I watched 10 Cloverfield Lane before watching the original. The movie was great on its own and if you pay attention the alien invasion stuff makes sense and is established with what we hear of the outside world

Yup, I would have been disappointed if it did just end with her escaping Howard because the movie setup the last minutes so well.

Although I admittedly didnt pay attention through tour a lot of the movie so maybe ill Have to rewatch it if I get really bored...but I think Id have to be pretty damn bored. It just felt like your typical B rate sci-fi movie with very few actual connections to cloverfield. Im also not a fan of one of the major plot points so I really cant imagine myself enjoying it even on a second watch where I pay attention.

As I said, 10 Cloverfield Lane also had little connections to the Cloverfield universe until the end, but the main story was great anyways, and the whole movie was setup in a way that made it seem like the aliens weren't just tacked on. It felt like it was complete.

See, that's the thing. The movie itself is fine. It isn't anything special, but it can satisfy you if you want something to kill time with. There were some nice parts to it. It is the fact that they made it a Cloverfield movie, which makes me feel ripped off, and ultimately sours my experience.

SPOILERS:

- The main movie has nothing to do with Cloverfield monsters/aliens. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if the movie was as strong as 10 Cloverfield Lane, which also did not focus on the aliens/monsters until the final 10-15 minutes (although I personally feel 10 Cloverfield Lane, an already great movie, was made even better because of the monsters/aliens).

- While the main story was featured in space, occasionally there would be shots on Earth. The husband of the protagonist is driving through the ruined city, and there is even a silhouette of a monster in the smoke at one point for a brief few seconds.

- Literally, to justify the Cloverfield name, they threw a monster in the last few seconds, and I literally do mean seconds. The crew goes back down to Earth after they complete their mission, unaware of what happened to Earth. After their capsule falls through the clouds, a giant monster pops out and roars, and you see its face for a couple seconds, and then you get the credits.

Seriously, you can tell they took a movie script that was just a typical sci-fi parallel universe story, and then added in the scenes with the husband and the monster at the end to justify calling it Cloverfield. 10 Cloverfield Lane actually did a great job making sure that every small detail in the movie was there for a reason, which is why the aliens actually made sense in that movie if you paid attention.


Basically, don't watch it, not necessarily terrible, but the movie is scam for Cloverfield fans, and doesn't deserve the reward of having your viewership for misleading people.
