Crunchyroll added Strawberry Panic a few days ago (apparently not one of the Funi transfers, just a random addition). I won't be able to watch it for awhile, but perhaps this will finally be the good yuri anime I've been seeking.

133. K-On!
https://myanimelist.net/anime/5680/K-On
Spring 2009 (13 episodes) plus 1 OVA, Spring 2010 (0/26, unfinished)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.85/10 S1, 8.17/10 S2
Best Character: Hirasawa Yui

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7_-RBl0lfY

Premise: Hirasawa Yui joins the Light Music Club thinking it will be about simple instruments. She almost quits, but the promise of slacking off and a newfound love for guitar keeps her in.

The Good: K-On is a cute girls music anime, but it isnt super focused on the idea of forming a band. They play songs sometimes, but they also slack off or have hilarious misunderstandings or do fun stuff entirely unrelated to music. Im a fan of music anime, so I liked the bits focused on the band the best. Yui was a great character. I vividly remember one bit where she was supposed to be studying but it kept cutting to her sitting on her bed strumming the guitar with a dumb look on her face. The slice-of-life was also decent.

The Bad: Years ago, when I felt myself getting out of anime (after watching junk like Eden of the East and My Little Monster back-to-back), I finally decided to watch K-On as a kind of break glass in case of emergency anime to get me back into it. It sounded like the perfect one for me, cute girls playing music and having fun and everything is light and fluffy. And, yes, thats exactly what K-On is. It just didnt grab me the way Id hoped it would. I got to the end of the first season, thought it was fine, and then didnt watch any anime for a few years. K-On didnt do anything wrong. It was probably just the wrong time in my life for anime and nothing wouldve hooked me back in. I remember it being a bit too unfocused for my tastes, but someday Ill rewatch it from the start with a better frame of mind and see if thats really true.

Overall: Its tough to talk about this because obviously I didnt even get halfway through it. K-On was a fun anime with cute characters and some nice music segments. Eventually I intend to restart it from the beginning and give it a fairer chance than it had the first time through.

COMING UP TOMORROW:
132: The club this anime wanted to join has been disbanded.
C80: This character doesn't like their nickname.
131: This anime considers music to be evil.

(I apologize once more for today having two anime I haven't finished. I haven't finished 131 either but, again, after that one there will only be two more unfinished anime on the list. Also I would gladly finish 131 right now if it were still available anywhere...)

I'm willing to admit I was wrong and start watching anything from next season that gets good reactions. I mean the description for Lycoris Recoil made it sound super lame, girls work in a cafe and battle random stuff lol. I completely wrote that one off but then everyone raved about the first episode and what do you know, it's the best anime of the season.

I only got a few episodes into the third season for this. It wasn't a fun show to watch weekly so I decided to hold off, then I just never got around to it again.

134. Attack on Titan
https://myanimelist.net/anime/16498/Shingeki_no_Kyojin
Spring 2013 (25 episodes), Spring 2017 (12 episodes), Summer 2018 (3/12 episodes, unfinished), Spring 2019 (0/10 episodes, unfinished), Winter 2021 (0/16 episodes, unfinished)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 8.53/10 S1, 8.50/10 S2, 8.62/10 S3, 9.07/10 S4, 8.83/10 S5
Best Character: Mikasa Ackerman

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OkpRK2_gVs

Premise: Humanity has retreated behind high walls to hide from the ravenous titans. Then one day they manage to break through the first gate, and Eren Yeagers life changes forever.

The Good: Attack on Titan is an action anime where they use a kind of grappling hook system to battle gigantic titans. I really love the setting and the premise. It was like a new take on a zombie apocalypse where the zombies are huge. I liked the various characters in the training class (though badass Mikasa was my obvious favorite). This is a world that felt like it had a ton of secrets lurking just over the horizon, and I was excited for the characters to begin exploring it.

The Bad: Attack on Titan killed a lot of my enthusiasm early on. This is a spoiler from a bit into the first season, but its so central to the series that I imagine most people know about it by now. The instant Eren turned into a Titan himself, my hype levels dropped. It went from a giant zombie apocalypse to, I guess a biological mecha show? Suddenly it was about super titan powers and not methodically clearing out titans and reclaiming the land like I hoped it would be.

Overall: This was a hard anime to rank because I definitely enjoyed it for what it was. Given how popular Attack on Titan is, its also probably a good thing it went the way it did rather than how I hoped it would. I was just super into it when it seemed like a fairly grounded setting other than the existence of these gigantic titans, but then it turned into a quasi-mecha show with weird powers and I dunno, it just wasnt my favorite thing. Ill go back and finish it someday but I havent gotten around to it yet.

I'm a week early again but meh. Time to go through next season's anime and select ten I want to watch. I started from least members to most members on MAL. First seasons only, no new seasons for old stuff.

Eternal Boys: Middle-aged men become an idol group. I like idol shows but I don't see myself watching an idol boy show unless there's a cute girl manager or a cute girl ghost in it. Middle-aged men are the exact opposite of a cute girl.

Akiba Maid War: Maid cafes in Akihabara. I have absolutely no idea what this is about but it's by PA Works so I'll at least check it out.

Housing Complex C: An ancient evil stalks the residents of this housing complex. I don't have much faith that this will actually be good, but horror anime is so rare that I'm obligated to check it out.

Uchi no Shishou wa Shippo ga Nai: Something about a shapeshifting Tanuki girl and a Rakugo storyteller. The description on this made no sense, I'll probably wait to see reactions on it.

4-nin wa Sorezore Uso wo Tsuku: Four friends each have a secret. Whether this is good or not will depend on what those secrets are, but I'm willing to give this a shot. Slice-of-life comedy where each character knows some things but no one knows everything and they're trying to keep it from each other sounds fun.

