlier deaths were spreading through the agency.
Lunas comments came a day after the suicides of one former and three current employees, which occurred within a 24-hour span that began Monday.
Among them was Cmdr. Darren Harris, who became a recognizable figure on TV news over a 25-year career during which he served as a chief department spokesperson. Harris was found dead in his home in Santa Clarita on Monday morning, according to multiple sources. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said the sources, who agreed to speak with The Times on the condition of anonymity because his death hasnt been publicly acknowledged.
Harris rose steadily through department ranks, with several stopovers in media relations, along with stints in which he oversaw the Transit Services Bureau and ran the Santa Clarita station.
Sometime after noon Monday, authorities found the body of Greg Hovland, a sergeant who worked in the Antelope Valley before his retirement, at his Quartz Hill home, according to the sources. Another employee was found dead shortly after sunset at a residence in Stevenson Ranch. The fourth death was reported at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, when sheriffs homicide detectives responded to a hospital in Pomona where an employee died from suicide.

A candidate for Granbury's city council was arrested Monday on two felony charges of child pornography.
Brad Benson, the Deputy Fire Marshal, a small businessman, and a lifetime member of the Granbury Volunteer Fire Department was taken into custody on Monday morning, the Republican Party of Hood County stated on social media.
Benson is a Republican candidate for Place 4 on the Granbury City Council in Tuesday's election.
"Based on the limited information available, it is our understanding that a serious sex related offense may be involved. If these allegations are true, there is no such way the party would ever condone such activity," the Republican Party of Hood County said in a statement.
According to the Hood County Sheriff Bond report, Benson was arrested at his home in Granbury.

District Attorney W. Ray Crouch and two TBI agents have paid $125,000 to Rutherford County resident Joshua Garton to settle a First Amendment case after Garton' was arrested back in 2021's arrest over a photoshopped meme.
The settlement of claims for malicious prosecution, false arrest, and violations of his First Amendment rights came after almost three years after Garton was charged with harassment and held in jail for 12 days.
The charge was later dismissed for lack of probable cause.
First Amendment retaliation is illegal, and law enforcement officials who arrest people for offending them will pay heavy consequences, said attorney Daniel Horwitz, Gartons co-lead lawyer. Misbehaving government officials apologize with money, and Mr. Garton considers more than $10,000.00 per day that he was illegally incarcerated to be an acceptable apology.
In January 2021, Garton posted an edited photo of The Rites 2009 album cover Pissing On Your Grave, showing two men urinating on a headstone, with a crudely integrated headshot of former Dickson Police Sgt. Daniel Baker superimposed on the headstone.
Text messages included in the court filings reveal that defendants in the case including Crouch, Director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation David Rausch and a number of TBI employees as well as the Dickson Police Department knew Garton had not committed a crime, with some even directly stating that the public would be mad at them because We violated (Gartons) First Amendment rights.
He has a right to post, one unnamed defendant said in the text messages. That doesnt mean there are no consequences.
The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed in cases such as Texas. v. Johnson (1989) that the bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable, and that giving offense is a viewpoint, according to Matal v. Tam (2017).
The right to criticize our government is not merely fundamental, it is essential to democracy, said Brice Timmons, Mr. Gartons co-lead counsel. We are proud to have protected that right for Tennesseans here.

Agreed, Miles and Kamala are the right way to introduce new characters. They can use the name of more popular characters to grow off of but aren't there to replace the already existing legacy character.

