Oh yeah there's all sorts of random wildlife around here throughout the day - squirrels, birds, lizards, turtles, sometimes deer and fox >_>

If you take them outside you'll want to make sure you're giving them flea/tick/mosquito/heartworm medication (they make all-in ones that you apply to their skin).

Yeah fur and dander might be a lot different. We bought a pretty large air purifier recently and I thought that would actually do more to help keep this stuff from building up on the floor but it doesn't... still big tufts of fur scattered around.

The neighborhood cat that visited my parents' house would bring all kinds of offerings.. somehow even a rabbit! All the cats around my old apartment never did though, but the three kittens especially liked exploring outside. How frequently do you have to clean fur up around the house?

Soon >_> I have been lazy it's my first day on my computer in like a week.

She was chilling in the living room with us and dozing off, then she woke up and left to go back to the bedroom... hopefully in time she comes to realize this is her house too. Maybe it's the trash TV we're watching that kept her awake.

edit: UPDATE she came back! She's looking out the window now.

Are there birds or other animals she's seeing out the window?

I know *having* cats isn't that different from letting them visit daily, but I'm not sure what to expect fur/dander wise.. and part of me would want them to still have some outside expose (maybe on a leash?)

It's 2 PM and I don't know where the time has gone, just friggin' worn out between yard work in the heat yesterday and two days of not sleeping well. In the morning she started coming back to me and cuddling and grabbing my head with her paw and rubbing my face with hers so everything is good there. Her nose seems to have cleared up a lot, she ate breakfast and was exploring the house more and actually smelling a lot of things which I think is good.

I guess she got tired because she went back to her bedroom upstairs and is fast asleep. I need to take a break just so tired, might play a game for a bit. Probably already said it but I haven't played anything or really watched anything all week and we didn't even stay in our bedroom for a good year and a half up until now so it's weird being there without any noise or anything.

I'm glad her energy/curiosity has climbed back up, always a good sign! How come you haven't had much downtime lately?

How is your cat search going, Ruvan? Or were you talking further down the road?

Haha - definitely true, in some ways you are fortunate to have a partner who is as invested in the cats as you. My search is a bit delayed, but I do have to renew my apartment lease in the next month. If I decide to stay I will likely get two friends - my biggest hang up is that I've never actually lived with a cat, just had them visit. At the same time, I realize I'm (somewhat) making excuses!

They gave her fluids and then gave us a prescription for a drug that increases appetite, and makes them more vocal, and makes them more hyperactive. She ate a lot of food afterwards which is great... got ANOTHER appointment on Monday for an antibiotics shot. Also my wife left the refrigerated antibiotics out for the past two days apparently so there goes that -_- Thankfully I don't think we need them just because of the appointment on Monday. At a minimum it will be another $60...

Guess your wife is sleeping in the fridge tonight! (Mods, jk jk jk)

We haven't tried but that's actually a really good idea, can see if she can smell/eat it and then if she does sprinkle it over her wet food.

I mixed in treats with some of the dry food (mostly what I fed them) sometimes to get them to eat it - also found that each cat had different tastes, some liked wet food, some liked tuna, some liked sandwich meat, etc

Well that's really awesome they didn't bug your asthma! I know there are hypoallergenic cats that people with cat allergies can handle just fine, but I didn't think about how they might impact someone with asthma.

Respiratory infections are really common with kittens yes, it's like getting a cold for humans and when they're in confined shelter environments it can spread really quickly.

Going to have to do some extra measures today, she isn't eating (can't smell the food) and her nose is really stopped up. Tried more steam therapy and saline but it hasn't helped. Will probably have to get creative - some people said they mix in kitten formula with meat-based baby foods which might be a temporary solution to get at least some nutrients in her/be able to give her the antibiotics.

Oh no - I hope her appetite comes back! Does she eat treats? You could mix them with some wet food... then again I only cared for older kittens, so I don't have a lot of knowledge about this

Lmao that's awesome how you discovered it was actually three and not one. That's a cool surprise. How come ya didn't keep them?? I hope they got a good home.