Shinmai Renkinjutsushi no Tenpo Keiei: A alchemist girl opens an atelier. It sounds like an Atelier anime but it's based on a light novel, not the video games. Still, I love alchemy so I'll give it a shot.

Futoku no Guild: Ecchi monster hunter guild. I'm not against fanservice but it isn't enough to draw me in on its own either. I'll wait and see the general reaction this gets to see if it has anything going on other than boobies.

Love Flops: An anime about love. The description for this doesn't say anything else. Rom-coms are so hit-or-miss for me that I'll wait and see the general reaction for this.

Play it Cool, Guys: Sexy clumsy boys. I'm sure this will be amazing for people who are into it, but I'm more of a sexy clumsy girls type, so I'll skip it.

Bocchi the Rock: Girls form a band. I'm a sucker for music anime so I'll give it a shot.

Princess of the Bibliophile: A princess who loves reading but now needs to win back her fiancee. I'm sort of interested in this, it feels like it could either be fun or be the exact kind of romance that I hate.

Beast Tamer: An amazing beast-tamer wanders around taming beasts. At least it isn't an isekai but from the description it may as well be. I'll skip it for now and see what the overall reaction to it is.

Noumin Kanren no Skill bakka Agetetara Nazeka Tsuyoku Natta: This is about a guy who maxed out his farming skills, which apparently maxed out all his skills? This sounds like an isekai but it doesn't have that tag. Ah well, even if it is, I like the Stardew Valley farming concept. I'll give it a shot.

Raven of the Inner Palace: An emperor goes to see a cursed consort. I could see this being great or terrible depending on the kind of story it is, the description was pretty vague. I guess I'll give it a shot.

More than a married couple, but not lovers: This is about a government program that pairs people together, and one couple wants to get high marks so they're allowed to switch to the people they actually wanted to pair with, but it turns out they might be more compatible than they thought. This... I've seen this exact premise before! I never watched it, but this sounds exactly like Love and Lies. What a ripoff.

Do It Yourself!!: Cute girls do handiwork. Say no more, anime, I'm sold.

Akuyaku Reijou nanode Last Boss wo Kattemimashita: Another VN isekai where a girl gets pulled into a game in the role of a character she knows dies horribly. I don't hate the concept of a girl needing to avoid a character's bad end, but nothing about this draws me in either.

Shinobi no Ittoki: Something about ninja wars, I dunno. The description didn't say anything other than that and that alone isn't enough to draw me in.

Tensei shitara Ken Deshita: An isekai where a guy gets reincarnated as a sword. I wonder what the isekai genre will do when they have reincarnated the main character as everything imaginable.

Urusei Yatsura: Guy chosen to play tag with an alien girl with the fate of the world in the balance, hilarity ensues. This actually sounds like it might be fun, I'll give it a shot.

The Eminence in Shadow: Isekai where guy invents a cult so he can have followers pretend to fight it, but it turns out the cult actually exists. This idea sounds terrible.

Blue Lock: Intense soccer anime. This doesn't have cute girls in it, so I'll pass on it.

Chainsaw Man: A guy gets killed and becomes a chansaw demon. This sounds exactly like the fake movie they made in The Sopranos, Cleaver, where a guy died and gets brought back to life (by the power of science, or maybe it's supernatural) with a cleaver on his hand. Replace cleaver with chainsaw and it looks like this. I'm sure there's more to this than that, I've never read it and it's very a popular manga, but thinking about it like that is funny to me. Regardless, this seems like an anime where I'll wait until it's over so I can binge it.

TENTATIVE TEN ANIME I WILL WATCH (In order of most excited to least excited)
Shinmai Renkinjutsushi no Tenpo Keiei (Alchemy anime)
Do It Yourself!! (Cute girls do handiwork anime)
4-nin wa Sorezore Uso wo Tsuku (Secrets slice-of-life anime)
Urusei Yatsura (Boy and alien play tag anime)
Bocchi the Rock (Cute girls music anime)
Housing Complex C (Housing complex horror anime)
Raven of the Inner Palace (Something about a dark consort anime)
Akiba Maid War (Something about maids by PA Works anime)
Noumin Kanren no Skill bakka Agetetara Nazeka Tsuyoku Natta (Overpowered farmer anime)
Princess of the Bibliophile (Princess who likes books anime)

(This anime isn't actually done airing, but close enough. If the last two episodes wildly change my opinion I guess I can shift it around in the ranking like I plan to before finalizing earlier airing anime)

135. Parallel World Pharmacy
https://myanimelist.net/anime/49438/Isekai_Yakkyoku
Summer 2022 (12 episodes)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.59/10
Best Character: Eleonore Bonnefoi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1cmT5Lj0gc

Premise: After a genius medical researcher dies from overwork, he awakens in another world in the body of a young boy, Falma de Medicis. Now he hopes to use his knowledge to help people.

The Good: Parallel World Pharmacy is a fantasy isekai. That obviously isnt my favorite genre, and this does fall into some typical pitfalls which Ill cover below. However, I really like the focus on using modern medical knowledge to save people. This also did interesting things with the isekai concept which I dont normally see. People realize that Falma, after getting struck by lightning, isnt the same person he was before. Few realize hes been overwritten by a Japanese guy, but theyre still terrified at the implications. Since so many isekai have the whole world not care at all, it was nice to see a realistic take for at least a bit on how people would react.

