Yes.

Unless there are exceptional circumstances (public safety issues), the British police don't name suspects until they are charged.

As a rule, British police don't name suspects until they are formally charged with a crime.

Exceptions for suspected murderers on the loose etc.

It was a dangerous hit that he put out, but to suggest it was worthy of a manslaughter charge? No, it was a hockey play that went bad.

A dirty attempt at tripping someone while wearing blades on your feet is something that seems like it deserves a manslaughter charge.

it wasnt a hit. And even if it was a dangerous hit thats exactly the thing that should be targeted to deter. Hockeys a physical sport by nature, we dont need people trying to end others careers to still have entertaining hits and fights.

and this. Glad to see the charge, I was very vocal about this kick being stupid and intentional. He didnt mean to kill a guy but regardless this doesnt belong in hockey and this isnt how a body reacts to a hit on that fashion.

his carelessness resulted in a death and I hope they get the conviction on it.

This kind of logic was used by the people who didn't want American football players to have better helmets and actually undergo proper concussion protocol.

I'm talking bigger picture. Pursuing charges against things less than death.

Say a dirty back check knocks a guy into the boards and he ends up paralyzed, or a batter gets smoked in the head with a fastball causing a significant loss in brain function or something awful like that. Would the victim be able to sue the checker?

I'm fully in favor of better helmets and neck guards and all the details here. But if people want to start suing for bad sports plays, dirty or accidental, does this not open those doors? (Or are they open already and nobody's bothered to actually go that route? I don't actually know).

If someone is blatantly performing an action in a sport that runs afoul of that sport's rules and regulations because that action is inherently dangerous and harmful to the life and health of an individual playing that sport, then they should be charged for whatever harm results from their recklessness. Someone getting checked into the boards wouldn't fall into that, since checking is a normal part of the game and isn't in and of itself a rules violation. Kicking someone with your skates is though.

Where, precisely, is the "less than death" in this case?

Because Adam Johnson is dead.

You're argument is that they shouldn't prosecute an action that results in death because it may lead to the prosecution of actions that lead to severe injury?

Really?

It definitely went bad and noone goes for that outcome but if he was flailing his leg out like that on purpose then this is an unfortunate and unlikely outcome. I think whatever comes from the court whether it's nothing or some charges I'd be ok with. I don't think the dude should be made an example of.

The best outcome is neckguards for players.

Any hit or play that injures a player now means jail time?

If this idiocy was in effect in the NHL about 45 players would be behind bars in the last month.

Literally a "how to kill Hockey in one fell swoop".

I feel like "don't kick people with your skates" is an incredibly low standard. If this arrest and subsequent investigation result in nothing more than suppressing any skaters nascent desire to kick someone's throat then that's just a burden I'm more than happy to bear.

They decided to make an arrest after an investigation into the circumstances of this particular incident.

Dozens of professional sportspeople get injured every week, and no one goes to jail. Hundreds of hits, tackles, and head-high bouncers (cricket), that don't lead to prosecutions. There is no slippery slope.

If the police/prosecutors determine that there are legal grounds for a charge of manslaughter, should they let it slide for the sake of ice hockey?

So I actually completely missed this accident. I didn't hear about it. When I first saw this thread, I thought "oh, please" this has happened in the NHL before, but luckily Zednik did not die when his neck was slashed by his teammate's skate and Malarchuk miraculously survived. It was probably some freak accident that is unbelivably unfortunate but no one should be arrested.

I hunted down the video and watched it like 50 times now (there's no blood so its not hard to watch). I have absolutely no idea what Matt Petgrave was trying to do on that play. I was thinking because he contacted one of Johnson's teammates right before he struck Johnson that MAYBE Johnson's teammate dragged Petgrave down which caused his skate to kick up at the wrong time which would still be incredibly dangerous because hockey players know to never do that. Kinda similar to how Zednik's throat was slashed.

I can't find any evidence in the one angle that seems to exist that such a thing happened. Petgrave legit just kicked his leg up for seemingly no reason. I'm sure the PD have additional angles since it was on television and the only angle that was released was obviously the live box cam footage. I think the guy deserved to be arrested.