I have only seen bits and pieces about COVID19 specifically in cats. The last thing I read a month or two ago was that a small group of cats was observed, they showed no symptoms but they were secreting the virus in their saliva or something like that. Seems like it's more dangerous to humans but still wouldn't wanna risk that.

And lol no I've never had a cat sleep on my head. Step on it to get somewhere yes. So that was awesome.

Vet said she's showing signs of early upper respiratory infection, gave us antibiotics to help fend it off and recommended we keep her in the bathroom when we shower (for the steam) and use pure saline drops to help clear her nostrils.

AND she was like "there are three viruses that can cause this and the two most common have vaccines, so your other cats are protected and it's not a big deal if they are exposed to each other." so that's a relief.

A few reasons, but primarily because I've never had fur/feather pets due to worries about my asthma - I remember being pretty miserable in a friend's house just a year before I first met the cats (though in all fairness they had three large dogs and a cat). At first I just petted Nomis and later the kittens, then I'd let them sit on my lap, but never go further than my chest. Surprisingly I didn't have any reactions, despite my apartment having five cats visiting at one point!

Is respiratory infections and other ailments common in young kittens? I never really had to deal with young young kittens, I think the trio were about eight to twelve weeks when I met them.

@Ruvan22 That is really amazing lol, it's nice to hear that the older cat just delivered the kittens instead of eating them/chasing them away. What happened to the kittens?

I definitely don't think it's a bad idea to get an older cat, just gonna take a little more attention to keep them on their separate diets and the kitten's gonna need more attention and play time (well, they'll both need a lot of attention).

Last night Desi slept on my head which was very unexpected lol. Two nights ago she was very cuddly and rubbing my face with her head but last night she just straight up climbed onto my head and laid down like a furry telephone.

I was reading about contagious diseases and got really scared, too. Apparently cats can get a type of feline coronavirus (not SARS-COV-2/COVID-19, a different one) that they can get over within 7-10 days with mild symptoms... but in 5-10% of cats that get it they can develop Feline Infectious Peritonitis which can take weeks, months or even years to manifest and it has a 95% mortality rate :( It's really terrifying. Thankfully this coronavirus is spread from feces and doesn't survive long in open air but still.

One site said that 50% of cats in single cat households will get this feline coronavirus in their life which is also crazy to me. There's no FDA approved vaccine and no way to test for FIP just to see if the cat ever had the coronavirus in their life.

Really scared the hell out of me tbh.

It really caught me by surprise - the first cat (Nomis) had become friendly to the point where I'd come home from work and she'd be outside my door, come in for a few hours and then wander back out. Then one Saturday I opened the door (she had got used to coming in on the weekends too), my jaw literally dropped to see two of the kittens with her. I left the door open so they could come in and still see an open exit and soon after developed the same pattern; a week or so later I noticed one looked different every time I saw her... and realized there were actually three. Sadly over time all three disappeared.. one (the most sociable, I named Flatty because she had fluffy fur that made her look fat) was missing four months later when I took all of them to get spayed. The second was the only male of the three (named him Shadow because he was the quietest) kept visiting me for almost six months before also disappearing, and Echo (the loudest) kept me company for almost a year and a half. I like to think/hope that all three were formally adopted by others in the apartment complex...

I didn't even consider the risk of COVID for pets - has there been a lot of research into it? Desi sleeping on your head really shows her comfort level! Did either of the others do that?

@Ruvan22 I would definitely recommend two kittens, I think it's a lot less work. You can put them on the same diet, same litter (should use a non-clumping litter until they're at least six months old), they spend a lot of energy playing with each other and socializing and since they're the same size there's less risk of them seriously injuring each other - plus they learn how far they can/should go. And they just get used to each other a lot more easily I think. Though that doesn't mean older cats won't automatically get along with younger cats, but the size disparity can be a little intimidating for the kitten and the older cat might not be as eager to play.