The Bad: Like most isekai protagonists, Falma is super overpowered and great at everything. It wasnt enough that he has modern medical knowledge and a genius mind capable of perfectly recalling chemical chains. He also needs infinite magical power to create or destroy anything. And an eye that can magically diagnose and predict the results of treatment. And hes a noble with infinite money and power to do whatever he wants. In terms of being overpowered, this anime might be one of the worst Ive ever seen. I guess its good its all being put towards exploring something I find interesting.

Overall: Parallel World Pharmacy is a typical isekai in a lot of ways, so its lucky I inherently like its central concept. Using modern medical knowledge to help people is interesting, and it has a lot of potential since things like plagues were common in the past. Unlike most isekai, it also explores how people would react to someone they knew being taken over by an outside entity.

COMING UP TOMORROW:
134: This anime got eaten after its walls were breached.
133: This animes club will get disbanded if they lose their latest member.

(Of the last four anime in this tier, I haven't actually finished three of them, including both of the ones tomorrow. However, after those three, the only ones left that I don't intend to finish before reaching them are A Certain Magical Index S3 and the last two seasons of MHA, so these will be close to the last times I haven't finished an anime)

136. Ascendance of a Bookworm
https://myanimelist.net/anime/39468/Honzuki_no_Gekokujou__Shisho_ni_Naru_Tame_ni_wa_Shudan_wo_Erandeiraremasen
Fall 2019 (14 episodes), Spring 2020 (12 episodes), Spring 2022 (10 episodes) plus 2 OVAs
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 8.01/10 S1, 8.13/10 S2, 8.09/10 S3
Best Character: Myne

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QYUYuqwBEY

Premise: After a young Japanese woman dies, shes reborn in another world as Myne, a sickly child. As a book-lover in a world without easy access to books, she sets out to create her own.

The Good: Ascendance of a Bookworm is a fantasy isekai. It runs into various problems I have with that genre, as Ill cover below. However, it also explores a concept I find inherently interesting. Im sure many people have imagined what they would do if they went back in time. How could modern knowledge change a less advanced world? Myne is focused on books, but she still explores that thought experiment. It was fun watching her try different methods of creating paper, followed by monetizing inventions while navigating various business, religious, and political structures. Myne herself is also a fun character, so all that stuff was great.

The Bad: As interesting as I find the premise, Myne is still an overpowered isekai protagonist in that shes amazing at everything she tries. However, it was the later seasons where this mostly lost me. The setting has elements that make no sense, like the church needs a certain thing and a source of it is easily available and they just dont use it until Myne comes along. A lot of the people who stood against her were over-the-top evil caricatures. Once the religious plot became the focus and making books fell to the wayside, my interest in this anime dropped significantly.

Overall: I enjoyed Ascendance of a Bookworm a lot when the focus was on Myne using her modern knowledge to create things in a fantasy world. It was cute that she was so focused on books, and I was rooting for her. Eventually, though, the story shifts to a more generic fantasy plot involving politics and religion. It wasnt bad, but it wasnt as good as the beginning.

137. Goblin Slayer
https://myanimelist.net/anime/37349/Goblin_Slayer
Fall 2018 (12 episodes)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.42/10
Best Character: Goblin Slayer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0i0z98M2y5U

Premise: A young priestess is on her first quest when her party is overwhelmed by goblins. Thankfully, shes saved by the famous Goblin Slayer who seeks to eradicate the monsters.

The Good: Goblin Slayer is a fantasy anime about the titular characters single-minded devotion to annihilating goblins. I appreciate that Goblin Slayer, while powerful, isnt overpowered. Even against a stereotypically weak enemy, he understands the danger of getting overwhelmed by a horde or caught in an ambush. He relies on planning, cunning, and willpower just as much as his strength. It's fun watching him carve through weaker foes, but its equally fun to see him turn a losing situation around. I also like that there are different types of goblins, and the tactics they use keeps it from getting boring even though theyre pretty much the only enemy ever fought.

The Bad: There are things in Goblin Slayer that Id usually complain about. The first episode had some awful stuff happen to one of the female adventurers, and I remember it causing quite the stir when it first aired. Its given the horror and weight it deserves, however, and the goblins are literally savage monsters, so it didnt bug me as much. In the end, I cant find many flaws in Goblin Slayer. Much like the titular character, the story has a single-minded focus and does it well. I guess the grim tone of the setting and plot just didnt resonate with me enough to rank this any higher.

Overall: Goblin Slayer was an enjoyable anime. Despite his strength, there was always tension when the characters fought because the little green bastards were crafty and numerous. While they werent the best characters ever, I also liked the adventurers who often accompanied him. The overall tone was a bit too dark for me, but I still appreciated the varied battle scenes.

I'm a bit torn on Classroom of the Elite overall. I don't especially like the scene you mention at the end of season 1, but I think it's probably moreso because I don't see the rest of the show's writing as having enough strength to support the character arc the scene sets up. (A scene that's good in a vacuum which intends to create a tonal shift ends up feeling out of place if the rest of the show doesn't actually support that shift.) I'm led to believe this is an anime adaptation only problem, but who knows.
That's a fair concern. I have high hopes for the second season, but there's always the chance that it disappoints me. If they can pull off that promised character arc, though, I think it'll be great.

140. Claymore
https://myanimelist.net/anime/1818/Claymore
Spring 2007 (26 episodes)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.75/10
Best Character: Clare

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrHYEW1Raa4

Premise: Demons known as youma roam the world, and half-human beings known as Claymores hunt them down. Clare has been hunting one monster in particular for a very long time.

The Good: Claymore is an old-school fantasy battle anime. The setup is that Clare rescues a boy named Raki from a youma attack, and then he follows her on their adventures wandering from village to village slaying monsters. I like Clare as a character a lot. The story really delves into her history. I also remember Teresa being great, but really most of the Claymores were cool and had neat skills. The combat in this was often impressive too. Whenever there was a team fight, the characters would combine their abilities in neat ways and I always love seeing that.