A man died at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park over the weekend after he illegally entered the park in the Colorado high country after hours when no employees or people were present, law enforcement officials say.
The man has been identified as a 22-year-old from the nearby town of Carbondale, although officials did not immediately release his name. A cause of death has also not been released but the Garfield County Coroner is investigating the death as a suicide.
According to the Garfield County Sheriff's Office, the man was dressed in black-colored tactical clothing, with patches and emblems that gave the appearance of being associated with law enforcement. The suspect was heavily armed with a semi-automatic rifle and semi-automatic handgun and multiple loaded magazines for both weapons.
He was wearing body armor and what appeared to be a ballistic helmet, according to investigators. Multiple improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, were discovered with the suspect and a vehicle associated with him. The Grand Junction Bomb Squad responded to the scene and they rendered the devices safe.
The Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park was swept by members of the bomb squad as well as operators from the Garfield County All Hazard Response Team to ensure no other IEDs were planted around the park or rides. Investigators said that no one in the public was at risk and that his actions were limited to the property of Glenwood Caverns.
"While this investigation is still ongoing and very active it is important to realize that given the amount of weaponry, ammunition, and explosive devices found, the suspect could have implemented an attack of devastating proportions upon our community and first responders," said Garfield County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Walt Stowe.
The man trespassed onto the property overnight while it was closed and was discovered during the park's pre-opening maintenance and security inspections, Glenwood Caverns said in a statement. The death did not take place near any of the park's secure areas and was not related to any rides or attractions, the statement continued.
"This very sad and tragic incident reminds us how much our Glenwood Springs community means to us," said General Manager Nancy Heard. "We appreciate the swift action and thorough work of the Garfield County Sherriff's Department and Coroner's Office, as well as the Garfield County All Hazard Response Team and other authorities assisting in the investigation, working together to ensure the park is safe to reopen. Thank you for all you do."
Investigators also searched the man's residence to try to determine the extent of his criminal activity.
Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, located on a mountainside next to the tourist town of Glenwood Springs, is closed through Nov. 9. The winter season for the park begins Nov. 10.

Sunny Katherinne White has been charged by the Lake County Attorney's Office with vehicular homicide in connection with the death of Mika Josephine Westwolf.
Westwolf died after being hit by a vehicle as she walking along Highway 93 near White Coyote Road just outside of Arlee in March 2023.
Seven months later, White has been charged with five felonies: vehicular homicide while under the influence, accidents involving another person or deceased person, two counts of criminal child endangerment, and criminal possession of dangerous drugs.
White was arrested on October 20, 2023, on an extra-jurisdiction warrant and spent the weekend in Flathead County Jail. On Sunday, she was bonded out.
MTN News has confirmed an affidavit was filed on Monday which details what investigators claim happened the night of the deadly hit-and-run.
According to the affidavit, on March 31, 2023, at around 4:15 a.m., Tribal Police Officer T.J. Haynes was patrolling north of Arlee on Highway 93 when he saw vehicle debris and a body. Mika Westwolf was later identified as the victim.
Just over an hour later, at 5:23 a.m., a Lake County Sheriff's Office deputy noticed a gold 2008 Cadillac Escalade with front-end damage and a missing passenger side rear-view mirror parked just outside of Polson. The damage to the vehicle matched the description of the vehicle debris described at the scene.
The deputy saw a woman soon identified as Sunny White moving items from the banged-up Escalade and into another car. According to the affidavit, White said that her vehicle was overheating and she had called a friend to help her.
The affidavit states that White claimed she had hit a deer, did not stop, and kept driving - [White] claimed she was passing a bottle back to her baby and didnt see the deer," court documents state.
The affidavit reports that White had her two children, 4-year-old Aryan and 2-year-old Nation, in her car.
White told Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Dager that she was driving with her two small children to Kalispell from Butte for the weekend."
She also denied using alcohol and that she hadnt used methamphetamine or fentanyl in a week," court documents state.
In the statement made to Trooper Dager, White explained that she assumed what she hit was a deer and swerved to the left on the highway. The vehicle was then seized and towed away.
MHP Trooper Wayne Bieber documented the crash scene. The affidavit says that evidence from the scene indicates that Westwolf was walking in the northbound lane of travel or near the fog line when she was struck by the suspect vehicle.
Westwolf was hit head-on and the force of the crash propelled her body closer to the north side of the road, the affadavit states. Westwolf died from numerous blunt force injuries.
After interviewing Westwolf's brother, Davian Howard, troopers learned that the siblings had driven to a bar in the Ravalli area that evening.
According to the affidavit, on the way back into Arlee the two stopped near North Valley Creek, approximately five miles north of the crash scene, where Wetwolf left her phone in the vehicle and walked away. Howard was unable to find Westwolf and left her a voicemail at 1:13 a.m.
The affidavit states that according to cellphone data, White had left Butte close to midnight, drove through Missoula at 2:45 a.m., and was at the scene of the crash at 3 a.m.
After obtaining a search warrant for Whites vehicle, methamphetamine, five syringes, and two unopened packages of Narcan were found. Whites blood sample also returned positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl.
White was ordered to appear in the Lake County Courthouse on the first Wednesday following her arrest.
In the months after her death, Westwolf's family created the "Mika Matters" movement to raise awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) and to call for justice in her case.
The family released a statement on Friday that states:
"As we mark seven months since Mika's tragic passing, it is essential to acknowledge that this arrest is just the beginning of the journey towards justice. The fight to seek accountability, raise awareness, and protect the lives of Indigenous people and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives remains an ongoing battle. Our hearts go out to the families who are still searching for their loved ones, and we remain deeply saddened by the fact that Native Americans continue to go missing at an alarming rate. The urgency to address this issue has never been greater."