Though older cats do have that disadvantage of not being as easy to adopt out - as long as you've got a good, honest background on the older cat it might not be as challenging (i.e., if they know the cat gets along well with other cats). Then you do need to pay more attention to stuff like the food, which can be a minor inconvenience and extra cost. And I think if you're getting them at the same time then you've got the advantage that neither one has established their territory. Though I think "territory" for cats is more like "social bubble" for humans, at least when talking about indoor cats; some are fine sharing a cat tree, others just want to have a couch to themselves when they're there, etc. That's been my personal experience, maybe someone's had a really overbearing cat who has a favorite room or something :|

He was just staring at her and chilling. Not gonna lie I caved for a few minutes and let him hang out while we played with a string, when she got tired he stepped in and started showing off with his speed and size. She picked up some of his habits already from just those few minutes of interaction, it's pretty awesome. Also she's getting really fast and leaping pretty far! I might have to start recording video of her playing.

Thanks for the thoughts - one of the first cat experiences I had was with a trio of kittens literally brought to my apartment door by another older cat I had befriended. All three were tuxedo/piebald, so I don't think the older cat (grey and white) was their mother. They kept each other busy playing/chasing, so it was a bit easier than having to entertain one kitten by myself.
One reason I'm a bit sympathetic to older cats is due to one of the other cats I met there - an older orange one that seemed to just want a comfortable place to sleep. He didn't eat that much but napped a lot on the carpet and would seek out some head scratches from time to time.. I got the impression he'd lived around the complex for most of his life.

We definitely want to see more pictures and a video of Desi!

Oh yeah my first experience with cats was this homeless kitty that would hang around our house, and we started giving her food and she just stuck around. Eventually my mom let her come in for a little bit at a time and she really enjoyed it (the theory was that she was an indoor cat before but someone just left her when they moved). It was Oregon, too, there weren't as many mosquitoes or dangerous bugs there like where we live now.

We only intended on having Mulder at first to be honest. Despite growing up with cats we had only really had experience with multiple cats at once and didn't realize that you really need to have a couple for them to socialize with. Also I think my wife was kind of jealous - she wasn't working after we moved and she spent all day with him but he still just wanted to always spend his time with me lol.

And yeah he was just uncontrollable, he would just "raid" our bed non-stop all night - charge it, jump on it, scratch at our feet and hands/arms and run away. That's when we started doing more research and realized cats generally need furry friends.

I've heard the same thing about older cats having less luck. I think it's not just their size but also the fact that their personalities are a little more set, whereas with kittens I think you have more opportunities to train them and stuff.

Speaking of which my wife finally took her turn sleeping with little Desi last night and apparently she just slept on my pants still, didn't cuddle with her like she did with me :( I hope she grows up feeling comfortable with us both.

From your experience, would you recommend getting two kittens or one kitten one older cat? I'm still not sure on pulling the trigger and actually *adopting* (versus the neighborhood cat interactions), but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to get three cats (two kittens and a senior).

I'm also enjoying your updates on Desi's socialization! When Mulder came in did he stare at her? Or just do his own thing?

It's hard man lol. When they've been inside for so many years they are really cautious and slow and just hang out close to the house and you're like "OK that's not too bad". Then they start wandering away... and bringing back wild animals and everything.

Stopped doing that when the vet said that cats can get heartworm from mosquitoes. They do make topical medicines to prevent that but ugh. Don't even want to risk it!!

You can get them used to things at a young age, like walks on leashes and stuff. If they're used to wearing collars as a kitten they won't even sweat it when you put one on as an adult, and some crave that exercise like a dog.

I definitely feel you - all my experience has been with outdoor non feral cats (a couple in my parents' neighborhood and eight around my apartment), so I didn't feel guilty about them being outside since I never had them inside to begin with. Still, all of them seemed to like visiting indoors, a couple might even have been happy living inside if circumstances were different. I'm 65% leaning towards getting a cat when I renew my lease - kittens are fun (one of the most attached neighborhood cats was an orange kitten), but I've also heard senior cats often get left behind at shelters. Were you guys intending to get two cats at the outset? Or only after seeing how energetic Mulder was?

They've both basically been indoor cats, when we moved to the house we let them go outside for a little bit on the back porch under supervision but Scully started going a little *too* far, plus there's been a lot of ticks out there so we decided to nix that.