The Bad: I really hated Raki. I kept waiting for him to contribute something meaningful to the plot and he never did, he stayed annoying and worthless throughout. Still, he was a relatively minor character all things considered. The story also ended in a rushed and unsatisfying way, but I still enjoyed Claymore up to that point so at least the ending didnt ruin anything.

Overall: Claymore is a solid battle anime. The badass girls use neat skills against monsters, and all of that is great. Raki the useless sidekick holds it back, as does an unsatisfying ending, but Claymore is still full of awesome moments and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I finally finished another recommendation! And the write-up for it is almost 700 words long because I had a lot to say.

BONUS. 86 Eighty-Six
https://myanimelist.net/anime/41457/86
Spring 2021 (11 episodes), Fall 2021 (11 episodes)
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 8.26/10 S1, 8.71/10 S2
Best Character: Vladilena Milize
Recommended by: @NBIceman

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZIMFWAxMxQ

Premise: An oppressed population known as Eighty-sixers are forced to fight a machine army called the Legion in defense of a country that doesnt even consider them human. Vladilena Milize, however, hopes to make a difference as the new handler of Spearhead Squadron.

The Good: 86 is a war anime with lots of battles between spider-like mechas. Im a big sci-fi fan, and the setting really appealed to me. The Legion, in particular, was awesome. I love the premise of an AI army going rogue, plus awesome little details like how they had superior numbers but (usually) predictable tactics, and how theyre expected to shut down in a few years, so humanity just needs to hold out. The later revelations about the Legion appealed to me too, they were an excellent enemy. As for the humans, Lena was my favorite (though Frederica from the second season is also great). Ill talk about the whole eighty-sixer/subhuman aspect below, but I still thought Lena had a good arc within it. For all her good intentions, she still had a long way to go towards unlearning her unconscious racism, which I found interesting. Spearhead Squadron was full of good characters too. I liked everyone and it did an excellent job at showing little moments between them, so it hurt whenever someone died. The combat in 86 was also excellent. It did a thing I always like in fiction where it sometimes showed events from different perspectives. The differences between how Spearhead saw things and how Lena saw it were always interesting.

The Bad: I wouldnt say it ruined 86, but I wasnt a fan of the racism. I understood the themes about how a country can so easily declare a whole group of people inhuman, how absurd it is that they can be so wilfully ignorant and evil by inaction, and how it all has roots in real-life genocides. I still didnt like it. Its a near-hopeless war against a horde of robots. By necessity, some people are going to be making the ultimate sacrifice on the front lines and others are going to be safer in the rear. That was the stuff I found most interesting, and I dont think the racism was needed to explore it. All it did was make everyone in the Republic an irredeemable monster (except for Lena). I watch fiction for entertainment, which isnt to say it all needs to be light and fluffy. 86 was plenty bleak and I enjoyed most of it. It just felt too over-the-top when Lena went into the HQ and everyone was laughing at her for caring about the sub-humans. Theyre locked in a desperate war against the Legion and most of them seemed to care more about exterminating undesirables than winning the war. In my opinion, it was an unnecessary distraction from the far more interesting plot of battling the Legion as a cast of characters I loved were whittled down.

Overall: 86 is my ideal mecha anime in a lot of ways. It had the Legion, one of the most interesting enemy forces Ive seen in a long time. It had compelling characters with Lena and the Spearhead Squadron. The battles were flashy and well-animated, and due to the enemy having superior numbers they always needed to be careful and strategic. All of that was great. A lot of time is dedicated to the Republics racism against the eighty-sixers, however, and I didnt like that at all. Im still not sure where my opinion on this anime will ultimately fall, I need to take some time to weigh the good and bad aspects. Still, I definitely know that I enjoyed it a lot. Itll for sure be somewhere in my top 100 anime, and Lena wouldve easily reached my top 100 characters. Thanks a lot for recommending it, NBIceman! Sorry for the super long write-up.

150. Kemono Friends
https://myanimelist.net/anime/33089/Kemono_Friends
Fall 2017 (12 episodes), Winter 2019 (1/12 episodes, unfinished)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.53/10 S1, 5.86/10 S2
Best Character: Kaban

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxg-AADx39w

Premise: Japari Park is home to many half-animal creatures called Friends. One of them, Serval, has just met someone named Kaban, and they go on an adventure to learn what species she is.

The Good: Kemono Friends looks like it should be terrible. Its an incredibly low-budget anime with weird CGI and parts of the story feel like its a kids show educating viewers about animals. All of that is true. However, theres a good reason why this became a surprise sensation when it was airing. All those lackluster elements come together to create something fascinating. My favorite part was the little hints at the setting that were sprinkled throughout, I mean it's set in a run-down seemingly abandoned nature park. Their main quest is discovering what species Kaban is, but I think most viewers will instantly realize shes human. That brings with it a new and far more interesting overarching question for the viewers what happened to the other humans?

The Bad: While the bad CGI and weird writing didnt ruin the show for me, they were still lackluster and didnt elevate it much either. I also wonder how much of the things I found most interesting was accidental due to the poor production, which detracted from the experience for me (though Im sure it wouldve elevated it for others). I know a lot of people found Kemono Friends charming, and I did too, but Id have still preferred something more competent that explored these same ideas.

Overall: Kemono Friends hooked me early on with a million questions about its setting. While I was watching intently for any information about where the humans went and what the deal was with this weird park, I also wound up becoming interested in the cute animal antics. Kaban and Serval were a fun pair to watch exploring this strangely fascinating world. I still havent watched the second season, but I remember there was a lot of drama around it when it was airing, and the low MAL score makes me wonder if its worth watching at all.

