14. Beat a JRPG
Pokemon Sun

I also decided to merge the Trilby games into one just for fairness sake. I haven't beaten the last one yet but I don't want to do a bunch of edits so I've already merged the Chzo Mythos into one under challenge 10.

Pokemon Sun (3DS)

It was certainly fun but this is probably my least favorite Pokemon game. I don't even know why, I was trying to figure it out the entire time I was playing it, but something just felt off. I never played X/Y, I wonder if they're better. I guess I'll try them someday

Trilby's Notes (PC)

It was spooky, sure, but I had to follow a guide the whole way through. How did people ever play these 'type an exact command or nothing will happen' puzzle games and why did Yahtzee think it was a good idea to bring that back?

I refuse to accept any blame for you choosing the wrong LiS moment! I limited myself to four like you said and that meant choosing the canonically correct top four

The overall nightmare in Life is Strange probably wouldn't make my top ten moments from that game alone, but the video you linked also included the hall of memories at the end and that one part of it was amazing. One of my favorite sequences in the game, even! It wouldn't have been possible without the rest of the nightmare as foundation, so... I guess that means it was okay. Still hoping a few other LiS moments make the list ahead of it, though!

Liking the write-ups so far!

I'm pretty sure the "real world" doesn't have a digital graveyard of all the people who were absorbed into the transistor (you can compare them to the files describing all of them in the function pages). It also doesn't have like 5 Transistors in the background.

I thought the graves were holding the people hooked up to the simulation, like in The Matrix.

I don't remember that battle being too hard. Maybe I managed to cheese it the first time through, I dunno. It was a neat moment to be sure, though!

the Transistor to stop it draws the people in its vicinity -- both Red and him -- into a kind of purgatory.

...This is what happened? Man, I did not understand Transistor at all I guess. I thought that was them getting kicked out of the simulation and waking up in the real world

28. Beat a game with the supernatural as a central theme
7 Days a Skeptic

These are way shorter than I remember them being so in the end I might wind up combining them into a single game, but for now I'll use them individually. I'm planning to try for two lists again this year, after all!

That's interesting, it's one of my favorite PS3 games. Why didn't you like it?

I whined about this enough in my 2016 game ranking topic as I was playing it, but what it boiled down to was that it honestly didn't feel like Valkyria Chronicles was truly a strategy RPG. There were a few missions that felt like actual battles, but mostly it was a matter of figuring out a broken method that would trivialize everything. In one mission I ignored the whole level and took the target out with snipers. In another where units randomly spawned in halfway through I just restarted, positioned my guys where I knew enemies would appear, and then won in a single turn once they did. Even the fun missions usually ended with a scout charging forward alone. That isn't strategy, that's a badly designed puzzle game.

EDIT: And I just realized I previously praised Lost Dimension for having a unique solution to a mission's problem when I teleported my dude through a door, but there was exactly one short mission where that was possible and it wasn't an intended solution to the level. In Valkyria Chronicles, I save-scummed like crazy, killed one enemy unit for every action, frequently charged a scout forward and took the base way before I should've realistically been able to reach it... then got a B rank. I don't know why but they clearly balanced this game around the BS tactics.

No joke, I didn't remember that moment from MGS3. Been too long since I played it, I guess!

I can agree about the first Big Daddy fight, though. Those were always intense, I don't know why I always made a point of aggravating them even when I no longer needed any more ADAM

I played this with my brother back in the day but he was the one controlling it then. This time it was just me, and man I hadn't realized this was such an old-style puzzle/adventure game. It's still a neat concept and story but it was hard to control and most of the puzzles were so obtuse

Lost Dimension (Vita)

Hmm... I could work my way through all the enemies in the level to get to a switch like the developers intended. Or I could use the dude with teleportation powers to skip through a door, teleport the rest of my team in, and kill the level's target before the enemies have so much as had a turn.

I love it when games have the potential creative strategies like that. This game was great

Hey Arti, back when I got my Vita I made a topic asking for recommendations and asked if anyone had played Lost Dimension. Someone had and they said it was good. Was that you? You're one of the few people who I know owns a Vita on this board

Anyway, if that was you I just want to say you were right, Lost Dimension is really good so far >_>

I beat the main quest and the civil war quest lines, anyway. Those were the only ones I'd never done before, too! In the past I did every other major questline and then I'd run around clearing random caves until I got bored but this time I made it my mission to actually 'beat' the game.

It felt kind of needless to me. I'll occasionally reorder the tally so that whoever is highest is in first anyway, no need for a 1st next to their name. Still, this would be easy to add in if people want it

Happy New Year, and welcome!

Credit goes to tazzyboyishere for first starting this in 2016. Basically, there are 50 challenges outlined below that will require you to beat 52 games total. This isn't a competition and there's no prize for winning aside from a sense of accomplishment. This is just a fun thing to participate in while we all work through our video game libraries. It also gives us a place to discuss what we're playing. Feel free to join in!

Rules:
- A game can only be used for one challenge
- Use your own judgment to decide if game fits in a certain category
- Games started in 2016 or earlier are fine as long as they're finished in 2017
- Please add your own games to the spreadsheet linked to below, which anyone can edit
- When using the spreadsheet, please don't mess with checklists/tallies that aren't yours
- There's a tab listing favorite games in the spreadsheet if you need help with challenge 43
- If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