An 8-year-old boy and his pregnant mother were pulled over at gunpoint by multiple Sacramento police officers on their way to football practice.
Shanice Stewart, who is nine months pregnant, and her son Brandon were stopped by police Oct. 17 on the highway, after the officers mistook Brandon for a juvenile with two felony warrants, including one for gun possession, according to Sacramento police.
"I noticed that they had guns drawn and they had instructions for me to then toss my keys out of the window, Stewart told ABC News. "And open the door with my left hand, proceed to get out and put my hands in the air and then walk towards them. I immediately broke down because I didn't know or understand what was going on."
Brandon got out of the vehicle afraid that his mother would be arrested or worse, according to Stewart. He screamed and pleaded for her to come back to the car. The 8-year-old, not realizing the officers thought he was the suspect, approached them frantically explaining that his mother was just taking him to football practice and hadnt done anything wrong. It was at that point that Stewart believes the officers realized that Brandon wasnt the suspect.
"I was scared of him getting shot, Stewart said. "You don't know what to expect, especially when it's multiple officers with their guns drawn towards the car. You just you don't know. But I was definitely in fear of getting shot, me or my son. Just by one of them feeling like they were in danger or they did not feel comfortable."
The officers released Stewart and Brandon shortly after, according to Stewart. Police told ABC News they first misidentified Brandon through helicopter surveillance, as he and his mother were leaving their home to go to football practice. Brandon matched the description of a suspect because of his hair style and clothing, according to police.
The next day a captain with the Sacramento police told Stewart the suspect they are looking for is a teenager, according to Stewart. Brandon, a third grader, is about 310, 56 pounds.
"From a distance, officers observed a juvenile who they believed to be the wanted suspect, enter a vehicle with tinted windows," Sacramento police told ABC News through a statement. "Based on the information regarding firearm history, a high-risk stop was initiated. As officers were conducting the stop and the windows were rolled down, they realized the juvenile in the vehicle was not the wanted suspect, and at that point the high-risk stop was ended."
According to Stewart, Brandon is traumatized. Every time they approach the highway, her son asks if they can take the street route instead. When he sees a police cruiser drive past their car, he reminds his mother to drive safely. He also only rides in the back seat of the car now, where he feels safer.
"I do keep repeating to him that all police officers are not bad. You can't just assume that," Stewart said. "I don't want him to hate the law. As far as me, at any given moment, every time an officer gets behind me, Im at fear for my life. I'm scared and he's scared."
The Sacramento Police Department told ABC News that the suspect is still at large. When asked if any disciplinary measures would be taken against the officers involved, Sacramento police said the incident is still under review.
"We must acknowledge that a case of mistaken identity occurred," Sacramento police told ABC News through a statement. "Our officers provided explanation and an apology to the mother and her son. Our department has been in contact with the mother since the incident. We recognize the impact that police interactions can have on our community members."
Stewart is currently exploring the possibility of taking legal action against the Sacramento Police Department.
"It was definitely heartbreaking. It's something that is a life changer." Stewart said. "For us to not have done anything and for it to had went that far."

A man who stood motionless in a shop window in Warsaw holding a bag and hoping to pass for a mannequin has been charged with suspected theft and burglary.
Polish police said the 22-year-old suspect, whom they have not named, went unnoticed by staff and shoppers as he stood frozen in the window to blend in with the mannequins.
He was accused of going into various departments and taking jewellery after closing time.
With a bag in his hand he stood still in front of a shop window, pretending to be a display mannequin, police in the central Warsaw district of rdmiecie said in a statement. When he felt safe, he went hunting and robbed the island of jewellery.
The man was is also accused of other shopping centre incidents. On another day, he allegedly went to a shopping centre bar after closing time and ate his fill, then entered a designer clothes shop to exchange his clothes for new ones. He was captured on CCTV sliding under a tiny gap in the shop shutters.
In another incident, he is alleged to have waited until closing time to take money from several cash registers and to have attempted to steal items.
Eventually, police said, his luck finally ran out when he was spotted and held by security.