COMING UP TOMORROW:
149: This anime froze up and forgot its lines.
148: This anime has such little presence, no one will notice its elimination.
147: After it dies, this animes spirit will inhabit the body of a cute animal.

151. Cells at Work
https://myanimelist.net/anime/37141/Hataraku_Saibou
Summer 2018 (13 episodes), Winter 2021 (0/8 episodes, unfinished), plus 1 OVA
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.57/10
Best Character: AE3803

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFe3srrhLdI

Premise: The human body has 37 trillion cells, and this primarily follows the lives of Red Blood Cell AE3803 and White Blood Cell U-1146 as they deliver food and oxygen or battle viruses.

The Good: The concept of Cells at Work is still one of my favorite things ever. It turns the human body into a labyrinthine complex where trillions of people are all performing their little tasks while under constant assault from bacteria and viruses. Its just such a creative and fun way to think about something thats happening inside every one of us. This is an edutainment anime, and some episodes handle the education aspect better than others. My favorite parts were where it was symbolic (snow falling when the body is dangerously hypothermic, for example) without needing to pause everything for a voice-over to spell it out.

The Bad: I remember the first episode of Cells at Work feeling amazing. It was such a fresh idea handled in a fun way. Sadly, it turned out the first episode was the peak, and they couldnt maintain that level of excellence for long. Too often, this started focusing on the education half of edutainment. Stop the action to explain what a parasite is, stop the action again to explain the damage the parasite is doing, stop the action again to introduce the cell that defeats parasites just have the parasite melt something and have that cell stab it, I can put the rest together myself.

Overall: Cells at Work is still a fun anime, but it wound up being a lot worse than it shouldve been. Since the concept couldnt even hold me for one season, I still havent watched the second season (or the spinoff about a hard-drinking drug abusers body, though that one at least sounds different). Cells at Work was at its best when it was using the concept of a world where knockoff DBZ villains could burst through the walls at any moment, but it was boring when it focused on painstakingly educating the viewer on everything.

152. We Rent Tsukumogami
https://myanimelist.net/anime/36654/Tsukumogami_Kashimasu
Summer 2018 (12 episodes)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 6.69/10
Best Character: Okou

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWfVvAlBTQE
(Couldnt find OP or ED, linked to full OP song)

Premise: Seiji and Okou run a shop that rents items to people. Some of these objects, after many years of existence, have become tsukumogami and are inhabited by sentient spirits.

The Good: We Rent Tsukumogami is a surprisingly pleasant anime. The tsukumogami antics are fun in a Toy Story kind of way, and theyre all given a good amount of character. What I like most about this show, however, was the way it explored the relationships between people and objects. A comb can be an important part of the bond between a mother and daughter, for example. A lot of these are presented as mysteries, and the emotional payoffs were satisfying. I went into this anime with low expectations and was surprised how often it surpassed them.

The Bad: The production quality for this wasnt the greatest. The tsukumogami comedy could also get kind of lame at times. I dont want to rave about this anime too much, either. Most of the plots were satisfying but ultimately they were nothing special. It was just a nice anime to watch.

Overall: We Rent Tsukumogami isnt the greatest anime in the world, but it had elements that appealed to me. I liked the tsukumogami antics, I liked the low-stakes mysteries, and I liked the dynamic between the main characters. Im also a sucker for this kind of slice-of-life with a supernatural twist, which helped it overcome its poor production values.

153. Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou
https://myanimelist.net/anime/36817/Sunohara-sou_no_Kanrinin-san
Summer 2018 (12 episodes)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 6.80/10
Best Character: Sunohara Nana

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i51DB6ZKsVI

Premise: Shiina Aki, a boy who is often confused for a girl due to feminine features, moves to Tokyo hoping to change himself. There he lives in a house with four attractive women.

The Good: Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou is a fanservice harem anime. Im usually not a big fan of those, but this does a few things right. For one thing, Aki is an okay character and not a lump with no personality like in lots of harem anime. Secondly, quite a few of the girls have no actual interest in him. There are still scenes full of fanservice and innuendo with all the girls, but only one or two like him. That makes their scenes together cuter than if he was being chased by literally everyone. The fanservice in this is also surprisingly great. Nana, the fun gyaru with tan lines, is one of the hottest anime girls ever. Fanservice aside, this is a passable slice-of-life.

The Bad: No matter how many elements I praise, at its core this is still an anime about older women getting into sexually charged situations with a much younger boy. I think most people know right away whether thats something thatll ruin it for them or not. It might be hypocritical of me to say it didnt bother me. I mean, I bashed plenty of anime for uncomfortable age gaps in previous write-ups. Sunohara-sou is literally about that, though, so I give it more leeway. It also helps that, for all the fanservice and teasing moments, nothing ever goes too far.

Overall: Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou is one of the rare fanservice anime where I enjoyed the fanservice. Most of the time Im either neutral on it or annoyed if it gets really blatant. Nana was just so incredibly hot that, for once, I didnt want it to focus on something with more substance.

COMING UP TOMORROW:
152: This anime is inhabited by a sentient spirit.
151: This anime is riddled with viruses and bacteria.
150: This anime doesnt even know what species it is.

(The theme for today was fanservice (well, Yamada-kun was just a bunch of kisses but still) which I know some people are put off by, but we're past it now!)

154. Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs
https://myanimelist.net/anime/36726/Yuragi-sou_no_Yuuna-san
Summer 2018 (12 episodes)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.02/10
Best Character: Yunohana Yuuna

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrOkdBa3Q5w

Premise: Fuyuzora Kogarashi, having long been targeted by evil spirits, has learned how to exorcise them. When he meets a friendly ghost, Yunohana Yuuna, he decides to figure out a way for her to move on peacefully.