Scariest thing was when those contractors I mentioned earlier left the door open and Scully got out... we spent half an hour looking for her. Thankfully she is a sausage addict so as soon as she heard the snack package crinkling she ran right back.

I'm glad there was a good ending to that story. I've only been around indoor/outdoor cats (never really my own) but always thought if I *did* get a cat I'd want it to have *some* outdoor exposure, obviously without letting it decimate wildlife etc.

As promised, pictures of the other cats:

This is Mulder, he's my little cuddle bear. We got *really* lucky when we got him, we were staying at my sister's house when we were PCSing back from Cali to the east coast and we decided we would check out the animals at PetCo because we weren't allowed to have any cats at our apartment. Mulder had just been there for less than a day and we played with him and he was so cute, doing this swooping motion with his paw to pick up the toys. And then he fell asleep on my lap and that was that. We had to wait for him to get his surgery and then we got him, hung out for a few more days and then hit the road. He visited the Grand Canyon and Roswell on the travels and he's just a really loving boy all around. Whenever we watch other peoples' animals he's always the first to come out and greet them and boop them on the snoot and everything.

And this is our pocket panther Scully. She is *really* sweet and loving but it took her years to warm up to us. We got her a couple months after we got Mulder, we realized he was going to be a wild kitten who wouldn't settle down by himself and we realized he needed someone his size to play with. The local shelter had an adoption day at PetSmart which is where we saw Scully, but she was staying with her siblings and mother at a gentleman's house - we asked if we could bring Mulder over to see how he got along with them. Honestly there was a little black kitten that he fell in love with instantly, buuuut my wife saw this little grey and white killer and knew that was the one. I know cats are good hunters but Scully takes the cake, she is lightning fast and has brought in lizards and stuff from outside (though we stopped letting her go outside, she was getting too feral, using the houseplants as a litter box, and I don't like all the insects out there).

I like the names!! Was Mulder also an indoor/outdoor cat for a while?

She doesn't automatically come cuddle yet, she goes to a pair of pants that I have on the bed when she wants to lay down and then I come pick her up and bring her close to me and then on her own terms she wanders over and lays down on me. It's really cute. I just hope she warms up to the other cats soon it is hard dividing time up between the three.

starcraft

warcraft 1&2, C&C, AoE1&2, all had everyone was the same with different skins and maybe 1 unit.

Did you play C&C 1? The NOD and GDI vehicles and air units were completely different...

TC, I'd say Dune 2 as it introduced the concept of resource management, building strategy, and unit management

"In a public video posted to her Facebook page on Monday, Ms. Ploss said she took the criticism over her remarks as a badge of honor. Wearing a Women for Trump hat and sitting next to a cardboard cutout of Mr. Trump, Ms. Ploss mocked those who condemned her actions.
Now get out of my way, because I have a country to save, she said. Thats the end of Dianna Plosss public statement."

Even if we pretend that this is normal behavior, which it isn't, you don't treat strangers like you treat family.

It doesn't matter since the other guy has done far worse in the irrelevant creepy department and in the actually important got Americans killed by refusing to treat a global pandemic seriously.

Biden is an absolutely horrible candidate and trump is still worse in every meaningful way. It's why no one ever talks about anything Biden does well or stands to do during his presidency. Just, hey he isn't trump.

I was speaking about social gatherings where you didn't know the other people well, not just family. I guess we'll just agree to disagree about this point.

My wife and I considered a few southern states as when we were trying to figure out where we might live when we got married. Ultimately we decided to stay where we grew up.

In glad I'm not in the south, but what reasoning is being given for these kinds of decisions? Its obviously nonsense but they have to be saying something about why they are making decisions completely against all medical advice.

Being a GA resident, I'll try to respond as best as I can remember - Kemp stated that the economy would be severely impacted by mandating mask/social distancing, specifically highlighting small businesses and restaurants. He didn't specify the connection between mandated masks in general activities out on the community and economic impact. The mandate doesn't *prohibit* small businesses from having their own mandates, just makes it appear to be a "do your own thing"