The Good: I like supernatural stories, and I really like stories about helping a ghost move on. While Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs wasnt the greatest example of that, it still had enough of those elements that I enjoyed it. However, this is mostly a comedic fanservice anime where Kogarashi lives with a harem of sexy ladies. My favorite running gag was Kogarashis past possessions by various ghosts. Any time he needed a niche skill, hed be like its a good thing I was possessed by the ghost of a master carpenter for three months as a kid! and thats why he knows carpentry. Made me laugh every time. He had a lot more character than the typical fanservice harem protagonist. Yuuna was still my favorite because she was a cute ghost, and the focus was on trying to fulfill her lifes regrets.

The Bad: As much as I like supernatural stories about helping ghosts move on, and as much as I liked some of the jokes, the fanservice aspect of this kept getting in the way. Like, it doesnt matter if a gag has a good setup if the ultimate payoff is Kogarashi accidentally groping one of the sexy ladies again. I dont hate fanservice, but in this it kept undercutting good gags or taking the tension out of what couldve otherwise been a neat situation.

Overall: Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs is a solid supernatural anime about trying to help a cute ghost finally move on. I liked most of the characters and the adventures they went on, but I wouldve liked them a lot more if the story stopped going out of its way to be sexy. The focus on fanservice became distracting and was a detriment to the anime overall.

155. Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches
https://myanimelist.net/anime/28677/Yamada-kun_to_7-nin_no_Majo
Spring 2015 (12 episodes)
My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.57/10
Best Character: Shiriashi Urara

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHncfQjJb_w

Premise: Yamada Ryuu is a delinquent at school. Then an accidental kiss with honors student Shiriashi Urara reveals that they have the ability to swap bodies!

The Good: I like the idea of Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches. There are seven girls in the school with different powers, and Im always a fan of supernatural stuff where different abilities need to be used smartly to solve problems. Like theres a witch who can make people fall in love with her, a telepathic witch, etc, and they all require a different approach. My favorite character was Shiriashi. In a show where her love interest is, by necessity, kissing a bunch of girls to awaken powers, she couldve easily been jealous and angry all the time. Instead, she was great.

The Bad: I know theres a good plot reason for most of them, but my goodness there are a lot of forced kisses in Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches. Id usually hate that a lot more, so I guess the plot necessity helped a bit. It was still uncomfortable. This adaptation also felt rushed with lots of characters getting minimal development and certain events happening way too fast. It still reached a solid ending, but there just werent enough episodes for the story it wanted to tell.

Overall: Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches had some aspects I really liked and some I kind of hated. Im a huge fan of weird abilities being used smartly in different combinations and situations. Im not a fan at all that he often had to forcibly kiss girls in order to get said abilities. I also enjoyed the relationship between Yamada and Shiriashi, but most other stuff felt rushed.

Time for some fun facts!

-The name 'Yuuki' or 'Yuki' is by far the most common name in my top 100 characters, appearing five times. If you count 'yuki' in part of a name, it bumps up to seven. The next closest are several names appearing twice.
-There are three voice actors who each voice five different top 100 characters. Seto Asami, voice of Kurokami no Onna, is one of them. Yuuki Aoi, voice of Konno Yuuki, voices three top 100 characters.
-The first anime where my score actually improves its MAL score is #100

I'm also bringing over these trivia questions before the first topic purges. Very few people made guesses but I still think they're fun. I'll still accept guesses for awhile, if anyone else wants to throw out a ratio or something.

1- The ratio of males and females in my top 100 characters (example, 51:49 would be 51 guys, 49 girls)
CURRENTLY: 0:2
Mac's guess: 25:75
Seabass's guess: 29:71
Koala's guess: 32:68

2- Only one anime has three characters in my top 100 characters
Mac's guess: Katana Maidens
Koala's guesses: Laid-Back Camp, A Place Further than the Universe, BanG Dream

3- Five lowest ranked anime with a character in my top 100
Death Parade (Kurokami no Onna)
Sword Art Online (Konno Yuuki)

4- Five highest ranked anime without a character in my top 100

160. Sword Art Online
https://myanimelist.net/anime/11757/Sword_Art_Online

My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.20/10 S1, 6.70/10 S2, 7.56/10 S3, 7.58/10 S4, 7.46/10 S5
Best Character: Konno Yuuki

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bqMDB10HNk

Premise: Thousands of players, including Kirigaya Kirito Kazuto, are trapped in Aincrad, a VR MMO. Beating the game is the only way to escape, but dying in it will also kill them in real life.

The Good: Sword Art Online is a polarizing anime. I have my problems with it, but I still like the premise. The players are trapped in a deadly game. They need to balance the risk of proceeding with the very real chance of death. Its interesting to see the society that forms in Aincrad under these conditions. I enjoyed SAOs first arc which isnt something I can say for all of them. GGO was at least fine, and Mothers Rosario was amazing (Ill cover that arc in my spoiler-filled Konno Yuuki write-up below). I still havent watched Alicization, so no idea how it turned out.

The Bad: The Fairy Dance arc is one of the worst things I have ever seen. While the other arcs vary from great to boring, Fairy Dance is terrible. Its filled with uncomfortable moments, ruins several old characters (Asuna in particular), and introduces new characters who suck. Suguha, for example, was a terrible addition. Kirito already has enough of a harem, he doesnt need his sister joining it! I do have one complaint about the original Aincrad arc, too. It had such an interesting setup and methodically progressed through it right up to point where it was like the story got bored with itself. Then it zoomed straight to a disappointing ending. I have no idea what they were in such a hurry to get to, the awful Fairy Dance arc came immediately after.

Overall: I wasnt watching anime when Sword Art Online originally aired, but I dont think Im wrong when I say that it changed the course of the entire medium. Now every season has a handful of video game isekai anime and half the main characters look and act like Kirito. Im generally not a fan of isekai, but I suppose it wouldnt be fair to blame SAO for animes slow descent into creative bankruptcy. SAO at least had a neat original idea, and for the most part it handled it well. The later arcs are hit-or-miss, but Id still say theyre worth watching if only to eventually reach Mothers Rosario and meet Konno Yuuki near the end of the second season.

CHARACTER: Konno Yuuki (Sword Art Online)
https://myanimelist.net/character/64523/Yuuki_Konno
Voiced by: Yuuki Aoi
TOP 100 RANK: 43rd

(No video, I couldnt find a good one featuring her that wasnt an English dub or crappy AMV)

SPOILERS FOR SWORD ART ONLINE

Im starting this character write-up with a brief tangent. Im rewatching lots of anime for this ranking. Some are ones I barely remembered, but most are old favorites so I can make sure they hold up. Sword Art Online didnt meet those criteria. I remembered both the good and the bad, and its nowhere near a favorite. Ill rewatch it someday before finally going into Alicization, but Im in no rush. However, I wanted to do a good job on this write-up, so I rewatched the seven episodes of Mothers Rosario. I knew what was coming, not that the story makes much effort to hide the inevitable end. Despite that, Konno Yuuki still made me cry.

Mothers Rosario is mostly Asunas story, and it redeemed her after Fairy Dance. Still, Yuuki is the catalyst for that growth. After two seasons of such high stakes, a character-focused arc was a welcome change of pace. Asuna learns of a powerful player dueling all challengers with their one-of-a-kind eleven-hit sword art, and she heads over to fight them herself. Yuuki, recognizing a kindred spirit during their duel, reveals that shes been looking for someone to help her guild, the Sleeping Knights, beat a floor boss and etch their names into the games history.

They succeed, of course, and Asuna hopes she can remain close with her new friends. Then the heartbreaking truth is revealed. The Sleeping Knights are all players who are hospitalized with terminal illnesses, and Yuukis condition is taking a rapid turn for the worse. Asuna refuses to back down and finds Yuuki in real life. Then, using a camera made by Kirito, she helps the dying girl experience as much as she can before the end. I loved their scenes together. Like everyone in the story, I cursed the uncaring universe for dooming Yuuki to die so young.

All of that is standard tearjerker stuff, however. Ill admit Im a sucker for that, but on its own it wouldnt elevate a character into my top fifty. What really makes Yuuki resonate with me is how her story compliments Asunas family subplot. Her mother is pushing her to quit gaming, catch up on her education, and basically to do something meaningful with her life. Yuukis influence gives Asuna the courage to convince her mother that money and power doesnt need to be what matters most in life. Its a nice little arc, and it beautifully ties right back into Yuukis story.

In the end, as shes dying, held by her dearest friend, Yuuki ponders the meaning of her life. Due to her illness, she always felt like she was born to die, doomed never to create anything or touch anyone in any meaningful way. A cynical person might argue she never did. Her influence never reached far beyond a mere video game. Personally, as someone who is on pace to write a hundred thousand words ranking anime for an audience of maybe two dozen people, something lots of people would call an absolute waste of time, Im a firm believer that anything can have meaning so long as it matters to you.

I think thats the conclusion Yuuki reached in her final moments. The legacy shes leaving in the game world, the experiences she had, and the friends she made, all of that was precious. All of it mattered. And Asuna will carry Yuukis influence with her for the rest of her life. Mothers Rosario was so beautiful, it almost made me forgive SAO for the Fairy Dance arc. Almost.

I hope no one minds that some write-ups might be way longer than the three hundred words I strive to limit them to. I finally wrote one for a top 100 character appearing in the anime I'm ranking 160th, and it's over six hundred words long. I'll probably have a lot to say about some of my favorite anime later in the ranking, too.

As always, thank you to anyone who is following along with this, even if you're only glancing at the titles or skimming through the write-ups! I'm enjoying having a place to ramble about my anime opinions. I'm also glad we've only just gotten through the lower tiers and the best is yet to come.

I forgot to update the recommendation tab in the spreadsheet, thanks for the reminder! (I had it in my own notes though so I wouldn't have forgotten it). I've updated the write-ups doc too now, so everything from the old topic is transferred.

@CoolCly I confirmed that Chivalry of a Failed Knight is available on HiDIVE, so let me know which recommendation you prefer between that and Rokka

165. Music Girls
https://myanimelist.net/anime/37481/Ongaku_Shoujo_TV
Summer 2018 (12 episodes)
My Score: 4/10, MAL Score: 5.99/10
Best Character: Yamadagi Hanako

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mp8z3HzCi0Q

Premise: Yamadagi Hanako is a natural at everything an idol needs except for one thing: she cant sing. She still begins living with a fledgling idol group to support them however she can.

The Good: Music Girls is a low-budget idol anime, and I probably shouldnt like it as much as I do. There are twelve major characters, so only a few of them get much characterization beyond a one-note gimmick. I enjoyed most of those gimmicks, though. Sasame and Roro were the best of the minor idols. Hanako was still my favorite character, she worked so hard to support everyone and bring out their best. Its neat to have the main character be support staff rather than an idol herself. I also enjoyed the idol shows they put on, even though they werent the highest quality.

The Bad: There were some small dramatic arcs between certain characters that I didnt like, but they didnt ruin the show or anything. What holds Music Girls back more than anything is that it didnt have the money or the skill to be anything more than a low-budget idol anime. I enjoyed it, but an idol anime needs to screw up hard for me not to enjoy it, so that isnt the highest praise.

Overall: I havent seen them all by any means, but I feel like most seasons have at least one generic idol anime and they all do mostly the same things aside from maybe a small twist in the premise. The twist in Music Girls is that Hanako cant sing so shes support staff, and thats it. Otherwise, its a typical idol anime. It was something nice to watch for a bit, but nothing special.

i have no inherent interest in watching high school girls, especially being sexualized, so the latest large swath (and... it seems like a large percentage of anime in general) have not been of note to me
Not wanting any high school girls in it at all definitely cuts out most anime, including many of my favorites! Not all of them, though, so thanks again for following the ranking. Hopefully at some point you'll hear of an anime that sounds neat enough to make it worthwhile.

Roba why have you not watched Perfect Blue
It's apparently on Shudder, on one of the Prime Video channels I don't have. My brother sometimes subscribes to it for a month around Halloween, however, so if he does again I'll try to remember to check this out.

The other topic might still last a few days. I just don't want to risk having to type up a new one at work on my phone, so I'm making this in advance. I've done my best to streamline the opening post a bit.

First Topic (until it purges, at which point past write-ups are in the doc linked above): https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80110659

SPOILER POLICY: The write-ups for anime will be kept as spoiler-free as possible. Part of this depends on your threshold for spoilers, though. If I complain that a one-season anime ends on a cliffhanger or that a romance doesn't progress much, some might consider those spoilers. I'll never spoil late twists or big scenes or anything like that, but I will mention specifics and give my overall feelings, so fair warning on that. Character write-ups, however, will be spoiler-filled. If I like someone well enough to talk about them, I want to be free to talk about their whole story. Character write-ups will have clear spoiler warnings. Obviously a character in a lighthearted comedy anime will have way less to spoil than one from a drama anime, but I'll still post spoiler warnings for all of them just to stay consistent.

TRIGGER WARNING (and not the anime studio Trigger either): Some write-ups mention sexual assault or rape. I tried drafts tastefully talking around those aspects, but it just felt odd. I don't know if anyone needs a warning like this, but I wanted to be respectful.

BONUS: Standalone Anime Movies (5 movies)
BONUS: Recommended Anime

The first topic finished my bottom 100, and quite a few beloved anime made a surprise exit in those lower tiers! Now, as we move into the 60 average anime and my top 100 beyond that, I'll do my best to justify why I like these more than the others that have already fallen.

TOP 100 CHARACTERS

Only one of my favorite anime characters appeared in the whole bottom 100, so I don't blame anyone if they've forgotten this is even part of the ranking. They're about to get a whole lot more common, though! As a reminder, I'll post write-ups for characters at the same time as their anime, so that ranking will get filled in haphazardly as shows fall.

RECOMMENDATIONS

I'm still seeking recommendations! I haven't made anywhere near as much progress in these as I'd planned to, real life stuff kept getting in the way. This ranking will last until the end of November, however, so I still have three months to watch as much as I possibly can. At worst, I'll continue watching them after the ranking ends until I've finished everything.

Each user can recommend one anime for me to watch, do a write-up for, and eventually add to the ranking, with the following restrictions:

-The anime must be available on one of the following streaming services (Crunchyroll, HiDIVE, Netflix, Prime Video, or Funimation). I'm not morally against pirating, I just don't really know how to do it and I don't have a VPN and I dunno, this is just easiest.
-The anime must be a complete experience on its own. What I mean by this is, no individual arcs from the Pokemon anime and nothing like Kingsglaive that's meant mostly as a prequel to Final Fantasy XV. I'm going to watch the anime you recommend and nothing else, so I don't want it to be one small part of some way bigger thing.
-All seasons of the anime combined must be a reasonable length, preferably fifty episodes or less. Sorry to anyone who wanted to make me watch all of One Piece. I don't have that kind of time. If you're afraid something might be too long, feel free to ask! 50 episodes is a suggestion, not a hard cap. Just don't feel too bad if I don't want to commit to anything huge.
-Up to four users can pool their recommendations for one longer anime, with a hard cap of 200 episodes max. I honestly don't think enough people are following this for it to matter much, but it came up in the first topic and I thought it'd be fun to at least make it an option.

The spreadsheet (with tabs sorted alphabetically and by season) as well as my MyAnimeList account, linked at the top of the post, should help you find something I haven't seen. You don't need to try and pick the anime I'll enjoy most, just choose something that you truly love! I'm doing this as a fun thing for the ranking, and to find new anime I might've never seen on my own.

-----

The last thing I want to mention might seem obvious, but I still want to get it out there. This ranking is 100% my own personal opinions. I've ranted about several that I know are some people's favorites. I'm sure my favorites are on a few people's most hated lists too! I'm not ranking anime on their intrinsic quality, if such a thing even exists. I'm ranking them based purely on how much I enjoyed them, which can be a nebulous and unfair thing. It's okay if we disagree, and I'd love nothing more than to have discussions about it. I just hope we can do it without dismissing each other's opinions too harshly. Playful mockery is a lot more fun.

the Macross series got fucked over super hard by Harmony Gold
Huh, that's interesting. I've definitely heard of Robotech before (I swear I played some low-budget video game from it way back in the day), I never knew it had such an odd history of being a combination of anime.

Seems these are the first two idol shows on the list, as well.
Yep, this is where the generic idol anime fall. Unless they do something to make me angry (Heroines Run the Show), it's hard to screw up fun character antics and the occasional song. Even these idol anime are fine, there's no shame in a high 4/10 from me.
